Records indicate that in 1459 Reyner was known as Heer Reyner van Tuyl tot Est (The local lord in Est), a position later held by his son and grandson. Probably a powerful presence in the little village of Est,where they would have enjoyed some small measure of prosperity. He was probably about 60 yrs old at his death .

He had a 1st marriage (probably the daughter of Seger Segersz van der Poll & Johanna van Weerdenburg, as Seger was listed as (Sanders father-in-law), also in 1464 Sander was guardian for the underage chjild of Johan van der Poll, a son of Seger, & on 15 Oct 1473 for Johanna, daughter of Johan van der Poll. The guardianship was very often accomplished by a member of the family. Also the fact that Sander had a son Seger and that both Sander & Johan van der Poll had daughters called Johanna are indications.Sander was mentioned as a Schout of Brakel(1497), vassal of the Lord of Brakel (1494-1527), Servant of the marshal of Enssen,alderman of the High Bench of Zuilichem (1492). His Temple ordinances were done with a birth date of 1460, in the Logan temple. Further research by Rex Peterson determinred his birth to be Abt 1455, from a statement in "A Van Tuyl Chronicle"
FHL 929.273 V 369v, Chp 3 p. 46." Sander lived to be very old. Probably dying around 1527. But in Dec 1526 he was still alive,& engaged in lawsuits in Valburg. In view of the fact that he was already a mem.
(guardian) of one of his relatives in 1464, he must have passed the age of 80 in 1526. When he testified at a trial in Tiel in 1512 , he was referred to as an "old man".
Sander movedto Brakel in the 1470s or 80s. He served as an administrator for the military governor of the area.

Johanna's husband Caspar Turck acted on 12 Feb 1568 as guardian of Jan Sandersz van Tuyl.

(1498-1511) On Jul 13, 1510 Adam donated to his wife a morgengave of 300 Philipsguildens ( a gift of the bridegroom to the bride on the morning after their wedding night). He was taken prisoner & swore an oath - in the prison of Teil - that he never would fight against the Duke. He was married to Lijsbeth van Zeller & lived near Valburg (in the neighborhood of Nijmegen); his properties were situated in Elst & Meteren, with an Eefhuis at Nijmegen. Probably an innkeeper because between 1519 & 1523 the burgomasters of Nijmegen & Venlo, the Heren of Zutphen & Arnhem & others paid him for beer they had consumed, which he had delivered. She died before 3 May 1556. They had a dau. Marijken Sanders Van Tuyl; (Joost Van Dieden, t the brother of Barbara, is mentioned as her guardian) Marijken b. abt 1552. Source for this

Although no mention has been found of Sander as son of Reyner, there is a lot of indirect evidence. Reyner's son Arnt had common properties with his brother-in-law Ot van Herwijnen; properties that belonged to his father. Arnt's widow & Sander's widow and her son Jan were both heirs of Arnt. The son of Sander, Jan, was the first mentioned heir in the will of Wilhelmina van Herwijnen, the grandaughter of Reyner & niece of Sander. Part of the heritage was the uiterwaard mentioned by the wife of Sander's, Willemke to pay a tribute. Finally there was a common debt of the widow of Arnt van Tuyl, the heirs of Arnt van Tuyl, the heirs Ot van Herwijnen & the widow and the heirs of Sander van Tuyl. They have all been summoned by Albert de Ruyter, regarding anold claim.

mentioned together with his mother & sister on 13 Apr 1564, of age between 7 Jun 1570 & 17 Mar 1583, & died 18 May 1617 (around Midnight), married between 22 Apr & 24 Nov 1586.He was like his, father & father-in-law, alderman (and many times president) of the High Bench of Zuilchem(1589-1617. He was owner of a lot of property, inherited from his father-in-law, who was a member of the important family Van Oever, many of whom performed executive functions at Zaltbommel & Bommelerwaard. They were also major property owners in Gameren.

Stories regarding Old Decatur House, across from the White House, Washington D.C., always include Baron Van Tuyl, Russian Minister to the United States, who lived there ca 1824, Marie Beal in her publication, "Decatur House and it's Inhabitants" (1954), refers to Baron Van Tuyl as " Major General Baron Feodor Vasil Teil-Van-Seroskerken." "Baron de Van Tuyl was a gentleman of eminence in Russia. As the name Van Scroskerken indicates, he was of Dutch extraction, like a number of the Russian nobility of that time. He had risen to the rank of a Major General in the Russian Army, and had been accorded the distinction of having an Island named after him by a Russian sea captain." It has been pointed out that Otto is not a Dutch name but a German. However, living so close to Germany, it is probable that there was intermarriage. The final two paragraphs of the translation read as follows: "By royal decree of March 31, April 25, & 7 May 1822, it is ordained that all legitimate members of the house of Van Tuyl shall bear the title & style themselves Baron or Baroness."

