    "Jack" lived in Broncho, Texas
April 13, 1963 visit with Molly and Izora McGinty [first child of Jacob Newton, who was 3rd child of James Minett Hallmark. Visited at home of Lindsay Allen Jackson Hallmark and as visited gravesites with them-Llano County.
Mollie is the second wife of William Jackson. She quilted 37 quilts while living 7 years before Lake Buchanon was moved. When the 8 brothers got together, they needed lots of quilts. Jack and Mollie retired from the farm in 1919. They thought they had done their part, so they quit and rented out the land. Near Buchanon, they were told to get out... not asked to, told to. One farm had 85 acres and the other 45 acres and were along the river. They had Pecan timber near the river. 1917 was the dry year and 1918 was pitiful. In 1919 they had a bumper crop so quit.
William Jackson, called Jack, would keep the seed. He gave half the cotton to Piercen and David [2 oldest of Jack and Athena]. Mollie worked in the fields, dropping corn and cotton by hand. When started failing, gave the business to Mollie. After quitting put $4000 in the bank for when it might fail, and when Jack failed, she did all she could with what they had. Never had to worry. Jack put away on Sunday, but enough to pay for funeral expenses, etc. Has money in war bonds to help her when sick. When he was out in the field, Mollie took him a drink and said, "let me see if I can turn the plow to break the land." She couldn't hold the plow out, would let go... it was too deep; chopped cotton, gathered corn and threw in wagon.
Mollie's mother was cold, so heated a rock and put it in her bed. Mollie wore wool socks and sleeps between blankets only, no sheets. Her mother lived with her for a few years. Would start about 3pm to fix her bed. Molly now understands why - it was something to do.
Jack and Mollie had a span of mules which they kept on the lot all of the time - mules want to run away when hook them up. They were throwing corn one day, holding the mules -thought they would not want to go after 2/3 wagon was full, so hooked them up and off they went... hit a tree and turned the whole wagon over. Had to work hard at Jack's. Our mules, "Tom and Mike" took off one day... chased them. Both Jack and Molly tried to hold them and both kids in the back popped up to see the chase. They hit a tree and stopped. Lillian, Piercen and Raymond hit their heads. Raymond cut a place on his head, but all he was worried about was if they were going to go to Jake's. Lillian wasn't more than 6 years old and awful sick from it. The mules always ran when they were out, because always locked up when not working. Finally sold them to Tom Clendennen. He really broke them by whipping them. Jack didn't whip them, but they didn't get out in the pasture for a year at a time. We fed them hay or corn and when we needed them, they were anxious to get out and work.
Jack and Molly bought a place right in front of the school in Tow. We lived there for 8 years. We lot the place on the Llano side before they moved the lake. Kept the kids and sent them to school. Some people lived too far from school to come, so Molly kept them - sometimes for 3 yrs. Kept Dee's and Hett's [Lindsay and Hettie] children 3yrs or so. Kept Piercen's boy, and Oscar, Lindsay's boy, and girl 2 1/2, Amy for 2yrs. Cricket didn't want to go to school. The first of the year was free and the second semester, they had to pay. One of the girls called Molly and said, "I guess I can't go to school because Daddy wouldn't have the money to pay the tuition." Molly told her to come and stay with her, and she paid for it.
Jack and Molly moved from Burnett to Valley Springs and had an old wood stove and drew water with a bucket. She sold her washer and did washing by hand. She didn't have any place to keep her machine in Burnett and one day the kids said why not sell it. She gave it away and now they ask why she did it. Jack and Molly lived in the house where Gladys [Vonnie's wife, 6th child of Jacob Newton] lives now.
Molly tried driving a car once - asked Jack if she could, so she got in and drove it almost into a tree, and that was the last of her driving.
When Lake Buchanon flooded, they had to move 600 or more graves. Pennington Cemetery has 12-15 Hallmarks buried there... James Minett too and 2 babies by first wife... 6 children. [we only have 7 names of Hallmarks buried there where are the others? babies, children?] So many people didn't want them to move the cemetery... wanted to put a cement wall around it, but this wouldn't work. The Hallmarks asked to have the bodies moved right away.
People were paid too little for the land that was taken. The Hallmarks were living along the river, and the state just came and took it. It had a huge Pecan orchard [45 acres]... had all the fish they wanted to eat... can't catch any there now. Caught some as big as 60-75 pounds, some by hand [Jack]... one hung from the shoulder to the ground... could see it in the water and as the water cleared, just reached in under the gills and pulled it out. Jack liked his cold fish... cooked up first, then put it in flour sacks and eat it cold. Molly got tired of it. "I just couldn't take it." Catfish is good cold.
Lake Buchanon... had to move 6 cemeteries when building the dam. Bought new boxes for each body. Some bodies were there many years and had to be scooped up... darkened dirt... and put in casket.
Jack lived in Valley Springs before moved to Burnett.
