1895 DEATH,BURIAL: Newspaper Bob has - MR GEORGE WAGNER, A PIONEER CITIZEN, DIED LAST NIGHT
At 7:50 o'clock last night Mr George Wagner, one of the pioneer settlers of this country, died at his home on West Ashley Street. Mr Wagner was 73 yrs of age, and has always been an active and healthy man, until the last few months his helath had been very poor and was ended by his death last night.
Mr. Wagner and family are probably better knownthan any other family in this section of the state, and all who knew the old gentleman can testify to his friendship for all.
He was born at Schwarzach, near the village of Kulmbach, Bavaria, Feb 13, 1821, and with his father and mother immigrated to the United States in 1840 and resided in Baltimore, MD, then Kentucky and Ohio, and settled in this county in 1844. His mother died in 1869 and his father 2 yrs later.
The subject of this biography was reared to farming in his native country, an occupation which he followed in the US until 1844, when he opened a small brewery in Liberty Township, not far from Taos. He was forced to adopt primitive methods in order to operate this enterprise successfully, such as carrying water by hand from a spring a considerable distance from the plant. After operating it for a number of years he purchased a brewery in Jefferson City, which he operated for a number of years, when he retired from the business.
For many years he had been a prominent stockholder in the First National Bank, being rated as one of the welathiest men in Cole County.
He served two years as Sheriff in this county and one term in the city council. For many years he had been an honored member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of this city.
Mr Wagner belonged to that sturdy class of German pioneers upon whose honesty and industry their children and other descendants can look back upon with pride. While a foreigner by birth, he was a firm believer in American institutions and customs. The public school never had a warmer advocate, and, in fact, he not only believed and practiced ideas consistent with a free country and a free people but impressed the same very emphatically on those who came in contact with him. There are hundreds of men yet living in Cole County who can testify to Mr Wagner's liberality and forbearance. It is doubtful if a man in Cole County intended a helping hand to people who needed help as often as Mr. Wagner. Those who knew him intimately will join in saying that a kinder-hearted and more generous man never lived, and he was one who never oppressed the poor nor permitted it to be done.
Mr Wagner has been married three times, but had no children by his first two wives. He married Miss Catherine Wulfrum of this city in 1848, who survies him, and of this mariage thirteen children were born, of which the following are living: Contrad, Lawrence, William W., Henry, Christopher, Louis M and Tressa, the latter now Mrs George Peasner. Christopher is a merchant at Sacramento, Cal., and Louis M is a prominent Joplin (Mo.) attorney. The remainder of the sons are well-known and prominent businessmen of this city.
The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the German Lutheran Church. All the absent relatives of the family have been telegraphed for, and they will be here to attend the ceremonies.

1900 HISTORY: The Illustrated Sketch Book and Directory of Jefferson City and Cole County, Pg 374: "George Wagner, deceased, was born in Schwarzach, Bavaria, February 13, 1821, from which place, at the age of twenty, he immigrated to America, and settled on a farm in Cole County, near Osage City. His education was in the private schools of his native town in Bavaria.
In 1846 he built a brewery 2 1/2 miles west of Osage City, this being the first one established in the county. He continued to operate this enterprise successfully until 1870, when he removed to Jefferson City, purchased the plant (now owned by Moerschel Bros.) which he continued to operated until 1886, when he sold to his sons, Conrad and Lawrence, who in turn disposed of their interest to the present proprietors. He was elected Sheriff of Cole County on the Republican ticket in the Fall of 1878 and re-elected in 1880. He served as Alderman of Jefferson City a number of years. 1928 50th WED ANN: Post Tribune, Jeff City Monday, Oct 8, 1928 - 50th Wed Anniversary: "Mr and Mrs Conrad Wagner, 623 East High Street, pioneer residents of this section, are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary today. Members of the family have arrived here from various parts of the country, and a banquet this evening at the Missouri Hotel conclude the day's celebration.
Mr and Mrs Wagner, aged 79 and 70 years respectively, have lived in Jeff City a greater part of their married life and head one of the most prominent families of this section.
