Edward D. "Eddie" Hays, 89, died December 19, 2007, at his home in Hutchinson, Ks.
He was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Lyons, Ks., an only child of Charles Edward Hays and Bessie Leah Maxwell Hays. On June 5, 1940, he married Esther Anna Smith. She survives.
He was a longtime resident of Hutchinson, having moved from Lyons, Ks., with his parents in 1929. He worked at Fleming Wilson Wholesale Co. beginning in 1932, and then at Cessna Aircraft before enlisting in the WW II U.S. Air Force in 1942. He served his country proudly in England, European Theater and in South America. Upon his return to the U.S., he and his wife lived in Sarcoxie, MO., for three years before returning to Hutchinson, where he was associated with George Sutton in the building of residents and other general construction in and around Hutchinson before working for a time at Farmers Coop Grain Elevator Co. He later worked for Bob Ging Builder, a Real Estate Developer, for 15 years before retiring in 1980. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Other survivors include: Daughter, Sherry L. Barnhart and husband Ron, Granddaughter, Rhonda Kretzer and Family, Gary, Faith & Jaden. Grandson, Scott Barnhart and Family, Shari, Kylee & Kenneth, all of Hutchinson. A Son, Stephen Edward Hays and wife Robbie and Family, Travis Edward and Katlin, all of Hutchinson.
Nieces, Marlene Harkness and Family, Shawnee, KS. Elanor McCoy and Family of Hutchinson. Nephew, Fred McCaskey and Family, Tallahassee, FL. Extended family, Sandy Waters, Pat Hetrick & Tammy, Bruce, Matthew Edward and Molly Ann Matney, all of Branson, Mo.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 22nd, at Elliott Chapel. Friends may sign the register from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Military honors will be conducted by the McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard.
