    Martin was born in NYC and moved to Hackensack, Bergen, NJ with his parents around the year 1706. As an adult Martin made his home near the Ponds area of Pompton Plains. He lived in a stone house just beyond "the point of the mountain" later removing to Brockholst Place (also in Pompton Plains). Martin and his wife joined the Pompton Plains DRC at its inception in 1737. Martin's large estate was distributed among his daughters and their children, some of whom married into important military and political families. Martin's will, found in "Documents Relating to the Colonial History of New Jersey, Calendar of New Jersey Wills, Volume VI, 1781-1785, p. 338" follows: "1785 June 25. Ryerson, Martin, of Pompyon, Bergen Co.; will of. I desire to be buried by the side of my children in the Ponds Church. Daughter, Christinetie, the wife of Casparus Schuyler, land I had purchased of Abraham Garritse, of 200 acres, which lies on Hardins Plains; and if she die leaving children, then 1/2 of said lands on the north side is to go to said children, and the other 1/2 to my grandson, Ryer Van Houten. Grandson, Martin Van Houten, when he 21, is to have the plantation which is near the Pond Church, on south side of the road; and he is to pay his sisters, Martyntie and Mary, each 50 pounds. If my daughter, Elizabeth Van Houten, should be left a widow, then she may have the use of all of the lands I have given to her son, Martin Van Houten, while she is a widow; and I reserve out of said lands 1/2 acre for a burying-place. Grandson, Peter Schuyler, my plantation where I live of 230 acres, and he is to pay 25 pounds to his brother, Arent Schuyler, and to pay to his sister, Anna Schuyler 125 pounds. Grandson, Arent Schuyler, a lot of 20 acres which I bought of Nicholas Slingerland, at a place called Crooked Pond. Grandsons, Martin Van Houten, Peter and Aaron Schuyler, the cedar swamp in Romyn's tract, at the Ponds. All land may be rented until each legatee is of full age. Wife, Elizabeth, the use of the parlor, and use of my young wench, Sock; and my wife to be supported by my Executors while she is my widow. Granddaughter, Anna Schuyler, negro woman Hannah. My old Jimm, Cuff, Prince and Old Suck, to be sold at least 20 miles from my dwelling. Executors - friend, John Ryerson, and my sons-in-law, Philip Schuyler and Corinus Van Houten. Witnesses - James Christie, Cornelius Hennion, William Drummond. 1785, Nov 2. Codicil. My daughter, Christinetie, wife of Casparus Schuyler, being deceased, I give 1/2 part of the land to be taken off the north side to my granddaughter, Esther Colefax, and the other 1/2 to my grandson, Ryer Van Houten, when he is 21.     In this instrument the testator declares that "being sick and weak in Body but of a perfect mind and memory thanks be to God," he provides that "my loveing Wife Mary shall enjoy all my estate both real and personal during she remains to lie my Widow but if in case she shall compleat a second marriage she shall then have the sum of Twenty five pounds current money. Item I give unto my eldest son George Reyerse one of my Guns as being my eldest son and heir at law Item I give and devise unto my three sons George Reyerse Richard and Martin Reyerse all my real estate whatsoever and wheresoever in the County of Bergen to be equally divided . . . Item I give and devise unto my two youngest sons John and Theunis Reyerse all my real estate or lotts I have in the City of New York to be equally divided both in quantity and quality between them I t em I give and bequeath unto my four daughters namely Gaine, Mary, Ann and Hester each of them the sum of One hundred pounds current lawful money of the province of New York to be paid by my five sons after the youngest Son shall arrive to the full age of twenty one year."
