HIST: Rawson-Coffin book pg 114, "Lucinda Elizabeth Rawson - My Grandmother," taken from file of grandson, Charles M. Owen:

Lucinda Elizabeth Rawson, wife of Wm Franklin Owen Sr was born 9 Mar 1860 at Payson,UT,UT. She cam to Ogden with her parents Arthur Morrison Rawson and Margaret Angeline Pace Rawson. Her girlhood days were spent here, all but 7 years in St George UT. Her education was limited, not having a great channce at going to school and not like it when she did.
Her father, a carpenter by trade, working at this and farming at the same time. She married at age 17, living on a farm near Ogden for 10 years. 5 children were born there. The farm belonged to Wm's father, James Owen. They were paying for it as they could. His parents decided to go back on the farm. Wm willingly released their rights, feeling they could start anew easier than his parents.
They went to Idaho, settling on a homestead in what is now Ammon, at that time nothing but sagebrush. Their 5th child was only three weeks old when they moved from Farr West to Idaho. The trip was made in a lumber wagon, trailing another wagon and horses behind.
Idaho Falls was called Eagle Rock. It consisted of Anderson Brother's Store (also the bank and post office), ZCMI, the railroad shops and a few crude dwellings.
The family slept in a wagon box, as the log house was not completed. Mr Owen was away most of the time, building a canal and cutting wild hay, leaving his wife and 5 small children, who laid terrified at night as the coyotes came right to the wagon, howling, waking the children, who would scream and cry with fright.
Mr Owen and Dr Wilson were the first Co Commissioners of this county. For 1 year, school was held in their homes, both summer and winter.
Lucinda's parents moved from Ogden to Ammon, where her father was made Bishop, serving for 25 years. 4 years after Mr Owen's death, 22 Feb 1927, Lucinda married a second time to Wm Rawson 19 Nov 1931.
Elizabeth was the first counselor in the Relief Society. She has been a visiting teacher since she was 17 years old. She is the mother of 12 children, 6 of whom are living.
Mr Owen was a farmer and also ran a dairy. A lot of work for Mrs Owen too. He, in connection with his son, Wm F Jr, owned a coal yard, dealing in coal, ice and lime. The lime was furnished from a kiln on their own ranch. They owned 2 homes in Idaho Falls, now living in the one on Eastern Avenue. Mr Owen was an invalid for 6 years.
This sketch was written for a Sunday School class, by a member, who tried to get them to tell of their romance, but they just laughed. They have the love and respect of their Sunday School class in Idaho Falls. This was taken from the files of a grandson of Mrs Owen, Mr Charles M Owen of 810 Catherine St, SLC UT.

NOTES: "A Biography of William John Rawson" compiled by Ida Rawson Russell, dau, page 155 of Rawson Family Genealogy Book, copy of Pam Hallmark Wagner:

My father, Wm John Rawson, born Aug 21 1873 at Harrisville,Weber Co,Utah, son of Arthur Morrison & Margaret Angeline (Pace) Rawson. The summer he was born his father bought some land in Harrisville and moved his family there from Ogden. They built a house on the bank of the creek. It was made of logs and the windows were small openings with cloth tacked over them and a quilt tacked over the door frame for a door. 2 yrs later his father built an adobe house with board floors, doors and windows. They were very happy in this new home. His father was a carpenter by trade and was away from home so much of the time, so a great deal of responsibilities of the farm work fell on father, as he was the oldest son.
In 1886 when father was 13, his father's family, with several other families, moved from Harrisville on up to Idaho and settled near the little town of Iona, not far from Idaho Falls. This was a new country, sparsely settled and covered with sage brush. It had to be cleared and irrigation ditches made before any crops could be planted. They worked hard and spent many long hours pioneering this country. Their homes were made of logs they hauled from the canyons, with dirt floors and roofs and small openings for windows.
They went to Church at a branch of the church at Iona until one was organized, with Grandfather as presiding Elder at the ward called South Iona. The next yr they built a church house and Grandfather was ordained a High Priest and Bishop by Heber J Grant, on Nov 15 1891. He was given the privilege of naming the new ward, and he named it Ammon, honoring the son of King Mosiah in the Book of Mormon. Father was sustained as Sec of Sunday School.
