One Sunday, on returning from church, they discovered their home and possessions had "burned to the ground". They rented another house about a mile out of Bosworth and lived there a short time before they sold the farm and bought a house in Bosworth. Jess found work in a store there. Later they bought a store in Tina and moved there.
Jess chewed tobacco as most men did then, but he kept the fact unknown to Ann for several years by chewing behind the barn and rinsing his mouth after. (the validity of that story cannot be guaranteed, but that was what was reported in our search)
