1899 HISTORY: History of Cole, Moniteau, Morgan, Benton, Miller, Maries, and Osage Counties, Missouri by Goodspeed Publishing Company (1899): Cole County Biographies, a MOGenWeb Project - Fred H. Binder: Fred H Binder, president of the Jefferson City Water Works Company, architect and builder, was born in the Province of Hanover, Germany, October 14, 1845, his parents being J. H. and Johanna (Meyer) Binder, who were of the same Province. The father was an architect and builder, and civil engineer, his special business being the building of houses and water-mills. He and wife died in their native land, leaving four children: Carl, Fred H., Charlotte and Anna. Fred H Binder was reared and educated in Germany and at an early day was apprenticed to the architect and builder's trade, and thoroughly learned the intricacies of the business.
In 1866 he determined t seek his fortune in America, and took passage at Bremen, and landed at New York City, on the 8th of November, 1866. He came directly to Missouri and located for a short time in Franklin County, and in the spring of 1867 came to Jefferson City, and began working at his trade. By perseverance and close study he soon became proficient in command of the English language, and at the same time gained the confidence and esteem of the people. In 1878 he was elected a member of the Board of Education, and served five years as secretary of the same. In 1881 he was elected a member of the city council, and in 1884 was chosen mayor of the city with no opposition. In the summer of 1884 he was appointed by the Secretary of the United States Treasury as superintendent of the construction of the United States Court House and Post Office, and held this position until the completion of these buildings in 1888.
He constucted the State Reform School building at Boonville, which is considered to be one of the best and cheapest buildings erected by the State. He also erected the Catholic Church and most of the good buildings in Jefferson City. Upon the organization of the Jefferson City Water Works Company, he was elected the president, and managed the construction of the same; it is one of the finest and best built in the State, and completed under his super-vision.
As an architect and builder he has few equals and he deserves much credit for his enterprise and public spirit. He is Past Grand in the IOOF, is president of the Board of Trade, and has been president of the first Jefferson City Building and Loan Association ever since its organization.
In 1868 he was married to Miss Kate Blockberger, a native of Jefferson City, by whom he has two children: Clara, wife of Prof. Zeisberg, musical instructor, and Fred C. He and wife are members of the Evangelical CFhurch.
c1900 HISTORY: MO,Cole Co-Jefferson City [from Illustrated Sketchbook & Directory of Jefferson City & Cole County, pg 431]: "The accompanying cut [picture] shows a front view of the Binder Building, 212 East High street, the property of Mr Fred. H Binder, a retired contractor and capitalist, the President of the Jefferson City Water Works Company, the Jefferson City Bridge and Transit Company, and the owner of a large amount of valuable property in the Capital City, included in which is the Music Hall, in which is his private office and that of the Water Works Company. Mr Binder also owns a handsome park in the western suburbs of the city. Before retiring, he built, under contract, a nu8mber of the most modern and imposing public buildings in the State outside of St Louis, among them the magnificent new structures which took the place of the Missouri State University buildings destroyed by fire. He superintended the erection of the U.S. Government building of this city, which is conceded to be the most perfect piece of architecture in the state. (See skethch, page 328.)"
Pg 328: "F H Binder - Frederick H Binder is a native of Hanover, Germany, where he was educated & grew to manhood. He fitted himself for the profession of architecture and building. When 20yrs old he came to the US, with the intention to learn the ways and methods of the new world, & returned to Germany after 5yrs sojourn. It was in 1867 that he came to Jefferson City, & since that time has resided here. He commenced life here as a journeyman carpenter, but it was not long before he was foreman for his employer & soon thereafter entered upon a career as architect & builder. The new State University building, Columbia; State Reform School, Boonville; School, Chapel & additions to the State Deaf & Dumb & Lunatic Asylums, Fulton, Mo; State Industrial School for Girls, Chillicothe, Mo; St Peter's & Evangelical Central churches & with few exceptions, all the prominent business & residence buildings erected from 1873-1892, in Jefferson City, are results of his labor. The US Court House & Post Office bldg, costing $150,000, was erected under his supervision as Superintendent of Construction of the US Treasury Dept. Mr Binder has many architectural monuments to his credit. He is Pres. of the Jefferson City Water Works Co., & the system, one of the best of its kind, was constructed under his supervision. He was the largest subscriber to the bridge enterprise, & one of the first to recognize the importance of building the bridge & was untiring in his efforts to bring about the consumation of that great enterprise. He was its first, ad is now Pre. & Mgr of the Bridge & Transit Co. For the past 25yrs he has been on of our leading men, for there is not movement looking to the advancement & up-building of Jefferson City in which he cannot be found at the front.
Time & again Mr. Binder has been honored by his fellow citizens. He was elected Mayor in 1884, without opposition, served in the City Council, & from 1878-83, was Sec & member of the City Board of Education. He was one of the original founders of the first Jefferson City Bldg & Loan Assn, organized in Jefferson City. He was its first President, and is still holding that position. He is broad & liberal in his views & a man of the strictest integrity.
Mr Binder resides in a modest, comforable home on Dunklin street, where, in his moments of leisure, he can gratify his taste for literature. He was married in 1868, to Katherine Blochberger of Jefferson City, who is still his devoted & congenial companion. He has 1 child, Fred C Binder, who is associated with his father in his various enterprises & is Superintendent & Tresurer of the Water Works Co.
Fred Binder, jr., is married & with his charming wife (formerly Miss Alma, daughter of W W Wagner, of Jefferson City), resides at 109 West High street."