The young people there had to make their own recreation which consisted mostly of parties, dances and buggy rides in the summer, skating and sleigh riding the usual dances and parties in the winter. Father was always fond of horses and boasted of having the fastest team in town and he seldom lost a race. In the winter the snow was so high they raced over the fences.
Father was chosen to go to Logan to take a course in the MIA work. He was there one term. Before going there he was Ward Clerk and Pres of the YMMIA and after he returned, he was made First Assistant to the Pres of the Stake Board, a position he held as long as lived in Ammon.
Father and Mother grew up together there in Ammon. Mother was Nancy Ett Southwick. She was sec of YWMIA when Father was Pres of the YMMIA. They were married Dec 18, 1895 in the Logan Temple and their first home was in two rooms of his father's house, living their for 5 yrs. Their first three children were born there, 3 girls, the third girl died of croup when 9 months old.
In 1900, a group of Latter-day Saints from around Idaho Falls decided to go to Oregon, near LaGrande, and settle on a large tract of land there. 23 families, including Grandfather Rawson's family, Father and Mother, and several of Father's brothers and sisters with their families. There was a branch of the Church at LaGrande and on June 9, 1901, Father was ordained a High Priest and Bishop by Mathias F Cowley and set apart as Bishop of a new ward. The town was called Nibley, in honor of Charles W Nibley, who was at that time a Counselor to the Stake Pres.
Our home there was on a 5-acre plot and we had a nice frame house, a large barn, well house, granery and a fruit and vegetable cellar. We had fruit trees, a garden plot, plasture and flowers and shrubs were everywhere. Everything grew so fast in this nice climate. Our happiness here was not to last. The families had been promised that the land would belong to them after they had farmed their alloted land 5 yrs, but through a breach of contract, they were all ordered to move. Their houses were all torn down, with the exception of our house, which was moved down to the river bottom and was there yrs later.
The spring of 1905, Father rented a 700 acre farm at Wallow, Oregon. The crops were good there, but there was a money panic, and it was necessary to give up this farm. We then moved to Nampa, Idaho, but that venture proved unsatisfactory.
In 1910 Father moved his family to Odgen, Utah to 537-29th St, in the 9th Ward. His first position there was Ward Teacher, then teacher in the Parent's class in Sunday School, and then as Superintendant of Sunday School, holding this position for 7 yrs, at which time the ward was divided.
Our home was in the new ward and Father was released from Sunday School and set apart as Counselor to the Bishop of the new ward, the 18th Ward. He held that position for 2 yrs. He was in the weatherstripping business at this time, and many of his jobs were in Salt Laake, so he decided, in Nov of 1927, to move his family there.
He rented a house on 17th South, in the Waterloo Ward. It was while living here that they started doing work for the dead. The next yr they bough a home on 9th East and 13th South, in the HawthorneWard. Father and Mother were called on a 6-month mission to do endownment work for the dead and did one name each week, never missing an assignment. About this time, Father was chosen as chairman of the Genealogical Committee for the Ward.
Father took a class in research and spent many hours in the Genealogical Library. He also helped the ward members with their research work. He has a typewritten list in his Book of Remembrance of 346 names that he and Mother did the endownment work for while they were living in the HawthorneWard.
After Father retired they moved out to Taylorsville, where they could have a small acreage and farm animals. He was appointed to the Genealogical Committee and in a short time had a fine group doing Temple Work. They had the honor of doing more ordinance work than any other group had ever done in that ward. He was asked to work on the Stake Genealogical Board. He took care of the Sealings for the Stake.
He was called to be a Temple Officiator, to work 3 nights each week. Sometimes he worked 5 nights in a week. He also spent several days a week at the Genealogical Libraary, and was also responsible for seeing the work was done for all names sent in from the Family Organization, and was Pres of the Rawson Fam Org as long as he lived. Estella Rawson Christensen was the Secretary.
