Great Grandpa Grow
1942-1960 , Idaho
I always called him Great Grandpa Grow. I remember as a small child visiting him in Nampa, Idaho and every Grow Family reunion he danced the jig until he was very old. He came to live with his daughter Rosella(my grandmother) when I was in my teens and he had what we now know as Altzheimers, and would wander away sometimes looking for his hat. We kids would search the neighborhood until he was found. He was a grand old man, very humble and mild, and he passed away at his daughter, Rosella's home in Twin Falls in August 1960 just after my graduation from high school. I remember seeing him in his casket. He had pure silver white hair and was dressed all in white a beautiful sight to see.
My memories of Grandpa Grow by Betty Jo
Gandpa Grow added this on 3 May 2009 I remembr him as a dancer. After my Grandmother Rosella died he would hitchhike where ever he could find a Church dance. When I was thirteen he visited us in Lewiston, Idaho and he was my first dance partner. I was thrilled. He had a tremendously handsome dark black widows peak until his hair turned white, quite late in life. He was a farmer and always wore bibbed overalls except on Sunday. "During this decade the butcher shop was located on the NE side of East Birch Creek on Main Street, which the city maps call "Willow." The butcher shop was operated by Fred Bailey..had an ice-house in back with double walls filled with sawdust. Ice was cut in winter and stored there during summer months. One of his employees was Charlie Kidwell, an emigrant from MO who later married Nora Michaels. Bailey sold the shop to Frank Michaels. Then later Elvin Pollock purchased it."
Pg 308: "...Albert Frank Michael came to Umatilla Co in fall of 1883. ...turned to railroad construction and kept moving west until he arrived in Oregon. Later his son-in-law Elvin Pollock joined him in the business. This shop faced Main Street next to East Birch Creek on the spot where the present post office stands (1880s)."
Pg 312: "Mr and Mrs Elvin Pollock lived on Little McKay Creek... He md one of the daus of Frank Michael. They had a family: Albert, Maurice, and Thelma (Green). They sold their place to Elmer Wyatt and moved to PR where Mr Pollock worked in the butcher shop owned by his father-in-law, Mr Frank Michael."

MARRIAGE: Thomas Wesley Thurlo md late in life, Virginia ......

HISTORY: "Descendants of John and Abigail Thurlo:"Lived on home place with brother David until he was 59, then married a young woman and lived happily on the home place until he died. In addition to farming all his life, Tom raised some fine horses, as did several of the Thurlos of his generation. Being somewhat mischevious and daring, he was known to have "race his pacers down the streets of Boswroth", sometimes terrorizing those who happened to be in the street ahead. He was a hard worker and well like by his friends and neighbors."

HIST: Descendants of John & Abigail Thurlo, pg 5-5: "... the couple lived in a tenant house on the farm until after the death of his parents when he moved into the main house, which he later owned.
In reality, Paul was an eccentric (possibly a bit reclusive), as he preferred to continue the old ways of living rather than take advantage of progress. He spurned the "new-fangled" electical stuff and continued to live without refrigeration or other appliances available at that time. He did conceed to having a telphone though.
Paul was a jovial man and seemed to enjoy "his" way of life (his wife Mary seemed to cope). He refused to wear dress clothes. His idea of dress clothes was a pair of bib overalls and a suit coat, even on his 50th Wedding Anniversary. He wouldn't let anyone take pictures of him. He, like most of the Thurlos of the time, enjoyed growing a good garden and loved flowers. They left no heirs. Both buried Wharton Cemetery, Carroll Co, MO."

"Grandma Smith wrote to Aunt Lou, that was her sister-in-law and Virginia's mother -- Leona said she wasn't a bit good, so probably not alive. One of their girls, maybe Aurelia that is in Wash. DC was educated and I think Blanche Shaffer in LA was better off than the rest -- don't know if either of these could tell you anything. The man who had the Browning paper was Joe Nichols....this Tempie that I wrote to at Carson, WA was Uncle Dan's -- didn't know very much. They've all moved to different parts of the country and just remember hearing their parents talk."
