California. His father's will shows him in Chariton County, MO.
"HISTORY OF HOWARD AND CHARITON COUNTIES", pg 958: cooper. Mr Hawkins
belongs to a Kentucky branch of the family whose name he bears, one of the
oldest families in Virginia. His grandfather, Elijah Hawkins, became a pioneer
settler in Kentucky prior to the beginning of the present century, and there
his son James, who had come out with his parents from Virginia, was married to
Miss Nancy White (Tomblin?), of the Blue Grass State. Harrison Hawkins was the
third of a family of seven children resulting from this union, and was born in
Madison county, Kentucky, February 28th, 1813.
When he was eleven years of age (1824) his parents removed to Missouri,
making the journey on the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, to the town of
Old Franklin, in Howard county, by keelboat, and were on the two months and
seven days. They settled in Boone county where Harrison grew to manhood.
The son developed a spirit of enterprise as great as that of his pioneer
ancestors. The Florida war offered an opportunity for him to gratify this
dispostion. In 1836 he joined the army operating in the wilds of the Flowery
Peninsula and did gallant service for his country in that struggle. Returning
then to Missouri, he was employed in the pursuits of peace until the Mexican
War broke out, when he again shouldered his musket to battle for the old flag.
He was under the command of Sterling Price, afterwards the noble old pater
patroe of Missouri, but at that time "a youth to fortune and fame unknown." He
spent about a year and a half in the land of the cactus and greaser, until the
starry banner floated in triumph over the ancient capital of the Montezumas.
Aside from military service Mr Hawkins was engaged in farming up to 1844, but
after this he turned his attention to coopering which he has since followed.
Away back in 1835, on the 7th of June, he was married to Miss Dephus
Tipton, originally of Madison county, Kentucky, but of a pioneer family of this
State, for whom the town of Tipton was named. Though it is nearly fifty years
since they were married, the grave has not come between, and in the twilight of
old age they still continue the journey of life together, looking forward with
pleasure to the day, not far distant, when they will celebrate their golden
wedding. They have four children living, all now the parents of families:
Amanda, now Mrs J A Applegate; Mary E, the wife of Lewis M Applegate; Alice Z,
now Mrs M H Holcomb, and Fannie L, the wife of Mr C B Shaefer. Four are in the
repose of the grave: James, Laura, Odea and an infant. Mr Hawkins, the
venerable old veteran, and his good wife are members of the Baptist Church.