Seven children were born: Otto and George, twins, died when three months old. The others were Adolph, Edwin, Frieda, Emil and Paul. The first three are married. There is one grand daughter, Miss Ruth, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Adolph Wagner of Jefferson City. Mr and Mrs Edwin Wagner reside in St Louis, Mr and Mrs Wm Herfurth reside in Boise Idaho, as does Emil Wagner. Paul resides in Marshfield, Oregon.
Mr Wagner was born May 1, 1849, nine miles east of Jefferson City near Schuberts, where his father and grandfather settled in seven years before. The National Highway which was then just being completed, ran through this farm. Mr Wagner assisted his father in farming and in the brewery business which they had established on the farm. They resided there until 1870, when they left the farm to come to Jefferson City where they purchased the old Gundlefinger Brewery. The Brewery was then conducted under the name of the C and L Brewery Company until sold to the Moerschel brothers in 1892.
During the years in the brewery the Wagners installed the first ice plant in Central Missouri. They later entered business in Colorado Springs, and in 1902 engaged in the lumber business in Missouri and Arkansas.
Mr Wager was prominent in the progress of Jefferson City in the early days. For twelve years, 1896 to 1908, he served as a stockholder and director of the First National Bank. He was greatly interested in any activities for the advancement of the city and was connected with many such movements. He retired from active business, however, twenty years ago.
Mrs Wagner, nee Theresia C Walther, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Walther and was born at the farm home near the mouth of the Moreau, January 8 1858. She spent her early years on the farm there and was educated in the schools in Jefferson City.
They were married Oct 8, 1878, the wedding taking place on the Moreau and was one of the largest affairs of its kind in those days. Hundreds of relatives and other acquaintances attended from Cole and Osage Counties.
The two well known residents, although advanced in age, are active and in exceptionally good health. Mr Wagner finds time to take frequent trips through the woodlands near here on hunting expeditions. He is one of the most ardent squirrel hunters in the section. Mrs Wagner keeps busy with her house work which gives her great enjoyment.
Hundreds of congratulations were extended to them today by friends in Jeff City and surrounding communities.
All the living children are here for the celebration."

c1876-1883 HISTORY: MO,St Louis Co-St Louis: M&M: "Paul J Wielandy was 12 years old when his father moved to St Louis. There he finished the fifth grade of the public schools, and at the age of 14 became an employee of the St Louis Book & News Co. Mr Wielandy... had the distinction of being appointed in 1878 by Gov. B Gratz Brown, a member of the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri. Three years later he joined the house of Shorb and Boland, then the largest book and stationery jobbers west of the Mississippi River and the oldest house of its kind in St Louis.
In 1883 when he was 19, he became a traveling saleman for that house. The territory assigned him comprised Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Indian Territory. He had the task of selling goods for this house throughout the great Southwest, almost up to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in a region in which Colorado alone had been admitted to the Union of the States, all the other sections still occupying the grade or status of territories. He had been on the road 2 years before the great chief of the Apache Indians in Arizona, Geronimo, was finally brought to bay. The most important towns he visited were cattle markets or mining centers. The phrase "Wild and Wooly West" was literally applicable to the social and econimic character of this region. He carried his samples by railroad train on the longer jumps, but probably most of his traveling time was spent in stage coaches. Paul J Wielandy is one of the few residents of St Louis who knows by actual experience the actual living conditions in the far West of 50 and 60 years ago. From the point of view of a stationery salesman, Mr Wielandy is author of one of the most important source books of western history, "The Romance of an Industry" in which he illustrates by his personal experiences and observations the history of the stationery industry through half a century. The 19 years of his work on the road as a traveling salesman gave him a remarkable insight into the life and character of the developing West and prove invaluable to the growing fortunes of the house he represented, since many of the contacts he made are important assets today of the Blackwell- Wielandy Co..."

Mr Wielandy has contributed numerous articles describing his early experiences and also representing the up-to-date wisdom of a veteran in the stationery business. A recent book by him is entitled "Selling Slants by an Old Drummer" a practical work on salesmanship, valuable in other lines than his own.
He belonged to the Masons, has been an enthusiastic lover of the outdoor life, enjoys hunting and fishing and has helped develop the playground of the Missouri Ozarks. He and his brother, Frank, developed a large tract of land near Dixon in Pulaski County as a camping and fishing resort.