After Father had worked 4 yrs at night in the Temple, he was asked to work days, his official calling being of helping the brethren get ready to receive their first Endownments as Missionaries or their wedding day or when they came with their family to receive the greatest blessing ever to come to them, their Temple Marriage. It was a wonderful feeling Father had, knowing he had a small part in helping members to take this step forward on their way to Eternal Life. Father would talk for hours about this experience in the Temple and the friends he had made through this work.
He often spoke of his friendship with President David O McKay, which began during this assignment. He worked in the Temple 11 yrs and asked to be released when his health became so bad that he could not be depended upon to be there every day. He was honorably released as a Temple Ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple on April 18, 1957. He always said that he could not have held so many church positions if Mother had not been willing for him to away from home so much.
They had 11 children, one died as an infant. The other 10 are all living in Utah, except the oldest son, James. Father said that Mother did most of the raising of the family. She was such an understanding mother and regardless of our age, she seemed to make us feel our problems were important.
When I was small, I was always so proud of Father sitting on the stand, to the best looking one. On Dec 18, 1955 was their 60th wedding anniversary. On May 17 1958, he passed away and the family took part at the services as much as possible. He was buried in the Taylorsville Cemetery.

NOTES: "Mary Luetta Rawson Grow": told by dau Margaret (Lambert),pg157-Rawson Fam Gen Bk, possession of Pam Hallmark Wagner:

In 1851 Rawson fam went to Ogden, Pace fam sent to Payson. Evidently the Rawsons went to Payson for a time also, for their son Arthur Morrison & Pace dau, Margaret, became endeared to each other; in 1859-at 19 and 17 respectfully, were md. Aft 1st child bn moved to Ogden, 2 more children bn. Moved to St. George for a time. Another child bn. Again ret to Ogden, or Harrisville, where rest of fam bn-8 girls & 4 boys. 8th child: Mary Luetta Rawson Grow, born 10 August 1875 in Harrisville.
"Mother, wht do you remember most abt time you lived in Harrisville?" "Not much of anything. Just going to school and helping mother." "That is where you learned to knit & sew?" "Yes, I was with mother all day long. I didn't go to school until I was 11, & everything mother did around the house, I learned to do with her. She taught me to crochet, to knit & sew. When she sat down to work I would do whatever she did. If she wd knit, I wd knit; if she wd sew, I wd sew; if she wd crochet,I wd crochet. This is the way we would spend our time."
"How old were you when you made your 1st dress?" "I was 12. I cut out the pattern & material & made the dress all by myself." "You also learned to cook and make bread?" "Yes, as I said bef, everything mthr did,I did. I learned to cook, wash, make the soap we used & to do all the things mthr did." "How abt preserving the fruit?" "We all worked together to pick & prepare the fruit. We had trees on our place, wked together during the day picking fruit, in the evening helped to prepare it for drying."
"I remember Grandfather Rawson not wanting his girls to curl their hair." "Father was very strict how we girls dressed & wore our hair. He told us how we should dress & wear our things. He was very kind to us, but when I was old enough to go to school, I wanted to have curls in my hair, as I saw the other girls have. One eve, I put my hair in curlers. It was just abt prayer time when I had finished. I marched into the room with the curls in my hair. Fthr sd, "What is the matter with your hair, dau? If God wanted you to have curls, he wd have made them for you bef you came here. March right into the other room & take them out." I left the fam waiting for me, while I went in & combed my hair the way it should have been."
When mthr was 12 yrs, her fthr took her & her 3 brthrs to ID to homestead some land. While the men cleared the land of sage brush & planted crops, mthr cooked & kept house for them. When crops were planted, grandfthr began to build new home. It was a wonderful experience for mthr to help get the new house ready for her mthr & have all of the fam united once more. They had to travel 5 mi to the nearest church, so meeting were being held in Grndfthr's home & he became Br Pres.
The new community was named Ammon, their home was the gathering place for all the young people. Grndmthr loved to sing & dance, & she composed many songs for their enjoyment. Before long, they had a chapel built & grndfthr made Bishop. Mother taught Sunday School, then became sec, which office she held until her mg. Sev fams moved into the community. Among them was the Grow fam.
