His educational opportunities were naturalyy limited, being confined to the old subscription schools of the neighborhood..."

Descendants of John and Abigail Thurlo, pg 3-1: "...In 1852, accompanied by several others, he was engaged to drive cattle from Milan to Sacramento, CA. He spent some time in the gold fields, teaming, mining and pursuing various other occupations. He reportedly purchased a yoke of cattle for $300 on credit and sold them for $700. This was his first business venture, and apparently others were successful as his savings steadily increased until 1855 when he returned home on the same mule on which he had left, and purchased a portion of the land presently held by his descendants..."

c1869 HISTORY: Descendants... pg 3-1: the house he built in 1855 (2-room log cabin) was remodeled, expanded, added to and taken from over the years but still stands on the Alson Thurlo homeplace in tribute to the man who loved it so much. Remodeling told about in "History of Sullivan Co, Duncan Twp, pg 107 - added another half story also".

Clum, who married Lee Peterson a school teacher and daughter of Prof. Peterson... Hinda, who married William Rush. 1 child who died as an infant. Hinda bought property in Browning after death of husband. Called Aunt Hilda. 3. Hank md Parmelia Johnson, lived on Thurlo farm. Son R A md Genevieve Bunbridge: Eugene died young-heart attack. Ricky md Rose Dudley, son: Lane Allen. Jane. Judy (twin) md Clifford May. Story of Eugene...."

He was one of many interesting characters in the early history of Sullivan Co and won enviable reputation thru his honesty and upright dealing, was honored and respected by community. He owned large herd of cattle and bred and sold race horses, also had a number of jacks and jennets around the farm...