A successful Gameren farmer, he incurred crushing debts after his first wife's death. He was the first Van Tuyl to leave no estate for his children. Death: Zuilichem Judicial Archives Geloftesignaat, 677:28, 26 Apr 1666. On this day Geerlof, Geertien and Geurt, children of the late Oth Jansz van Tuyl and Neelken Geerloffsdr, declared that they buried the dead body of their father, which they did in reverence to him, out of honesty and fatherly love, but not as heirs of their father, and only to assist with that which is required because of the death of their mother.

Jan Otto Van Tuyl was involved in a bar room brawl where he knifed a man in the arm & the man bled to death. A Judge & Schepenen examined the evidence & delivered their verdict:"Death by sword & confiscation of property, so Jan Otten as a fugitive from justice sailed for America to try a new life in the New World. Source (1) " He and his wife Geertruyd with their child of two years, rode the forceful waves of freedom from Amsterdam, Holland to the shores of a new land of wilderness. New York (New Amsterdam ) in 1663 in a ship named "De Bonte Koe"--The Spotted Cow.

Jan Otten Van Tuyl, named for his paternal grandfather,attained majority( 20 yrs.) between 29 Sep 1656 and 23 Apr 1661 in the village of Gameren near the city of Zaltbommel, province of Gelre (now Gelderland), implying that he was born there between 1636 and 1641. He died before his wife's 6 Aug 1696 remarriage to Teunis Jansen Lanen Van Pelt of New Utrecht. He married before 23 Apr 1661 Geertruyt Jans daughter of Jan Geritsz Van Lent and Lijsbeth Matthijs Van Gravenweert.
Convicted of murder in obstentia by the High Bench of Zuilichem on 6 Mar 1662, he was forced to flee to Nieuw Amsterdam & appeared in New Amsterdam on 16 Apr 1663 with his wife and a 2 yr. old child, aboard "De Bonte Koe". He spent the rest of his life in New York City, where he resided on Wall St. by 1686, earning his living as a mariner. They founded the Van Tuyl family in America.

