17 March 1883, The Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati, Ohio
The Rev Thomas Berg was suffering from blood poisoning. His wife had just given birth and died from blood poisoning. Thomas Berg had a cut on his hand and contracted the disease. The nurse also contracted the disease from a cut on her finger and became very ill.
The nurse, Mrs. Leichterkost, was from Hoboken. She was sent home and admitted to a nearby hospital. After several days she recovered. Mrs. Leichterkost "has the reputation of being a first-rate nurse." She has been a midwife for many years and has considerable experience with blood poisoning.
