The funeral of Marie Menuteau was attended by her cousin Louis Martineau, barrel maker (tonnelier). He might have been her own cousin, but given his name it is possible that he was her husband's cousin. From File 1 (M3666) deposited at the NY Genealogical & Biographical Society, 122 East 58th St., NY, NY 10022, letter to Jamuel P. Stevens, 312 Sheridan Ave., Piedmont, CA 94611-3814 from a Mrs. Hill. Letter is in response to one from Mr. Stevens dated Oct 29, 1992 in which he mentions his ancestor John Martineau, born 27 Sep 1793, Richmond, Staten Island and his wife, Eliza Mears, born 13 Apr 1806, Fabious, NY. She provides all information on the Martineau (Martino) family in the Staten Island parish registers of the French Hugenot church.

"Francois Martineau became a member of the French Church in New York July 20, 1670. In 1676 ninety acres of land were laid out for him on Staten Island. Soon after he married Hester Dominees, widow of Walraven Luten. Their son Steven was baptized 1679. In 1683 Francois with others objected to the appointment of an English minister on Staten Island. In 1694 he was granted land on Old Town Road. His will in 1707 names his wife, Hester, his grandson Vincent Fountain, son of a daughter who married Vincent Fountain, Sr. The name Stephen continued until 1801 when the Stephen Martineau who owned the present farm colony died.

Gaston Martineau, a surgeon of Dieppe, settled in Norwich, England in 1685 and was a French refugee. The family on Staten Island is a collateral branch and were on Staten Island before Gaston left France."
    Hus - Francois Martineau
The records of their marriage were apparently lost with other French Huguenot records
Francois's will was probated 1 Oct 1707. He may have been one of those French Huguenots
who denizised, left their wills here and some returned to the U.S. a few years later. We have n no record of Francois's death. He had a 1st wife & three children who died in France.
From the "Revised History of Harlem" by James Riker,N.Y. 1904 (Henry P.Toler (revisionest)
"Francois Martino and his friend, Jean Belleville, joined the church at New York, Jul 28 1670, being the first mention of them. The latter was from St. Martin near La Rochelle---perhaps Martino was---this early association and their later intimacy seeming to favor it. Whether Belleville was he who was called le Chaudronnier,or,by the English, the tinker, as the first signifies, I am not able to determine, but Jan Tincker was enrolled in the night watch at Harlem, Nov 7 1673, and went to Staten Island where he held property, as did Belleville. Martino had 96 acres of land on Staten Island, laid out for him Apr 24 1676, near the "Iron Mountain." To this Governor Dongan added 35 acres, in 1685. He married Hester Dominees, widow of Walraven Lutin, or Lutine; issue, Stephen, born 1679. Martino, in 1683,was foremost among the French and Walloon residents in sustaining the French worship. His will, made 1 Oct 1706, and proved 5 Aug 1707, gave his estate, on the death of his widow, to his two god (grand) sons, Stephen Martino (son of Stephen, deceased) and Vincent Fontaine Jr.(a son of Francois's step dau. Anneken Lutten, dau. of Hester Donrinees & her 1st hus.Walraven Lutten) (See Clute's Annals of Staten Island) ." When Francois came over to Staten Island he also settled where his future wife, Hester, was living with her first husband. This first settlement became known as "Old Town".
No description of Francois's character has been preserved by posterity. The few facts about him in the records indicate he was a determined & spirited person interested in creating a meaningful & successful life. It would appear that he was courageous and not the least bit shy of fighting for what he thought was right. The people of Ile de Re are known to be independent & strong willed & perhaps Francois shared these traits as well.
There were no churches on Staten Island when Francois settled there about 1675. To get to a church he had to cross the bay (now New York Bay) to the French Church or the Dutch Church in New Amsterdam; or to the Brooklyn Dutch Church or Flatbush Dutch Church, these latter churches all served by the same minister at that time. No marriage for Francis Martino are recorded in any of these church records. At the time of his projected marriage the colony was under Dutch rule, the Dutch Church was the authorized church, and civil marriages were not permitted or recognized until the take-over by the British.
There are many deeds and Mortgages recorded on Staten Island in which the name of Franis Martino appears because his land was sufficiently large to occasion descriptions of his borders in other deeds.

N.Y. in the NYHS yr bk 1898, 974.7 C4h, p. 112. & is also recorded in "The Early Settlers of Kings County, N.Y", by Tuenis Bergen, 974.723 D2b p. 201, this record also states that Francois Martino md. Teuntje Martenooy of Flatlands,( Teuntje, another form of Hanna or Ann) had Stephen bap on the date listed above. The two witness's were Jean Belleville & Hester Casier (his wife). On the same day Belleville had his son Philip bap, & the witnesses were Francois Martino & Elizabeth Ravesteijn. The bap. registration notes that parents, witnesses, and children were all from Staten Island. Source:Recs. of the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush,Kings Co. New York, vol i 1677-1720 (New York: The Holland Society of New York,1998), p 391.Stephen died before 1706 as referenced in his fathers will & was not in the 1706 census of Staten Island.
" In the 1706 census of Staten Island a Stephen Martino, a boy, probably living in the family of Jean Belliville, and his wife, according to the placement of the names in that census. At this time the grandson Stephen Martino was the only male Martino living on Staten Island, his father and grandfather both having died." Summation of Dutch researcher Harriet Stryker-Rhoda.
There are no deeds recorded for Stephen, no administration of an estate, hence we must conclude he probably was living & working on his father's estate, clearing land of virgin forest, etc. He had no need to purchase a homesite, for as his fathers only son he would naturally inherit a large share of his father's estate. The probability is that he was interred on the farm as was the custom, since there was no estalished church or cemetery on Staten Island. There is a hiatus in the records of the Dutch churches in Kings county, New York from 1694 to 1706, a period of ministerial transition and civil disturbances. This coincides with the probable mg., b. & death dates of his family.

