1913 Newspaper Article for Edward and May Meaken

1 July 1913, Newark Evening Star

May Meaken, only 13/14 years old, appeared in court against her father, Edward Meaken. Mrs. Edward Meaken died one year ago, leaving 4 children (ages 2 to 13). They lived on 373 Ogden Street. Edward started to drink, leaving the children neglected. May took care of the children, eventually having to give up school.

John A Cullen, of the Catholic Children's Aid Society, had an investigation made of the family. In court, Edward sobbed, "I am guilty. My only regret is that I never sent the kids to school."

Edward Meaken was sentenced to 1 year in the penitentiary. Meaken's 4 children were placed in John A Cullen's care.