"Mother, what did the young people do to amust themselves in those days?" "Well, we had horseback riding, riding in the carts, things like that. Every- thing we did, we tried to make fun out of it. All the young people joined together & we were all sociable. We all had our work to do all the time, but we tried to make fun out of our work."
"How abt dancing-where did you go to dance?" "We had a place in the valley which was shady and nice & they fixed it up so we could dance there. We also went to dances in other communities north of us; sometimes we went to Idaho Falls west of us." "How did you travel?" "Sometimes we went by horseback; sometimes we went in a big wagon; sometimes we went by carriage or surrey."
"Where did you 1st meet Dad?" "Well, we had a home in ID & just one mi frm our home was my sis's home. One day I was going to visit my sis, & when I came to the gate a little way above her place, I saw a young man walking along. He had a smile on his face. I looked at him as though I expected him to say something. He caught on & sd, "How do you get across this crk?" I told him how to cross. He looked so wonderfully nice to me, as I looked at him, that I almost fell in love with him & I sd to myself, "If you don't get this young man for my beau, it won't be my fault." So that way, we got to talk & we had a nice little visit then. By the next Sun, the whole fam had arrived, & the young people had gotten acquainted with each other. He & my bro became friends & planned a little carriage ride aft Sun School. So my bro took me aside & whispered to me what they had planned to do. He sd to me, "If you don't mind, I wd like you to ride with him." I sd, good, go ahead. That suits me. So we had our carriage ride & all became good friends."
This young man who stole the heart of my mthr was David Henry Grow, son of Wm Moyer Grow of Huntsville. The Grow home was across the street frm the McKay home, & David O & David Henry were boyhood friends. David was named for his grndfthr, Henry Grow Jr, who was architect of tabernacle roof. Though it was not his ancestors, but his sweet smile that did the trick, that carriage ride was the beg of a sweet courtship, which culminated in mg in Logan Temple 1 Nov 1893. Mthr was 19, fthr 21.
A very memorable event in their lives just bef the wedding was a trip to SLC with Grndmthr Grow to the ded of the SL Temple 4 Apr 1893. Aft their mg, they returned to Ammon & built a home on the land given them by Grndfthr Grow. Mother resumed her church activities, working in RS as a visiting tchr.
During the next 7 yrs, 4 children bn: Jess 26 Jul 1894, Louella 6 May 1896, Pearl 14 May 1898, & Burt 6 May 1900. She continued to work in RS, taught Sun School class for a time & served as Pres of the MIA.
My father was then transferred by the railroad to OR, where Grndfthr Rawson had gone for his health. A small group of church members had formed a new twnshp, which they named Nibley, aft Charles W Nibley. Mother again was MIA Pres & helped nurse our neighbors thru a typhoid epidemic, which finally spread to the family. Though 5 died, our fam was spared, & on 11 Oct 1902 her 3rd son was born.
When father regained his health, moved his family to LeGrande OR, where the 6th child Margaret born on 10 Apr 1905. The following year on 14 July 1906, father was struck & instantly killed by a passenger train, & mother moved the family to Cove OR to be near her mother & brothers, where she purchased a home. Mother relates:
"The 1st Sun aft I moved into our new home, a knock came at our door, and it was Bishop John A Abbott and his two counselors, Joseph C Pixton & Joel H Orten & their wives, bringing a wonderful spirit with them. They told me the way to overcome my grief was to work & keep busy. They invited me to come out to all the meetings & be a teacher in Primary & Sunday School. I was never without work & the children always had plenty. I always tried to pay a full tithing & felt this contributed a hedge of safety to our daily lives."
Mother was a Sunday School & Relief Society teacher for a few yrs, then was Primary Pres for 6 yrs. Then the Bishop said he was going to give her a promotion and called her to be the president of the Relief Society. Then it became her job to care for the sick, and she spent many nights sitting up with the sick, while working to support her family.