    (1) He appears as a sml. child in the 1706 census of Staten Island under the name of Martin or Marino (Marino or Martino is Italian for Martineau), found in Gen. & Hist Mics. Vol.1 by J.E. Stillwell p. 150. Will dated 13 Apr 1779 & Will proven 4 Aug 1779, thus the last date used as his death date.-- Abstracts of N.Y. Wills as published by New York Historical Society.
Stephen was probably born on the old Dorp Farm near the Northeastern shore of Staten Island. No birth or bap. record has been found for him. Probable reasons are the same as for his father Stephen Martineau. Things get a little confusing in this line for in 1779 there were three Stephen's living on Staten Island: This Stephen(c. 1701-1779 , then about age 75+; Stephen (1727-1801) then about age 52; And Stephen (1761-1822) then age 18.

Niece Ann Stilwill - need to find who her parents are of Benjamin's siblings

    Child 8 - Benjamin Martineau
He too was listed in his fathers will. Then we find Benjamins will in US/Can 974.7 B4ne Vol 4 p.215 Which tells us He died 23 May 1824 (ae 82 yr.) which gives us a birth Yr.. of 1742.
Wendell Martineau's research on the family as pertaining to Benjamin Martineau and the questions & mystery surrounding "His" children & did he ever marry & were his children mothered by a slave in his household. This is quoting Wendell Martineau, researcher: "We have always assumed he never married and indeed we have no proof that he ever did. His will was written up in such an ingeneous & unique way, which made it the only way possible to straighten out his parent's family group sheet. His will ,dated 26 May 1824, mentioned almost every member of the family either by name or, "to my niece or nephew, son or daughter of one of his sisters or brothers." One very interesting thing noticed in his will is that he very highly favoured his nephew Stephen Kettletas Sr. And his children. US/Can B4ne 974.7 Vol. 4 p 227, gives the death date & age at death of Stephen Kettletas Sr.. Also his first wife, "Ardrea Britton", died in 1813 "Ann", his widow, no maiden name given, died 28 Feb 1864, some eighteen years after the death of Stephen himself.
One very strange but interesting document came to light. File # 36, Misc. A p.396, Aug 20 1824, will # 134, then gives reference to Benjamins will # 277. What is the connection ?. Quote " Kettletas, John, b Aug 1824, Addra, about 15; Peter about 13; Ann 8 or 9; Louisa, 4-5;" grand- children of Benjamin Martino", children of Guardian their father, Stephen Kettletas." That says that Stephen Kettletas was father of the children making him the son-in-law of "Benjamin Martino" the grandfather.Let us now consider each child in turn: Addra 15. 1824 less 15= 1809. She was the daughter of Ardea Britton, Stephen's first wife who died in" 1813 ". Peter 13; 1824 less 13= 1811. Child of Ardea Britton who died "1813". We take it that John b. Aug 1824, was child of Stephen's current wife, Ann. Ann 8-9: 1824- 8-9 was born in 1815 (after 1813), She has to be child of current wife "Ann". Louisa,4-5;1824 less 4-5 was born 1819 has to be child of current wife Ann . Stephen Kettletas Sr. died 2 Aug 1846, age 81 Yr 29 da... His will names "Ann" as his wife.
Louisa Kettletas married a Samuel Frost. They were highly favored by her father in his will. This Samuel Frost was named executor of the will of Ann Kettletas, (1864), mother of Louisa(Kettletas) and Grandmother of Louisa Frost. By Anns own admission she is the mother of the same Louisa Kettletas, grandaughter of "Benjamin Martino 1824". This tells me that Benjamin Martino of 1742-1824 had a daughter Ann, maiden name Martino. The best I can do at this point is list Benjamins wife as, Mrs.Benjamin Martino on his Fam. Grp Sheet, or he was never married.. From the 1850 census of Northfield, Richmond, N.Y. p. 267, we find one Samuel Frost, head of house hold, age 32. His wife Louisa, age 31; Henry, age 7; Stephen, age 5 Anne, age 3. Apparently under the same roof was, Samuel Frost ,age 71; Catherine Frost, age 69; and Ann Kettletas. All three living grandparents of the frost children were living in the Frost home.
One disturbing thing keeps coming up; in all the census we have only found Benjamin as head of house hold, no recorded wife, and 7 slaves. The one question then is; was Benjamin married & his Mg. records lost as were his birth records, or did he father a child by a slave?, which was not an unheard of practice. We have one Jeremiah Martineau,(colored) who died of over exposier in New York City. We have record of Jack Martineau (son of a slave) who was given his freedom & was head of a house hold in Richmond County. We have on record one Lydia Martineau,(whose mother was a slave) who married a white man so the list goes on." Was he married to the mother of Ann, his daughter, wife of Stephen Ketteltas Sr.? Apparently Stephen Kettelas Sr. raised Benjamin's black (slave) children after he Benjamin died. All questions with no definite answers.

(Research):Not sure about marriage to a Jane Varley. JH Martineau journal makes no mention of it and it appears from his statements that both Julia and Lucretia are daughters of Mrs. Hawkins, which the AF has as Sarah. It is possible Sarah is the wrong first name and Jane Varley was Mrs. Hawkins. This all needs to be researched.
