It is the family tradition that John's father Joseph was a physician and surgeon in the French and Indian Wars. Joseph's father William was a worshipper in the Old South Church. Boston, where his children were christened by Rev. Peter Thacher, he was one of the founders of Barrington and Nottingham N.H, but sold all his holding there in 1724-5.
