    Košice December 8, 1970

Our dear little Pista (Stevie), little Babi, and your beloved children, we waited for your letter a very long time. We were faced with many unpleasant predicaments when we changed apartments. We sold ours and we paid for the other one. The lady took the money and gave it to her son. He then bought a motorcycle and the lady then refused to leave her home. Finally with much difficulty she finally left. We were able to move in on November 24th. The place is really nice, it has two rooms, but is rather neglected and in dire need of repair. We are working day and night to get it into order. Uncle Gyula is helping us. Soon we will forget what a big annoyance this all was for two months straight. In the tall ground floor, there are 9 stairs that lead to the apartment. In the other apartment as you have seen, there were 45 stairs that we had to go up to reach our apartment. Uncle Gyula was not at all able to make it up the stairs. In no time I would no longer be able to make it the trek up the stairs either. What’s the most important is that we are almost done with the repairs to the apartment. My hands cannot take much more because we had to repaint everything. It should all be done by the time Christmas arrives. Little Pista, you are a great person, along with Beverley. We cannot forget you guys.

    II.

If only we could meet up again and see you guys while we are still alive, we would be able to face death a lot easier. Would that be possible? When I escorted you when you were leaving I walked back and I was crying the whole way, I was just so sad without you, I felt heartbroken. You were here for such a short amount of time, it would have been better if you would have been able to stay longer. Those couple days were not enough. Pista and Babi, write to us and tell us how the get-together with little Maris, your mother, uncle Bellus Gyula, aunt Ilon, Robert Kamank [unsure about spelling of Robert’s last name, partially illegible] and everyone. I am crying so much right now just thinking about it that I can barely see what I am writing. I would have liked to be there for the get-together. I know that your kids were very happy little Terez Deni [could be Danny spelled with Hungarian letters] and everyone, Richie too. Write and tell us if you found a relative in Nemesbük Hungary. How did you like Budapest? Sweet Pista and Babi, you can write to us in English if you want because Gyuszi Jr. is taking English lessons from the lady who teaches Peter English. They can translate it for us, since it is probably difficult for you to write in Hungarian.

    III.
Our dear little Pista, little Babi, and your dear sweet mother Maris [short for Maria] send their Christmas wishes to their beloved children and all the relatives who live in America. May their holidays be blessed. Likewise from the bottom of our hearts we wish that the New Year will find you in the best of health.

If we receive a response to this letter, we will promptly write back. We feel great in our new place. I could even catch a bird, I am so happy here. We are so thankful to God for it. This is our new address:
    Julius Kolesar

Uncle Gyula will write uncle Bellus Gyula a long letter. Gyuszi’s family will also send their Christmas wishes in a letter. The two boys also talk a lot about little Luci’s mother and everyone talks about you all. On Christmas celebration or Christmas Eve we will talk a lot about you. Please think about us too.

    Our dear Uncle Pista (Steve),
We really liked the photographs and Christmas wishes you sent us. On the occasion of the upcoming Easter, we wish you and your big family much happiness for the upcoming Eastertime. Unfortunately we have many problems we are dealing with. Gyorfi Janos Sr. (July 11, 1901)* has been sick for a while. His son Gyorfi Janos Jr. (November 1, 1951)* is a soldier and my mother Nagy Anna (November 10, 1921)* is the only one able to work. In the next letter we will send family pictures. If you get a chance to come to Hungary, please come visit us. It would be nice to see you again.
In closing, we send many kisses to your whole family.
    With love,
Gyorfi family, Gyorfi Sr., Gyorfi Jr., Nagy Anna

Our dear little Pista (Steve), little Beverly, and your beloved family,
We received your letter and photographs. All of you look nice and beautiful. First things first, we wish the newlywed couples Dani and his wife and little Terez and her husband happy married lives together. May God bless them aIl. And that through the big and long sea of life their ship will never ever crash into a reef, but rather they should be loving and understanding toward each other. From the bottom of our heart we wish the new couples the elder and younger Kolesar family and Jucika’s parents and the Dudas family in/on the photographs I kissed all of you all over, and I just cried so much, because I would have liked to see all of you on the wedding day, but of course this was not possible. Sweet little Pista and little Beverly, the death of your mother left deep wounds in us. You loved her so much. But now that aunt Ilon wrote us and said that her husband uncle Gyula died, we all felt as if the world was collapsing around us. Who will write us such a love-filled letter now? Little Pista, you will take over for him, right? May the Lord God give your mother, our sweet little Maris and (her) brother-in-law Bellus Gyula eternal tranquility and may the earth be easy. Peace and Blessings be upon their ashes. Poor aunt Ilon, I really feel sorry for her, because it is such an ordeal when someone loses their life companion. Unfortunately, that’s the way life goes, eventually we all must die. We hope that you will send pictures of uncle Gyula’s funeral. In January and February I, uncle Gyula, and Gyuszi’s family got sick. There was some kind of fever epidemic here. Uncle Gyula is 82 years old and I am 70. Both of us got really weak, we aren’t that strong anymore. Dear little Pista and little Beverly, we know that it is big thing to come to Europe, you just had two weddings, your mother’s funeral, uncle Gyula’s funeral, this all

