Being unwell a great deal, having rhumatism & stomach troubles, I had to abandon my trade & came to this place in 1884, took up homestead, & been living here in WA, Spokane Co ever since.
The only reason my name appears on the rolls as Fredrick Wegner is that they would call me Fred even if I told my name as Ferdinand & been called Fred nearly everywhere I went, & the orderly Sargent, putting my name down as Friedrick, induced me to sign as such, without thinking of the consequences, & after my name was put down as Friedrich in my 1st 2 yrs service, it was put down the same again in my 2nd, being a veteran & taken from the first discharges. I think that in a few instances, you can find my name signed as Ferdinand on the pay rolls, don't know anybody back east as I have been away for so long. I was either it out when enlisted, Height I think, 5ft 9in, eyes gray, hair dark. Signed Ferdinand Wegner

1900 PENSION AFFIDAVIT: OR,Umatilla Co-Pilot Rock: Brother JULIUS WEGNER, signed 5 Jan 1900 residing Pilot Rock OR, 54 yrs: "I am brother of Ferdinand Wegner, alias Frederick. I am positive & know Frederick and Ferdinance same person. Ferdinand was given him by his parents. He was called by that name in childhood, but when he came to America, almost everyone would persist in calling him Frederick, although repeatedly told that his name was Ferdinand.
We were partners sev years in blacksmith business as near as I can recollect from 1874-1880 in the blacksmith and other business in Oregon. The above facts are of my own personal knowledge - I also know of his enlistment in 3rd Batt NJ Lt Artillery- and once during his serice he came home on furlough to visit me, he was at that time most always called Fred. When we were partners, he was called Fred. He is my brother and I know his name is Ferdinand, but he is called Frederick and Fred also."

I also know from personal knowledge, seeing him in NY with his Regt. that he was a soldier in the above-named service. Ferdinancd is my brother & I, his bro Frederick Wegner was not in the service. Further, I am positive there was not two of our family of the same given name, but that the 2 names being similar in pronunciation would naturally leave the to error of the mustering office, which was done many times before in similar cases..."

    F. C. Wegner, Cheney, was born in Prussia, October 21, 1841, and lived there until 17 years old, early learning the trade of a blacksmith. In 1858 he came to New York, where for 3 years he followed his trade. When the call came for volunteers, he joined the army and served through the entire war, belonging for the first 2 years to the 29th New York Infantry and for the remainder to the 3rd New Jersey Light Artillery. He participated in the battles of Bull Run, Cross Keys, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville and several other engagements and skirmishes. He was mustered out in May 1865, after having rendered valiant service and made a war record of which his family have good reason to be proud.
At the close of the war he went to Pennsylvania and again engaged in blacksmithing, but 2 years later he came to Portland, Oregon. He remained till March 1868, then went into mining and general merchandising until 1884, when he removed to Spokane County. He now lives 12 miles southeast of Cheney, where he has about 1000 acres of land and is engaged in farming and stock riasing.
Mr. Wegner is one of the most enterprising and successful farmers in the county. He is also a representative citizen of the community in which he resides, has always manifested a deep interest in everything tending to advance the interests of his part of the country and has filled creditably many important local offices.
He was married in Umatilla County, Oregon, in December 1876, to Amy E Johnson, and they have a family of 4 children: Ernestina L., William F., Herman C., and Edward. Mr Wegner is a member of Cheney Lodge, No. 21, I.O.O.F.