He married a Madagascan women (or Women) with whom he had children by circa 1703. Wendell Martineau's research on the family as pertaining to Benjamin Martineau and the questions & mystery surrounding "His" children & did he ever marry & were his children mothered by a slave in his household. This is quoting Wendell Martineau, researcher: "We have always assumed he never married and indeed we have no proof that he ever did. His will was written up in such an ingeneous & unique way, which made it the only way possible to straighten out his parent's family group sheet. His will ,dated 26 May 1824, mentioned almost every member of the family either by name or, "to my niece or nephew, son or daughter of one of his sisters or brothers." One very interesting thing noticed in his will is that he very highly favoured his nephew Stephen Kettletas Sr. And his children. US/Can B4ne 974.7 Vol. 4 p 227, gives the death date & age at death of Stephen Kettletas Sr.. Also his first wife, "Ardrea Britton", died in 1813 "Ann", his widow, no maiden name given, died 28 Feb 1864, some eighteen years after the death of Stephen himself.
One very strange but interesting document came to light. File # 36, Misc. A p.396, Aug 20 1824, will # 134, then gives reference to Benjamins will # 277. What is the connection ?. Quote " Kettletas, John, b Aug 1824, Addra, about 15; Peter about 13; Ann 8 or 9; Louisa, 4-5;" grand- children of Benjamin Martino", children of Guardian their father, Stephen Kettletas." That says that Stephen Kettletas was father of the children making him the son-in-law of "Benjamin Martino" the grandfather.Let us now consider each child in turn: Addra 15. 1824 less 15= 1809. She was the daughter of Ardea Britton, Stephen's first wife who died in" 1813 ". Peter 13; 1824 less 13= 1811. Child of Ardea Britton who died "1813". We take it that John b. Aug 1824, was child of Stephen's current wife, Ann. Ann 8-9: 1824- 8-9 was born in 1815 (after 1813), She has to be child of current wife "Ann". Louisa,4-5;1824 less 4-5 was born 1819 has to be child of current wife Ann . Stephen Kettletas Sr. died 2 Aug 1846, age 81 Yr 29 da... His will names "Ann" as his wife.
Louisa Kettletas married a Samuel Frost. They were highly favored by her father in his will. This Samuel Frost was named executor of the will of Ann Kettletas, (1864), mother of Louisa(Kettletas) and Grandmother of Louisa Frost. By Anns own admission she is the mother of the same Louisa Kettletas, grandaughter of "Benjamin Martino 1824". This tells me that Benjamin Martino of 1742-1824 had a daughter Ann, maiden name Martino. The best I can do at this point is list Benjamins wife as, Mrs.Benjamin Martino on his Fam. Grp Sheet, or he was never married.. From the 1850 census of Northfield, Richmond, N.Y. p. 267, we find one Samuel Frost, head of house hold, age 32. His wife Louisa, age 31; Henry,age 7; Stephen, age 5 Anne, age 3. Apparently under the same roof was, Samuel Frost ,age 71; Catherine Frost, age 69; and Ann Kettletas. All three living grandparents of the frost children were living in the Frost home.
One disturbing thing keeps coming up; in all the census we have only found Benjamin as head of house hold, no recorded wife, and 7 slaves. The one question then is; was Benjamin married & his Mg. records lost as were his birth records, or did he father a child by a slave?, which was not an unheard of practice. We have one Jeremiah Martineau,(colored) who died of over exposier in New York City. We have record of Jack Martineau (son of a slave) who was given his freedom & was head of a house hold in Richmond County. We have on record one Lydia Martineau,(whose mother was a slave) who married a white man so the list goes on." Was he married to the mother of Ann, his daughter,wife of Stephen Ketteltas Sr.? Apparently Stephen Kettelas Sr. raised Benjamin's black (slave) children after he Benjamin died. All questions with no definite answers.

(Research):Not sure about marriage to a Jane Varley. JH Martineau journal makes no mention of it and it appears from his statements that both Julia and Lucretia are daughters of Mrs. Hawkins, which the AF has as Sarah. It is possible Sarah is the wrong first name and Jane Varley was Mrs. Hawkins. This all needs to be researched.

When 14 yrs. old John Martineau was Apprenticed to a Hatter but did not like it. When abt. 19 yrs. of age he got on a ship going to England, where he arrived without money or friends. He found a home to live in and got a place as a helper to an instrument maker by the name of Varley who gave him an education and his daughter Jane as wife. She soon died in an epidemic. He married a widow Mrs. Sarah Hawkins, dau. of the Earl of Stanhope, who had previously married a Capt. Hawkins of the British navy without her fathers consent, whom she offended by marrying beneath her station, so he disinherited her and cast her off. Sarah had her children by her first mg. and two children by her second hus. John Martineau.
John was in England about 7 yrs., attended Cambridge College where he studied Medicine & received a Diploma and then returned to the U.S., landing in Baltamore, Md.. when a yellow fever was raging. Sarah died with it at once leaving 4 Children.
John Martineau gave up the practice of medicine & studied Engineering, becoming a Civil Engineer. He traveled about building bridges, canals & a Railroad. It was while he was working on a canal with his brother Peter that they met the two Mears sisters Eliza & Mary Ann and were both md. (3)--J.H.M. Journal & a letter from Johns dau. Henrietta Lyon.
He md. (1) Jane Varley 1 Mar 1815 (2) Sarah Hawkins Abt 1816, both in England. He then came to the U.S. abt. 1821 & md. again to Eliza Mears ,on 29 Apr 1824 in Florida, Onondago,New York (3)--J.H.M. Journal.
His death, 6 Apr 1838, is found in the Cemetery Rec. of Onondaga, New York Film 017837

In Wendell Martineau's research his close scrutiny found this in --Jan 2001-- that in the 1830 New York census index his name is listed with an E. Martineau, but looking at the original handwritting he found it to be written C. Martineau, and found all names to correspond with his information---The 1850 census index of New York, shows no Cornelius Martineau but on the census itself is found his name,
Cornelius Martineau age 44 carpenter, wife Elizabeth 39, & a list of children, a son in-law and a Mother in-law. We find in the 1820 census that the John Betts family (his wifes family) grew up & lived in Castletown, Staten Island where Cornelius grew up.