About this time, Fred contracted rheumatic fever and remained under a doctor's care without much improvement. On 25 Mar 1915, Louella md IA Hallmark, & shortly thereafter, mother and Jess took Fred to Ogden, hoping to improve his health. Mother had him prayed for in the Temple, and he immediately improved and soon was able to attend school. Pearl and Margaret joined them there at the end of the school term.
During WWI my eldest brother Jess enlisted & mother went back to LaGrande to see him off. She secured a position in the hospital there, where she remained until aft the war.
On 1 Jan 1909 Pearl married CA Fowers in Ogden. At this time we returned to our home in Cove OR, where mother worked in RS, taking charge of the Temple clothes and care of the dead. Loved by all, she was ready to help anyone in need and on Sun afternoons, our home became a gathering place for the young people.
The next yr mthr became MIA president and was until we sold our home in Cove and returned to Ogden UT. Here we were members of the new18th Ward, where mother helped to organize the MIA, serving as a counselor until 1924, when she joined her two eldest sons in Oakland CA.
On 24 Jun 1925, Burt married Marion Shaefer and one year later, Jess married Lyda Fahay. The family now consisting of mother, Fred and myself, now moved to Berkley Branch. There, at an MIA party, J Edward Johnson introduced me to a young man who later became my husbund, Leroy Lambert 27Aug 1927.
Mother then moved to San Francisco, where she became active in SF Ward. On 28 Nov 1931, Jess's wife, Lyda passed away and mother went to Seattle to care for his 4-yr old son, until Jess married Phoebe Desilet a year later.
Upon returning to San Francisco, mother again became active in the ward and was later set apart as work director by Elder Needham Lambert on 4 Dec 1938. On July 28 1940, Elder Gordon Owen gave mother a special blessing which has since instilled in her a desire to live worthy of the promised blessing.
Shortly thereafter, Louella became very ill and mother rushed to Walla Walla WA to care for her until her death 28 Jan 1941. On 2 Aug 1941 Fred md Beatrice Wardell Coons. This marriage was later solemnized in SL Temple by Pr Waddoups 3 Oct 1951. During this time mother served as Magazine agent and aided their bazaars with her handiwork and pastries. In 1951, when the Church Authorities requested all members to attend the ward they lived, mother transferred to the Sunset Ward, where she served faithfully until ill health forced her release, but she continued to aid the Relief Society's many programs.
"Now mthr, would you like to add something in conclusion?" "I have always tried to live the best I know how, and I know when we try to live the Gospel and do the things we've been called to do, we learn our lessons, and I would say to others to live as near as what Jesus taught us to do and all will come well, not seeking for position, but striving only to live a good life." Mother now has 3 sons and 2 daughters living, and 11 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. My testimony is that the Lord lives and blesses us in all that we undertake to do, if we have righteous desires in our hearts. "Amen."

Friday, January 1, 2010, Life Sketch of Norma Dorine Hallmark Hawkins , Written by Eli Kit Hawkins
I would like to thank all of you for being here today to remember Norma; especially those who have had to travel a long distance. I am very grateful for all the kindness and wonderful things you have said about Norma. Thanks to the Bishopric, the speakers and musicians for the many hours of preparation and your willingness to participate today. Thanks to those who are offering prayers. Thanks to the Relief Society for the food we will be eating later in the day. Thank you casket bearers, you are men of honor. Thank you all who have sent beautiful flowers. My cousin Steve Cherry who lives in San Jose, California, has set up a blog on the internet where you will be able to read stories, make comments and see pictures of Norma and my family, some of whom could not be here today. This is an ongoing effort that will continue for the next few days or weeks. The web site address is on your program. Thank you Steve. And a special thanks to our funeral director, Shawn Warenski, who has made a tremendous effort in behalf of my family.”
I love you, I love you, I love you” repeated three times. Where have you heard that before? I think Norma had to say it three times so that her words could catch up with her heart that was so full of love. She loved everyone. She would make dozens of calls every month, just to wish the people she loved “happy birthday”.