Mr Wielandy married June 29, 1904, Miss Louise Angermueller, of St Louis. They have one daughter, Louisa, a graduate of the University of Missouri and wife of Campbell Alexander of St Louis..."

This is one of the foremost wholesale and manufacturing stationery and office supply houses in America. Its goods and services are distributed throughout the nation, and in the Mississippi Valley and in the states out to the Pacific Coast. The company name and its trademark products enjoy a reputation excelled by none other. In pointing to the bigness of the business the significant fact is the contributions made by Mr Wielandy himself through personal expertice and hard work covering a period of more than six decades. He was a pioneer salesman of stationery over the far West at the time when stationery and office supplies had a limited application to the pattern of life in a region where law and order had not yet been firmly seated. It is literally true that the foundation and much of the subsequent growth of the great house at St Louis were directly contributed by the veteran businessman, who for many years past has been president of the Blackwell-Wielandy Co..."

c1874-1973 HISTORY: MO,St Louis Co-St Louis: M&M: "He was 8 years of age when his parents moved to St. Louis, where he completed his education in the public schools.
During his summer vacation when he was 10 years old he was getting two dollars a week as a cash boy in a department store, and after school resumed in the fall he worked 4 hours every evening as a messenger boy delivering messages in the North St Louis residential district. For several years, beginning in Jan. 1881, he was office boy for the D S Gould Directory Co and at the age of 16 1/2 he was put in charge of the operation with supervision over 10 men who were collecting for the directories and advertisements.
At the age of 18 his older brother, Paul, was a traveling salesman for John T Boland, the book and stationery house which later was merged as a uinit into the present Blackwell-Wielandy Co. In July 1886, Boland's secretary asked Frank Wielandy to play sub on a baseball team during the absence of his brother Paul. This brought an invitation to regular employment with the Boland firm, and on August 1, 1886, Frank Wielandy was installed as stock clerk in the house. He continued in other departments until February 1888, at which time Mr Boland sent him out as a salesman to cover towns in Southwest Missouri, not on the route of the regular salesmen. His range of work was extended to Old Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, where there were then only about 7 towns of any note. He sold stationery and supplies in Oklahoma for a 1 1/2 years, after which he shifted to north Missouri and covered territory farther west over which his brother Paul had traveled. This new assignment included Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, and Frank Wielandy developed an extensive trade acquaintance over the region of the West and far Southwest and made his rounds through the long period of 28 years.
One of the friendships he had made in the Southwest was with A M Blackwell of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Blackwell in 1902 offered Frank the management of one of the firm's large general stores. He declined for the reason that he was not familiar with retailing or with general lines, but made Mr Blackwell a counter proposition, developing his theory that a splendid opening appeared for another jobbing house of the same nature he was then representing. The result of several conferences brought him and his brother Paul to a meeting with others in October 1902 at Albuquerque, New Mexico where the tentative plans were made for a new jobbing house in St Louis to bear the name of Blackwell-Wielandy Book and Stationery Co. This was the origin of the St Louis business which has been conducted continuously under the corporate title throughout the years of the present century. Frank Wielandy instead of locating in the headquarters in charge of sales management preferred to remain on the road as a better means of serving the further development and expansion of the Blackwell-Wielandy Co. and he continued that course until he had rounded out 38 years of continuous service as a road salesman, and in that capacity was a means of holding his large circle of personal friends and good customers in line with the fine policy of this old established house.
