18251 | Times-Herald (Vallejo, CA) - Friday, November 2, 2012 Deceased Name: Mary Allen Hardison CA United States Sept. 1, 1910 - Oct. 28, 2012 Mary Allen Hardison returned to her Heavenly Father at age 102 on Sunday Oct. 28. A lifelong member of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter day Saints, she had lived a purposely simple life of family, faith and service. She lived by the motto "you are only as old as you wish to be", which she proved when setting a World Record as the oldest female to go tandem paragliding on her 101st birthday. She was born in Mesa, Arizona, Sept. 1, 1910, the seventh of 12 children, to John Seymour and Barbara Phelps Allen, and was preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings. She married Waldo Collins Hardison in 1936 and they were blessed with two sons. The small family moved to Vallejo in 1942, when Waldo, because of his experience with copper tubing, was requested to come to work at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. She was preceded in death by her husband (1979) and one grandson, Michael (1959). She is survived by her two sons, Waldo Allen Hardison (Bonnie Baker) and Marion Walker Hardison (Andrea Nesbit); 12 living grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great- grandchildren. Mary graduated from Arizona State Teacher's College in Flagstaff Arizona in 1932 and took her first teaching position that same year at the Keams Canyon Navajo Indian Center. Her teaching career continued 39 years, teaching in Mesa and Cherry, Arizona before moving to Vallejo. She worked for almost 30 years as a teacher in the Vallejo School District retiring in 1971. She was presented with an honorary life membership in the California Congress of Parents and Teacher, Inc., the highest honor that can be given to an individual for outstanding service to children and youth by the PTA. She served in her church in many positions, but her 19 years serving the youth gave her the greatest joy. Besides being a loving mother, grandmother, great and great great grandmother and a dear friend, she will be remembered best for her years of service. She was taught to make quilts at an early age and began to do so in earnest after retiring from teaching in 1971. She made and gave away over 1200 quilts with 31 of the ones she made this year going to an orphanage in Africa. What wasn't given to charity was given to someone to let them know that they were loved. It was special to be given a Mary Hardison quilt, as they became known. A family memorial service was held In Bountiful, Utah and another will be held in Mesa, Arizona, when she is laid to rest alongside her husband in early November. | Allen, Mary (I593)

The McKendree Cemetery is located off the side road leading to Seldom Seen and north to Jack Mtn. and Doe Hill approximately midway between Doe Hill and McDowell. James Harvey was married three times and had a total of fourteen children. When he and Jannie Wilson were married they lived on the Cowpasture in Highland County and later moved to what was known as Keisters Hollow, near McKendree Methodistrch, midway between McDowell and Doe Hill, Virginia. They had ten children. After Jannie's death Harvey married Phoebe Jane 'Feebie' Ralston, a widow, and had three more children before Feebie died due to complications in childbirth, in 1925. Havey then married Jessie Simmons--there were no children born to this union. After his death in 1931, the three children by his second wife, Feebie, were placed in foster homes. My parents, Dice S. and Nina Armstrong raised Lynn Stover. Lynn worked for my dad for many years before striking out on his own in the loggusiness. He was like a father to me, and I love him very much. Although the children were separated at an early age, they were very close and kept in contact with each other. His descendants are now scattered throughout the United States. JHA 2001. From the files of Janice L. Parents: Bur: James Harvey Armstrong was the fifth child born to Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong. Not much is known about his early life. We know he was a very hard worker and it has been said he could pitch a haystack faster thane in the neighboring area. He enjoyed riding horses and hunting. He always kept several "coon" dogs. James, "Jim" Harvey Armstrong of McDowell, Virginia, grandson of Harvey, has a dog horn which belonged to his grandfather. Jim sheared over 100 sheep for a local farmer in exchange for the horn. The horn is dated. It is priceless and the only known article remaining from the James Harvey Armstrong estate. It's very fitting that a grandson who bears his name has this horn in his possession. Harvey was married three times and had a total of fourteen children. When he and Jannie Wilson were married they lived on the Cowpasture in Highland County and later moved to what was known as Kesters Hollow, near McKendree Church, Doe Hill, Virginia. Harvey and Jannie had ten children. There is some Wilson Family history at the