Page 1067 - Callaham's Lick. This is another of the early landmarks of this section. It is situated on the farm of Joel Hawkins (son of James), which is the northwest quarter of Section 13, TWP 49, Range 14. The salt springs, some 15-20 in number, are on the east side of Callaham Creek, which takes its name from William Callaham, who pitched his tent near those springs several years in advance of the earliest settlers of this portion of Boone Co.
"HISTORY OF HOWARD AND CHARITON COUNTIES", pg 958, shows that James had seven children, Harrison being #3. 1830 census shows 1 male 15-20, 1840 census shows 1 female 5-10 but no male at home 25-30.
In same article, said "he was from the Kentucky branch of one of the oldest families in Virginia. His grandfather (Jame's father) Elijah Hawkins became a pioneer settler in KY prior to the beginning of the present century, and there his son James, who had come with this parents from Virginia, was married to Miss Nancy White (Tomblin?) of the Blue Grass State. In 1824 James moved to Missouri, making the journey on the Ohio, Mississippi and MO Rivers, to the town of Old Franklin, in Howard Co, by keelboat and were 2 months and 7 days on boat. Settled in Boone Co where Harrison grew to manhood.
