Jos Gansel first attended German school, then English, following farming dur summer til 22yrs. Md at 22, learned trade of shoemaker, relinquished to be postmaster of Beaver Valley. Later elected constable until engaged in mfg of shoes at Foundryville PA, also clerking at store while res there. Elected assessor of Briarcrk Twp served as JP for 5yrs. 1851 moved to Dushore, Sull Co PA where engaged in gen merchant 9yrs or til elected sheriff of co 1860 when he located at Laporte. Served 3yrs 3mos, bought tract of land in Laporte which he cleared & supplied with new bldgs. Followed farming successfully sev yrs, disposed of farm to Mr Phillip,present owner, elected assoc judge. Served highly satisfactory one term 3mos, moved to Muncy Valley, accepted position as supt bark peeling bus with DT Stevens & Son Tannery. 4yrs later built Pennington Hotel (temperance house), conducted it with excellent judgment until 1894, est good rep as landlord. Also owned stage line from Muncy Valley to Eagle's Merc. using 4-5 teams daily during summer to convey passengers. Also hauled provisions and bld materials with 10-14 teams bef railroad system between these 2 points. Erected his present home on one of vacant lots, practically retired. Well known throughout county.

"Hon Jos Gansel, who came to reside in Davidson (Twp) in 1881, had for 32 yrs been one of the most prominent citizens of the co. Bn Mifflin Twp, Col. Co in 1818, his ancestors came frm GY, but his fthr Gideon Gansel, was bn in US. His mthr (maiden name Catherine Fisher)resided all her life in Col. Co. Joseph went to live at Foundryville, Col Co nr Berwick, there became intimately assoc. with SF Headley.
Mr Headley at this time having estab a store at Headleyville, in Sull Co, & was otherwise interest in Dushore prop., induced Mr Gansel to go to Cherry Twp & take chg of his store. He had previously md a dau of John Auman. Sep 1851, he removed his family to Sull Co. Aft conducting mercantile bus. for short time for Mr Headley, he was introduced, in connection with Col. James Degan, to purchase Headley Store. The partnership cont'd 17 mos, when he sold int to partner & engaged in the employ of Wells & Wilcox, who were then largely engaged in mercantile business in Dushore. Subsequently a chg made at Wells & Ackley, Mr Gansel continuing with them abt 6yrs.
He had become one of most popular men residing in Dushore. His health failing from too much close confinement to store, he was persuaded by friends to accept nomination of the Free Soil Party for ofc of Sheriff - he was elected. In 1860 he removed fam to LaPort. In 1871 he rec'd nom by Rep party for office of Associate Judge - he was elected - held office 5 yrs. Remained on farm until 1881, employed by Stevens & Son - to take chg of bark furnishing business connected with their extensive tannery. He moved to Muncy Valley, continuing this very laborious employment 3-4yrs, then retired. Aft Williamsport & No Branch RR built thru Davidson Twp, he engaged in variuos capacities in forwarding interest of the road. In all the business relations, he proved himself an honored & respected citizen.
In his early yrs, united with Methodist Episcopal Church - interests of Church have always been dear to him. His svcs always in demand as an office bearer. He filled position of class leader over 40yrs & was leading man in obtaining funds & erection of 3 church edifices, viz: Dushore 1853, Laporte 1872, Muncy Valley shortly aft moving there.
Although now in 74th yr, he is still active, possessing full vigor of mind & reasonable degree of physical strength.

Nov 1999 e-mail from Craig Gansell: My great grandfather, Will or Bill as he was known. He was known to be as good a ventriloquist as George was mathematician. He also had a good rapport with his dogs as did my grandfather, Louis. (I guess my grandmother used to chide him with "you're just like old Bill Gansell, half dog!") Anyway, old Bill apparently wasn't nearly as good at math as George, because in 1888 he claimed to be 27, getting married to my 16 yr old great grandmother, Mary Meracle, and 9 years later in 1897 he said he was 37 when he married 18 year old Effie Swisher.