Outside of his own business, Mr Wielandy's interests have covered a broad scope, embracing child welfare, conservation of wild life and numberous welfare programs. For many years he had endeavored unsuccessfully to secure the creation of a bi-partisan department to handle all matters connected with the conservation of wild life, fish, forestry and natural resources, and finally in May 1935, he called a mass meeting and instituted the plans which a constitutional amendment was proposed and adopted and thus insuring that the department of conservation would no longer be subject to the fluctuating control of politics. Mr Wielandy in 1893 was instrumental in bringing about the creation of the Missouri Fish and Game League. About 30 years later he introduced the Izaac Walton League into Missouri and secured affiliation with the League of about 450 members of the Missouri Fish and Game League. At his personal solicitation about 1926, Congressman Harry Hawes became sponsor of a bill in Congress by which the initial project was confirmed for the developing lands adjacent to the Mississippi in what is known as the Winneshiack District of the Upper Mississippi for a fish, bird, and small mammal refuge. From this has extended a wild life conservation movement which embraces great areas of land lying along the Mississippi as far north as Minnesota. During the administration of Governor Hyde, Mr Wielandy was drafted for the purpose of instituting a state park system, and under his leadership the state acquired 6 or more great springs with adjacent bodies of land, and thus made a beginning of state parks with centrally located water resources scatterd over Missouri, particularly in the scenic areas south of the Missouri River. Most Missourians are familiar with the movement in recent years represented in educational campaigns for conservation of bird life. It was Mr Wielandy who stimulated much of this interest through articles in numerous magazines and through the widespread distribution of leaflets on the value of bird life.
Mr Wielandy put his personal enthusiasm and resources at the disposal of the movement in behalf of underprivileged children about 1920. That movement has since become international in scope and is the chief social service function of the Kiwanis International. About 1926 Mr Wielandy arounsed the public and the public school authorities to the need for securing a body of land within the city limits to serve as a site of a stadium. At about the same time he sponsored a movement for the expansion of the YMCA resulting eventually in the erection of several new buildings and additions to existing structures. One method he employed to interest men of large means in philathropic contributions of this kind was by showing that gifts of this nature were deductible from the income surtax. Mr Wielandy and his brother, Paul, and a group of associates were leaders in the raising of funds about 1922 for the erection of a modern hospital in North St Louis. His public spirit in behalf of needed civic improvements has supplied not only the leadership but the stratogems for overcoming the tax-resistance which often is the chief obstruction encountered by proponents of such movements. A number of years ago a measure which involved an essential transportation improvement to the manufacturing district in North St Louis was threatened with defeat by a gang of obstructionists who presented the argument of burdensome taxes. A public meeting was called and it seemed a foregone conclusion that a majority would be aroused against the proposed measure. Mr Wielandy brough into the meeting personal witnesses and credentials proving that the outstanding leader of the obstructionists was not a naturalized citizen and furthermore that he had paid out a large sum to canvassers who by corrupt use of this money had secured signatures to petition agains the street widening project. It was a spectacular revelation that caused further obstruction to the improvements to collapse.
Mrs Frank Wielandy is one of the direct descendants of the famous American Indian princess Pocahontes, who was born about 1595 and was called Amonate and later received her more formal name of Matcaxca, meaning "Little Snow Feather." When she was baptized a Christian in a church at Jamestown the name given her was Rebecca. The Indian name Pocahontas, bestowed later, means "a sparkling stream between 2 hills." All the traditional stories and accounts concerning her indicate that she exercised a powerful influence over her father, the war chief of the Powhatan confederacy of eastern Virginia. In Dec. 1608, she saved the life of John Smith, and at various times afterward brought supplies to the famished colonists. In April 1613 while on a visit to the Potomac Indians, she was captured by Capt. Samuel Argall and brought to Jamestown, where a year later she married John Rolfe. She is believed to have lived afterwards at Rolfe's country seat at Varine and in 1616 accompanied her husband to England. In England she was made much of, wined and dined and taken to the play, was introduced at court and her portrait was engraved by a celebrated artist. When about to return to Virginia with her husband she died and was buried beneath the chancel of St James Church at Gravesend, being buried March 21, 1617. She left an only son, Thomas, who was reared in England by his uncle and afterwards came to Virginia, where he took possession of this father's property and also a large inheritance from his grandfather, Chief Powhatan. Thomas Rolfe married Jane Poythress, a daughter of this marriage, also name Jane, became the wife of Robert Bolling, from whom are descended many branches of this Bolling family. The Bollings had a daughter named Jane who became the wife of Richard Randolph of Nenrico Co, VA. One daughter of Richard Randolph married a man named Clover, whose daughter in turn married a Young, a daughter of the Young marriage married a Ferguson and a Ferguson daughter married Jesse Whobray, whose daughter is Mrs. Frank H Wielandy of St Louis.