end of this report on James Harvey Armstrong. After Jannie's death, Harvey married Febbie or Phoebe J. Ralson, (her name has been found both ways). They had three children. She died in 1925 due to complications in childbirth with their fourth child, an unnamed son. Harvey then married Jesse Simmons. There were no children of this union and after his death in 1931, the three children by his second marriage were placed in foster homes. The older children, by his first wife, were at this time out on their own. Although the children were separated at an early age, they were still close and stayed in touch with each other. They returned to Highland County when they could, usually staying with Nora, whose door was always open or stopping in Churchville with Florence. Barbara Woods, daughter of Florence, gave a report on her grandfather, James Harvey Armstrong and his descendants at the 1988 Reunion and introduced many of the family members. The descendants of James Harvey Armstrong are scattered through out the United States. At this time (1992) four of Harvey's children are still living in Virginia, 2 from his first marriage and 2 from his second. They remember their father as an honest hard working man, but have only vague memories of their mother. They are proud of their heritage and the qualities of compassion, kindness, helpfulness, and even the stubbornness that has been instilled in them as Armstrongs. PART OF NEWS CLIPPING - DOE HILL Mr. J. Harvey Armstrong passed to his reward on March 4, 1931, at the age of 62 years and 15 days. He was sick just a few days, death resulting from pneumonia and complications. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow and 11 children....l services were conducted Friday at ll a.m. from McKendree church, Rev. L.M. Moffett officiating.....Six of his nephews acted as pall bearers: burial was in the cemetery near by. A very large crowd of people attended the funeral: lots of them relatives as he leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins; he was well liked and will be missed a great deal in his community. He was always ready and willing to do something for others; he was a man people could put a lot of confidence in, for when he said he would do something, it was always done and done right. ********** CHILDREN OF JAMES HARVEY & JANNIE E. 18291 | Uncle Luther moved to Detroit as a young adult. He worked for Hudson Motor Co. After World War II he operated a service station in Detroit. Later, he bought a cottage on Big Wolf Lake, near Lewiston, Michigan and lived there until his death. He and Aunt Pauline visited us in Tucson, Arizona in the early 60's-where I was practicing dentistry. I was moaning about Social Security-he told me to look on the bright side-they were enjoying that Social Security money that I was paying in!!! I was trying to interest him in my church-he told me he would just keep his membership in the Round Church--I asked "Which was that"? He replied-The one where the devil can't corner you!! To my knowledge- he hasn't been cornered yet!! JHA 3/2001 A Tribute to Uncle Luke at his death------- Luther left home at the age of 16. His first job was a 'horse tender' in a logging camp. The horses were much more valuable than the men in the camps. After leaving there he traveled out to Kansas and worked in the wheat fields. He settled in Detroit in the early 20's and here he lived, worked, and raised his family until he retired and moved to Lewisston, Michigan, in 1944. Luther owned and operated a Service Station most of the time that he llived in Detroit. He dsell out' and work in the defense plant during World War II. After moving to Lewiston he worked some as a carpenter. He was an excellent craftsman. He did a lot of remodeling of homes all of his life. Dennis can remember moving quite often when they lived in Detroit, this being part of their incom Luther had the ability to make use of everything and never threw anything away. His motto probably was" a penny saved is a penny earned". Luther stayed close in heart to his kin folks. Every summer when the boys were at home they made the trip by car back to Virginia. There were no expressways and a lot of dirt roads, but, they would leave early in the morning from Detroi k in the valley where he grew up to sleep that night. He brought his boys up to be close to their kin-folks. Luther and Pauliine travelled some in their later years, to California, Florida, and always back to Virginia. Luther was a strong man. He loved to eat, and he was lucky to have Pauline, who was an excellent cook , for a wife. His kidneys were his downfall!! They were injured in 1967 before his prostrate operation. He had very little illlness in his life and believed in 'doctoring' himself. Luther died at a young age of 70. He went to the hospital a strong healthy man and died one week later of kidney failure. He loved nature and his humble way of living kept him close to it. To my Father-in-Law with love, Dorothy King Armstrong From the files of Janice L.
