WHAT THIS? Cemetery located at "White Oak Grove (Baptist) Church since 1872" on Highway 5 coming in from north to Browning, maybe 2-3 miles north. John has a large stone behind the church. Most of Brumbaughs buried there. In the newer area to the left of the cemetery are Aurelia and Lillian and 2 more girls of George, son of John (according to Ray Alspach of Browning) and perhaps Theodore Dotson, Virginia's boy.

1984 DEATH: MO,Sullivan Co-N Browning: Marcus Oliver Alspach died suddenly his home on the morning of March 21k 1984 at the age of 95yrs 1mo and 3days.

He was married in Browning to Elsie Pearl Kennedy on Dec 24 1911. To this
union were born Raymond Marcus Alspach, Sr, who preceded him in death on Feb
3 1984, and Dorothy Lucille Alspach Brandel of Vienna, VA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, his parents, his brother and
four sisters.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his daughter Dorothy A Brandel, who with
her husband Col RE Brandel had been with him during the past 6 wks; his sister
Meda Alspach Freeland and her husband Glenn Freeland of Browning; his sister
Opal Alspach Keithley of Tulare, CA; his grandson Raymond M Alspach Jr and his
wife Phyllis of Browning; four great grandchildren and their families, which
include 5 great great granchildren-Marlin Alspach, his wife Marcia and daughter
Misty; Dean Alspach, his wife Terry and daus Amanda and Nickie; Kathy Alspach
Tornow, her husband Michael and sons Wesley and Bradly; Kerri Alspach Epperly
and her husband Chris; other relatives and a host of friends.
A self-made man, Mark led an active business life until the time of his
death. He attended the Browning HS and Kirksville St Tchrs Coll, then to
follow a 10 yr teaching career with summertime pursuit as a carpenter building
homes in Browning...a superb athlete, excelling in speed & figure skating, bxg
horsemanship. He changed his profession to metal fabrication, service station
1930s, feed & seed grains, farm & hunting supplies and followed farming.
Browning town Marshall, Linn Co Deputy Sheriff over 20 yrs (reputation as
a strict law and order man) Mbr of Modern Woodmen of Amer. Second oldest mbr of
First Baptist Church of Browning, serving as Superintendant of Church for yrs.
The community has lost a pillar of strength! Mark's life was an example of
professional skills, honor and service, which were during his lifetime emulated
and deeply respected by his family friends and bus associates.
A combined funeral service for Mark O and his loving wife Elsie was held
at 2 pm Sunday Mar 25 1984 at the Browning 1st Baptist Ch. Casketbearers: Dr
Max Freeland, James Calhoun, Ray Nickell, Keath Crooks, David Long, Ken
Jennings.
Interment in White Oak Cem under direction of Schoene-Wright Fun Home.

May 1992: Kathryn Varko Smith (Leo): Peggy and Sloan lived on the ranch where Jule lived last. When Jule lived there, Peggy and Sloan lived in house in Echo. The ranch house began to have bees nests and honey oozed from the walls and Jule had to move out and lived in a trailer on the ranch. Doris enjoyed Aunt Peggy's girls and spent time in Portland with Aunt Peggy. Linda (Leo's girl) lived in Portland and saw Aunt Peggy, her mind beginning to wander and could not remember things too well.

The last 4 of them was going to this little red school house & Vern graduated that year from the 8th grade. He must have been 17 yrs old. Their family had moved a lot, & they didn't attend school regular."

He was there a week, then back to Pendleton in an ambulance, there in the hospital for 2 weeks, then home.
Vern rented a little meat market, & we thought that might solve the problem of a living, but it was such a hassle, that after 2 yrs we moved to Milton Freewater & he worked in a meat market."

June 1992: June Smith Hallmark: Grandad drank a lot. Even after he joined the church he thought a cold bottle of beer sounded good. He had diabetes and knew he shouldn't have been drinking, but he drank until he joined the church. The drinking made him difficult to live with at times. I remember Gram having a pot of coffee on the stove, in an old green teapot. Loved tea, hot or cold. Dad had shingles and walked the floor with the pain. Diabetes caused him some problems, especially when he went to the hospital - had a bad hot water bottle burn on his leg, took a long time to heal."

May 1992: Kathryn Varko Smith (Leo): Peggy and Sloan lived on the ranch where Jule lived last. When Jule lived there, Peggy and Sloan lived in house in Echo. The ranch house began to have bees nests and honey oozed from the walls and Jule had to move out and lived in a trailer on the ranch. Doris enjoyed Aunt Peggy's girls and spent time in Portland with Aunt Peggy. Linda (Leo's girl) lived in Portland and saw Aunt Peggy, her mind beginning to wander and could not remember things too well. Jule and Doris had some fierce quarrels. Jule died of cerebral hemorage. Uncle Claude had alzheimers (sp).



NOTES: Uncle Jule lived in big house owned by Aunt Peggy. He graduated from high school and went to Seminary College at Oregon State.