Norma found joy in caring for others throughout her entire life. She gladly put her own life on hold many times so she could help others in their time of need. I believe that was the theme of her life.
Norma was very grateful. She always said, “thank you” for even the smallest things. I have never heard my mother say a bad word about anyone. She loved to listen to others and was very humble.
Norma was born March 1, 1916 in Cove, Oregon a small town near LeGrande and soon after, she moved to Walla Walla, Washington with her family because of her father’s job with the railroad. Her father’s name was Ivy Aubra Hallmark, but everyone just called him “Bud”. And her mother’s name was Mary Luella Grow Hallmark. Norma was the oldest child in the family. She had a sister, Arleatha Betty Jeane, and three brothers, James David, John Ivy and Ronald Grow Hallmark.
Norma learned at an early age that she had to help out around the house and care for her siblings. Her sister, Betty Jeane, contracted tuberculosis and her mother Mary Luella had to take her to Seattle for treatments. Norma had to take over since they sometimes were gone for weeks at a time. Mary Luella’s sister in law died. She had a son named Bernard Grow who was three years old at the time. So Norma spent several months with the family taking care of the little boy until the family could get on its feet. A short time later in 1936, Betty Jeane died at the age of thirteen. This was difficult for Norma because she loved her so much. Little did she know that this scenario would play out over and over again in her life.
Norma was what you would call a “popular dancing partner”. She had lots of friends and sometimes her brothers would take her to the dances too. Dancing was her favorite pastime. However, after Norma graduated from high school, her mother was a bit worried because all the young men she dated were non-LDS. There were no eligible bachelors, in the small branch she attended. Mary Luella really wanted her daughter to be married and sealed in the temple. Now, Mary Luella had a sister, Margaret Lambert, who lived in San Francisco and Mary Luella and Margaret hatched a plan. They would tell Norma that Margaret needed help with her two boys, Richard and Jim, in order to get her into more, shall we say, “Favorable dating circumstances”. Norma was excited about the opportunity and left for San Francisco soon after.
Aunt Margaret lived near Golden Gate Park. Norma was so happy because there were lots of dances and church socials to attend. She sang in the choir, and at choir practice she noticed a handsome young man looking at her. She smiled at him and he smiled at her and the romance of her lifetime began to unfold. That handsome young man was my father, William Lester Hawkins. Soon, Les asked her to become his bride and she said, “I think I’m going to need to sleep on it”.
Before Norma could make a decision, she received a call from a friend at home in Walla Walla. The friend told her that her mother Mary Luella was very ill. So Norma returned home to find her mother ill with cancer. Her younger brothers needed a mother and her mother needed a nursemaid so Norma got to work. Years passed and one day Les came to visit. He said “Norma, this is the last time I’m going to ask you to marry me”. It had been five years since his first proposal. Mary Luella died of cancer at the age of forty four in 1941. After she died Norma was missing for an entire day. She was found curled up in a ball in the closet under the stairway where she had been grieving, alone in the darkness.
Les and Norma were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple May 27, 1942. This was the happiest day of Norma’s life, so far. Along with Les, Norma got a beautiful daughter, nine year old Patricia Lee Hawkins. Pat said, “Norma was more of a mother to me than my birth mother. I never felt like a step daughter.” I’m sure that was because Norma felt she was her daughter and loved her dearly. Les and Norma began their life together and lived in San Rafael, just north of the golden gate bridge. And it was there that she brought two wonderful sons into the world, David Lester Hawkins and Keith Jan Hawkins. Norma loved taking care of babies. At last she was living the life that she had always dreamed about.
In 1947 they moved to Utah. They purchased a home on eighth east in Orem that is now the site of an office building near University Mall. But in those days eighth east was a dirt road. Norma had her own horse named Queenie. She rode her horse every day up and down eighth east. One day some boys put a string of fire crackers in a mail box. As the horse passed the fire crackers went off and the horse reared up and took off galloping out of control. Norma was really frightened but said a quick prayer to Heavenly Father to save her. The horse stopped immediately and she was safe. Norma had great faith in the power of prayer.