…simply costs a lot of money to travel back and forth, but if the wounds heal, then you will return to life and we too hope that still in this life we will see each other. We send our many warm regards and kisses to sweet little Beverly’s parents, those beautiful people. Now I must ask you about in Toledo, how is Mrs. Kerekes Mihaly doing, whose maiden name is Lucza Borbala? Anyways, we wish you a Nice and Happy Easter and we wish good health to you all. Make sure to translate our good wishes to all of the relatives you come in contact with who live in America. I will write to aunt Ilon. The weather started warming up here, you are lucky that it is always warm there. Dear little Pista and Beverley, not a day passes that we don’t mention you (think about you). Our Peter has studied English for about 6 months now. Gyuszi understood and translated your letter for us, so feel free to write in English. But who will translate this long letter that I wrote for you? Please tell us who. Gyuszi and the others (family members) does not like to write. I chew them out for it, but they tell me that I should write instead of them because I am better at it. Gyuszi, Juci, Peter, and the little Gyuszi send their love to Beverly and everyone. Peter will be 14 years old on the 31st of March. They are already so tall, just like their father. We are so glad that the Vietnam War is over finally.

    Many kisses and love, farewell,
Family of Koleszar Sr. and Koleszar Jr.

Dear Pista (Steve) and beloved family,
May the good Lord bless your whole family with the best of health. I am getting along, but it is very hard for me without my dear old husband. I always just cry, even though I know it will not bring him back. Dear Pista, the church received the money you sent. On behalf of the church, we thank you very much. It is a blessing from God that even those who are far away are able to give to the House of God. The Lord blesses those who give with a happy heart. The tower/steeple is already complete, but on the plastering on the exterior will be completed next year. That will be a new expenditure, along with the wiring of an electrical system for the bell. No one is willing to ring it by hand anymore. In closing together with the blessings of the good Lord, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Yours faithfully, *widowed Senior B. Nagy Istvánné (Mrs. Stephen B. Nagy Sr.)**
    Nemesbikk Borsod County
I do not write so well, my hand has become weak and cumbersome.

    * The four letters in the original document are not clear. They appear to be, “ö id B”. In this context ö is probably özvegy, which means widow; id is probably idős, which means Senior; and B is probably an initial for part of name.
** In Hungary women who take their husband’s name, to include their first name, and they add the suffix né to the end of his first name, to indicate that it is his spouse. They typically use this name on all official documents.

Dear Pista (Steve) Beverlyke (little Beverly) and your whole family, and all of the relatives who live in America. To all of you we wish from deep in our hearts a God blessed Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. And most importantly, we wish you good health. Our dear little Pista and little Beverly, how are you doing? Have you gotten ill? I wrote to you and Bellus Ilonka during Eastertime, and I did not receive a response from anyone. I am quite worried that one of our relatives has a problem. We are not doing so well ourselves. *Uncle Julius (Gyula bácsi) is already over 83 years old and recently he has been feeling ill, he is so weak. This Autumn was so difficult with a lot of cold rain, which is certainly quite harmful for the elderly. I am already 71 years old and my hands tremble a lot. As time passes, we become very weak. Gyuszi (nickname for Gyula) and his family will be doing fine, slowly but surely. Junior, little Gyuszi, had to get an operation for appendicitis . They are already taller than their father, they are just growing so fast. Peter finished 9th grade. He just started his Freshman year in High School, he has to study a lot, 3 languages: Slovakian, Hungarian, German and they attend a seperate English class. So, how are your kids doing? Write to us about them. You can write to us in English if you want. We can’t imagine why you wouldn’t write to us. It is already cold here, it is snowing and things are frozen over. Geez, I have said this already many times, *uncle Bellus Gyula passed away. Well, we do not have anyone to write to anymore. *Aunt Ilon can write in hungarian, why doesn’t she write? We know it is hard for her to forget *Uncle Gyula, but a long period of time helps you forget everything.

    * The words bácsi and néni literally mean uncle and aunt. Hungarians use those words when talking about or to any older man or woman, so it is not clear whether or not these people are literally their aunts and uncles, or just elderly friends/family members.
[In all the letters the names Gyuszi are found, that is a nickname for Gyula]

Our dear little Pista (Steve) and little Beverly, I will now close my letter and wait for your response. Gyuszi’s family sends their regards and kisses with much love to each one of you. How is little Terez doing? Dome [not legible, could be Dani, or something else] Jozsi and everyone? Lindi? [not legible, could be some other name]
How is Barbara Kerekes in Toledo? And little Bellus Boris? Olasz [not legible] Erzsi (Nickname for Elizabeth)? Does she still live in Florida?
Fare thee well, and the Koleszar family too
    Lots of love,

[many Hungarians use suffixes –ke/ka that means little, and is used as a term of endearment. Almost all the names found in these letters have included the “little” suffix. Older women tend to refer to their younger relatives in this way]
