    John DeBow was a son of Garret DeBow and Maria Van Derbeek.

    John & Jannetje Van Ness married 8 May 1764, Pompton Plains Reformed Church, Pompton Plains.

    They were the parents of Maritje (Mary) b. 29 Dec 1764, Tryntje (Catherine) b. 11 May 1766, Gerret b. 10 Mar 1768, Hendrick (Henry) b. 7 Jan 1770, Johannes (John) b. 10 Feb 1780 & Paul b. 27 Oct 1783.

    John DeBow was a Captain in the Eastern Battalion of the Morris County Militia during the Revolutionary War for Independence. He and his men were at Monmouth 21 Jun - 3 Jul 1778 & saw action during the Battle of Monmouth 28 Jun 1778, served at Acquacknonk Sep 1778, Minisink from 29 Oct - 11 Nov 1778 and at the Battle of Springfield 25 Jun 1780.

    He is listed on page 388 in The Official Register of the Officiers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War compiled by William Stryker, Adjutant General of New Jersey via executive order of Theodore F. Randolph, Governor of New Jersey 1 June 1870.

    John DeBow is assigned Patriot # A031210 by the
    Daughters of the American Revolution.

    John was the 3rd son of Capt. Johannis DeBow and Jannetje Van Ness.

    His age at death is recorded as 61y 8m.

    His will, in which he refers to himself as "John Debow, Esquire", was proved 6 Nov 1841. John DeBow had served as a Justice for Morris Co. 1832 & 1837 thereby earning the right to add Esquire to his name.

    In his will, he names all his children by his two wives.

    His first wife was Sara Drummond daughter of William Drummond & Annaetye Spier.

    Burial location data refers to the lot # given in 1931 by Edwin A. Doremus when he recorded the cemetery. Since the church records were destroyed in the fire of 24 Oct 1937, it may not be possible to know what the original church assigned lot numbers were.
