"Hallmarks 1994" shows Dean bn, then killed in WW II-Jimmy Dolittle Raid on Tokyo, Japan... executed by Japanese. NOTES: Texas 1962: Ollie's boy Dean killed in WWII in Jimmy Do Little Raid in airplane. Fell into ocean when came down. "In 30 Seconds over Tokyo" movie honored Dean-heard them say "here comes Hallmark" before he was killed. An article 1993 in Smithsonian magazine "Tokyo Bombed! Doolittle Do'od It" by James A Cox pg 128, said that 3 men were executed by firing squad--Lieut. Wm Farrow, Lt Dean Hallmark & Sgt H Spatz. Info sent from Doyle Hallmark after runion went to in TX: The Doolittle Raid, 18 April 1942: Led by legendary flier Jimmy Doolittle, 16 US Army B-25 bombers broke through Japanese defenses on April 18, 1942 to strike Tokyo and other cities in broad daylight. The daring and dramatic raid stunned Japan, revived American morale, and signaled a new course for the Pacific War. (Dean is the son of Ollie Hallmark, grandson of Great Uncle Ed. Ollie's is daddy's 1st cousin). Hallmark brought the plane down in the stormy sea; the impact tore off a wing. Hallmark smashed through the windshield. After 4 hrs in high waves, Hallmark, copilot Robert Meder, & navigator Chase Nielsen made it to shore-cut, bleeding, & exhausted. Bombardier Wm Dieter & flight engineer/gunner Donald Fitzmaurice were both seriously injured in the crash; their bodies later washed ashore. Local Chinese fishermen tried to hide the survivors. But 3 days later Japanese soldiers captured all 3 men. Their ordeal was just beginning. The epilogue to the Tokyo raid was bitter. The Japanese held Barr, DeShazer, Farrow, Hallmark, Hite, Meder, Nielsen & Spatz. They would make them pay, man by man. The captors moved the survivors of "The Green Hornet" & "Bat Out of Hell" to Tokyo. There, handcuffed & leg-cuffed, the fliers were placed in the hands of Kempei Tai, the Japanese Army's military police, who knew how to make a man wonder whether life was worth living." Letter from Jimmy to parents (not delivered until after war): "Dear Mother & Dad...I went on a bombing mission because I was told to and because I am an Army pilot. I knew there would be some danger, but it was war... I never dreamed of this outcome... They have just told me I am liable for execution. I can hardly believe it... Mother, you try to stand up under this, and pray. And Dad, you do the same. And Sister, too. I don't know how to end this letter except by sending you all my love. "On Oct 15 1942, a black limousine entered the First Cemetery grounds outside of Shanghai. Farrow, Hallmark, & Spatz were brought out. Prison guards marched the men to 3 small wooden crosses situated 20 ft apart. The 3 Americans were made to kneel with their backs against the crosses. Guards removed the handcuffs & tied the prisoners' wrists to the cross-pieces. They wrapped the upper portions of the men's faces with white cloth, marking black "X's" just above the noses. A 6-man firing squad took positions 26 ft in front of the Americans. At the count, they pulled the triggers. There was no need to fire a second time." The coffins were taken to the Japanese Residents Association Crematorium, where the bodies were cremated. The askes were placed in small boxes & put on an altar at Kiangwan Prison. About a month later the boxes were removed & taken to the International Funeral Home in Shanghai where they remained until the end of the war. However, the names on the boxes were deliberately changed by unknown persons in an attempt to conceal the real identities. Fortunately, the record of the real & fictional names was found after the war, and the ashes were returned to the States for internment in Arlington Cemetery. Newspapers article from The Fredricksburg Standard, Wed., Sep 2 1992: "Doolittle Raider Presents POW Medal for Nimitz Display - article: A former Doolittle Raider from WWII presented a piece of history to the Admiral Nimitz Museum St Hist. Park August 21. Col. James (Herb) Macia, USAF, ret., presented the POW medal of Lt Dean Hallmark, pilot of one of the Doolittle crews, who was captured by the Japanese & executed. On hand for the ceremony marking the loan of the medal to the Nimitz were members of Hallmark's family -- Doyle Hallmark of Dallas & Laverne Newland of San Antonio. Hallmark was the pilot of crew 6, The Green Hornet, of the Doolittle Raiders, who staged a surprise attack on Japan early in WWII. Hallmark's plane ran out of fuel & was ditched off the coast of China. In 1988 the medals were awarded to the Doolittle Raiders, by Congress & among those were 4 posthumous medals. Macia took responsibility for finding the next of kin for those 4 men. The medal Macia presented to the Nimitz will be on display for approx 4 months & then returned to the family...