"ALBERT F. MICHAEL --The career of our subject presents one round of industry and activity that bespeak an energy & wisdom far above the ordinary, & places him among the leading business men in this part of the west; coupled with this he has a reputation for uprightness that his every day life demonstrates is fully merited has been instrumental in placing him in the center of the large circle of admiring friends.
He first saw the light in the Keystone state (PA), Columbia Co on Feb 8, 1854, where his father, Andrew Michael, was an operator of canal boats on two of the principal canals of the state. He remained with his father until 1877, acquiring a good education and such a practical training as afterward made him the successful man that he has been.
In 1880 he came to Mitchell Co KS, bought a farm of 160 acres, where he lived for 2 yrs, then selling out went to Norton Co, the same state, & took up a homestead, staying upon it for 2 yrs. During that time he was occupied with contract work on the grade of B & M RR in Nebraska, & later was superintendant of construction on the UP in KS. In the winter of 1882 he went to Nebraska, & took contract work on the Missouri Pacific, & the next year found him operating on the Oregon Short Line in Idaho.
In the fall of 1883 he first came to Umatilla Co as operator on construction of the OR & NRR, & the spring following in Portland & was solicited to take full charge of the grading of the Northern Pacific to Kalama. After this was successfully accomplished he went to WA & pursued his vocation on the NP in that state. After this he came to Pendleton, put in a switch from the main line of OR & N to Byers' Mill.
April 1 of 1885, he moved to Pilot Rock, & engaged in farming & stock raising, where he was very successful. It was 1891 that he bought the place where he now resides, 227 acres. In addition to this, he owns half a section adjacent to Pilot Rock, which is all first class wheat land is all under cultivation.
On Feb 11, 1875, he was married to Miss Mary E Reynolds, whose father was a gen.merchant in Sullivan Co PA, where their marriage occurred. 1862-1962 HIST: "In The Footsteps of the Pioneers, 1862-1962," by Will M Kidwell, Ed.D., Pg 242: "During this decade the butcher shop was located on the NE side of East Birch Creek on Main Street, chich the city maps call "Willow." The butcher shop was operated by Fred Bailey..had an ice-house in back with double walls filled with sawdust. Ice was cut in winter and stored there during summer months. One of his employees was Charlie Kidwell, an emigrant from MO who later married Nora Michaels. Bailey sold the shop to Frank Michaels. Then later Elvin Pollock purchased it."
Pg 308: "Mr and Mrs Albert Frank Michael came to Umatilla Co in fall of 1883. He was a construction operator for OR & NR RR, but it was not until 1885 that they moved to Pilot Rock and entered into farming and livestock raising. In 1891 he bought 227 acres on Little McKay Creek where they settled, and the younger members of the family were born on this place. He expanded the ranch to a total of 860 acres. In addition to this, he owned a half section of land adjacent to Pilot Rock.
He was born in 1854 in Berwick PA. He received a good eduction in this community. In 1880 he came west to Kansas and farmed, but he finally turned to railroad construction and kept moving west until he arrived in Oregon.
He md Miss Mary E Reynolds of PA in 1875. They reared a family consisting of: Lilli May, Ellery, Ella, Eva, Charles, Sadie, Bessie, Frank, John, Roy, Nora, Josephine and Iva. Later his son-in-law Elvin Pollock joined him in the business. This shop faced Main Street next to East Birch Creek on the spot where the present post office stands (1980s)."
Pg 361: "Shipp homestead on lower McKay Creek-Frank Michael, who ran the butcher shop in Pilot Rock, bought the Shipp place...sold it to son Charlie, who sold out... 1948."

Funeral services for Mrs Sarah Ellen (ZT) Sperry, almost 90 years, be today (Thurs,22 May) from United Brethren Church in Edmond 2 p.m. Mrs Sperry died suddenly in her home 5pm Tues am.

Mrs Sperry bn 31 May 1857 Berwick PA. Came to KS as young woman, res in Mitchell & Clay Co for short time bef coming to this section-res for 69 yrs. Mr & Mrs Sperry lived in northern Graham Co until 1919 when moved into Edmond. Mr Sperry died there in 1919.
Mrs Sperry was mother of 8 children, 2 of whom preceded her in death-1 son,1 dau. Surviving: Edna & Earl-KC, Harry & Alva of Edmond, Roy of Caldwell ID, Frank of Stockon KS.

Her parents were Andrew and Rebecca Michael. She moved with her parents to a farm near LaPorte PA when she was 12 yrs old. On Feb 11, 1875, she was united in marriage to Zachary Taylor Sperry, of LaPorte. To this union was born eight children. Her husband predeceased her on Jan 15 1926; also two children: Edith and Ralph, both of whom died in infancy. Surviving children are: Frank W Ssperry-Stockton KS; Aalvia E and Harrison C Sperry of Edmond; Roy A Sperry of Caldwell ID; Edna R and Myron Earl Sperry of Kansas City MO.
In 1920 Atha Markham Sperry, the wife of Alvia Sperry, died and Mrs. Sperry performed a mother's part in rearing his three children, Lawrence E, now of Witchita Kas.; Ivan E, Colorado Springs; and Mrs Erma Belden of Edmond. There are eight other grandchildren and nine great grandchildren."
