- To see photo of J. Harvey, 'Jannie' and some of the older children look for photo under Elizabeth Jane 'Jannie' Wilson.JHA 1/25/2003. The McKendree Cemetery is located off the side road leading to Seldom Seen and north to Jack Mtn. and Doe Hill approximately midway between Doe Hill and McDowell.
James Harvey was married three times and had a total of fourteen children. When he and Jannie Wilson were married they lived on the Cowpasture in Highland County and later moved to what was known as Keisters Hollow, near McKendree Methodistrch, midway between McDowell and Doe Hill, Virginia. They had ten children. After Jannie's death Harvey married Phoebe Jane 'Feebie' Ralston, a widow, and had three more children before Feebie died due to complications in childbirth, in 1925. Havey then married Jessie Simmons--there were no children born to this union.
After his death in 1931, the three children by his second wife, Feebie, were placed in foster homes. My parents, Dice S. and Nina Armstrong raised Lynn Stover. Lynn worked for my dad for many years before striking out on his own in the loggusiness. He was like a father to me, and I love him very much. Although the children were separated at an early age, they were very close and kept in contact with each other. His descendants are now scattered throughout the United States. JHA 2001.

Bur: James Harvey Armstrong was the fifth child born to Eli and Elizabeth Ann (Bodkin) Armstrong. Not much is known about his early life. We know he was a very hard worker and it has been said he could pitch a haystack faster thane in the neighboring area. He enjoyed riding horses and hunting. He always kept several "coon" dogs. James, "Jim" Harvey Armstrong of McDowell, Virginia, grandson of Harvey, has a dog horn which belonged to his grandfather. Jim sheared over 100 sheep for a local farmer in exchange for the horn. The horn is dated. It is priceless and the only known article remaining from the James Harvey Armstrong estate. It's very fitting that a grandson who bears his name has this horn in his possession. Harvey was married three times and had a total of fourteen children. When he and Jannie Wilson were married they lived on the Cowpasture in Highland County and later moved to what was known as Kesters Hollow, near McKendree Church, Doe Hill, Virginia. Harvey and Jannie had ten children. There is some Wilson Family history at the end of this report on James Harvey Armstrong. After Jannie's death, Harvey married Febbie or Phoebe J. Ralson, (her name has been found both ways). They had three children. She died in 1925 due to complications in childbirth with their fourth child, an unnamed son. Harvey then married Jesse Simmons. There were no children of this union and after his death in 1931, the three children by his second marriage were placed in foster homes. The older children, by his first wife, were at this time out on their own. Although the children were separated at an early age, they were still close and stayed in touch with each other. They returned to Highland County when they could, usually staying with Nora, whose door was always open or stopping in Churchville with Florence. Barbara Woods, daughter of Florence, gave a report on her grandfather, James Harvey Armstrong and his descendants at the 1988 Reunion and introduced many of the family members. The descendants of James Harvey Armstrong are scattered through out the United States. At this time (1992) four of Harvey's children are still living in Virginia, 2 from his first marriage and 2 from his second. They remember their father as an honest hard working man, but have only vague memories of their mother. They are proud of their heritage and the qualities of compassion, kindness, helpfulness, and even the stubbornness that has been instilled in them as Armstrongs.
PART OF NEWS CLIPPING -
DOE HILL
Mr. J. Harvey Armstrong passed to his reward on March 4, 1931, at the age of 62 years and 15 days. He was sick just a few days, death resulting from pneumonia and complications. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow and 11 children....l services were conducted Friday at ll a.m. from McKendree church, Rev. L.M. Moffett officiating.....Six of his nephews acted as pall bearers: burial was in the cemetery near by. A very large crowd of people attended the funeral: lots of them relatives as he leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins; he was well liked and will be missed a great deal in his community. He was always ready and willing to do something for others; he was a man people could put a lot of confidence in, for when he said he would do something, it was always done and done right.