Norma brought another son into the world soon after. Some of my first memories were of my mother reading to me. I remember that she called me into the house from playing outside to have a little rest. She did this every day. She always read exciting and fun stories to me. My favorite was a book called “A story to tell”. It had about fifty short stories and I would get a different one each day. I remember the soothing sound of her voice and how special she made me feel. I liked this so much that when school started, I decided to pretend to be sick, just so I could be home with her and hear a story. When I told her I was sick that day, she came quickly with a thermometer. She told me to keep it under my tongue for two minutes and then left the room. We had an old heating oil stove in our home. While she was gone I took the thermometer out of my mouth and put it near the heating oil stove until the temperature rose a little. It worked. She believed me and I got to stay home. I have such fond memories of her reading to me. It was so dear to my heart. It was years later, after I was a grown man, that we were talking. I discovered that my mother knew all along that I was playing a trick on her. She really didn’t mind at all because she loved our time together too. She looked forward to each time I played the little prank.
Norma was a wonderful baker. We had lots of cookies, pies, cakes and other scrumptious food while we were growing up. She endured all the illness, trips to the hospital, financial hardships, and challenges that life brings, with meekness. She had never ending patience for her very active children and always spoke softly and kindly. The worst thing I ever heard her say was, “you kids are really going to be in trouble when your father gets home”, but we usually never were. Most of the time, she defended us or tried to minimize our mishaps. My brother Jan and I were boxing one day. This was supposed to be an outdoor activity, but on this day we were in our bedroom. The boxing got a little out of control and the next thing we knew, there was a giant hole in the wall. We decided to cover up the hole with wacky plack cards taped together to the size we needed for concealment, which was about a square foot, but that just delayed our fate for a short period of time. This was one of those times. But after we received our punishment from Dad, she hugged us and told us how much she loved us. There were lots of other incidents but I don’t want to embarrass my brothers.
Dad died suddenly in May of 1970 with a heart attack. Mom was really lost without him. She decided to turn her grief toward the temple and worked at the Provo Temple for several years. She had the opportunity in her lifetime to perform over a thousand endowments for those who have passed on. Some time passed and she received a call that her father Ivy Aubra Hallmark had experienced a stroke. She went to Walla Walla and found that Grandpa Bud was partially paralyzed. She stayed several weeks and then returned to Utah. Who do you think she brought home with her? If you were thinking Grandpa Bud, you are right. She cared for him meticulously for several years. This was a great time for me because I got to know my Grandpa and it was one of the happiest times of Norma’s life because she was near the father that she adored. Grandpa Bud died in January of 1982.
Mother had an aunt, Cora Pearl Grow Fowers, her mother’s sister. She lived in San Diego, California. Soon after Grandpa died, Aunt Pearl, unannounced, knocked at Norma’s door. When mother opened the door, Aunt Pearl said immediately, “Norma if you don’t take me in, I’m going to walk into the Pacific Ocean and die”. They embraced and Norma cared for her for several years, until her death in October 1989.
And, so this was the pattern of Norma’s life. The aforementioned were not the only ones that Norma cared for until each time of need passed. And always she was there for us.
During 1996, I came to her door. I was unhappy about how my life had turned out, up to that point. She offered me words of encouragement. She said, “You have got to have hope and faith the future will be better.” I said to her, “How many times do I have to try”? And she said to me, “until you get it right son¸ until you get it right”, and that’s the miracle of our Savior’s love. Two years later, as a result of her encouragement, I got to go to the temple on a beautiful day in June and be sealed to the love of my life, my sweet wife Kris. And mother, each day I know I’ve got to keep trying to get it right and that is the miracle of a mother’s love. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen, Kit Hawkins

Walked into the bathroom, couldn't get up, couldn't use the walker. Rick was here and got him up. I put the walker away. He was happy with a wheel chair. [James David]-Dad called Sunday. Wanted to know what going on. Dad had 2 Dr appointments - come after that... says he loves Lorrie so much, so grateful for all she does - takes me here, takes me there, everywhere, so good to me. Takes eye drops-get all over his face..."
