We speak of Grace Smith, 305 Ash St, who has lived in the valley for nearly 40 yrs but who was reared in Pilot Rock, south of Pendleton. She recalled those early days and the coming of Camp Fire Girls to Pilot Rock.
'There was little for youngsters to do in the little town of Pilot Rock,' she says. 'The town has grown and sprawled all over now but in those days, it was pretty small. So, we were pretty excited when the Camp Fire Girls was started there.' This was 1914 and Smith was 12.
'We hadn't heard of the Camp Fire Girls then and the Boy Scouts were unheard of, too, I believe. I think it must have been one of the very first clubs org in town.' Belonging to the Camp Fire Girls and the activities proved of long recall, although she is now 85, Smith says. Vern rented a little meat market.. it was such a hassle, after 2 yrs we moved to Milton Freewater & he worked in a meat market... salary $100 a mo: $25 on a car & $75 rent & whatever else besides paying on doctor bills... big change in our lives."

c1938 HISTORY: [1st yr high school] "June had a good voice, turned out for choir. Music teacher put her in accapella choir... went down to Penneys to look for material. Didn't have money that week but had 4 yards of red taffeta at 98 cents a yard layed away, until the next week. By that time I didn't have much time to get it done-didn't even have a pattern. I had made over so much of the girls & my clothes, I figured out a pattern & had it ready. Her teacher thought it so pretty, she had to model it at a style show in Home ec. I was told June was the best dressed girl in school. I was always thankful I was blessed to sew, as I never had to feel ashamed of my girls' clothes, even through our sickness & lack of money. I always canned fruit & vegetables, so we always had plenty to eat.
That summer, we moved 3 times before we finally got settled. Each time we moved a big old piano & range stove, which had to be plumbed each time & different stove pipe, not easy in those days."

1938-1939 RELIGION: OR,Umatilla Co-Milton-Freewater: "Vern, June & myself was baptized Feb 5, 1939, Milton Freewater Christian Church. ...we went to the house of Br Hiatt & there was confirmed a member of the Church. Br & Sr Vause said "Would you like to come to our place to eat?" They had a big kettle of chili beans, so went & ate with them, & that sure made a happy day for us... membership quite small, every one had 1-2 jobs...had a lot to learn & get used to, wasn't just a Sunday Church. The Welfare program: we all had to take part - sowing, planting gardens, & getting the vegetables canned, but that all seemed so important working together."

1941 HISTORY and BIRTH of child #1: WA-Walla Walla: Pam Hallmark Wagner, daughter: "June's parents bought a nice little home on Willow Street, where David and June lived for a short time after I was born in St Mary's Hospital 3 days after Pearl Harbor was bombed at the beginning of World War II. They had quite the time with me, as they tried different types of milk that would not settle well. Gram said she had to walk the floor with me sometimes and I would throw up clear across the room. Finally tried a brand of milk [goats?] that worked.
Dad worked for Standard Stations and was manager of the one on Alder Street in 1942. Mom and Dad moved into their own apartment on the second floor on Madison Street, then into a duplex on Hobson, which mother said was so cold, my little fingers were very cold.

1943 BIRTH of child #2: WA,WAlla Walla Co-Walla Walla: Dianna Dee was born on December 9, 1943, in St Mary's Hospital.

1944 HISTORY by daughter, Pam: WA,Walla Walla Co-Walla Walla: Dad and Mom bought a home on Division Street, right behind Green Park Grade School [the home has been moved up close to the "freeway" up on the hill. You can see it when you drive to Waitsburg or Dayton, on the old road to Spokane or to Lewiston, Idaho]. Mom and Dad had a huge garden in the back lot, with an apricot tree, pie cherry tree, and Transparent apple tree. Granddad Smith would come up on his lunch hour to visit, and he loved to eat a few apricots, which he probably was not supposed to do with his diabetes.
Dad went into the Navy and served in many places around the world. He was trained in radio work and was in the war until it was over August 1945. He said they occupied Japan, Philippines and the Marianna Islands after the end of the war. I remember him bringing us slippers, fans and other things from Japan. He was honorably released in January of 1946, and in 1947 he began work with the ground crew at United Air Lines.
Mother never worked outside the home but she worked very hard inside and outside of our home. She loved flowers and had many different kinds. She really loved the many different Iris, which were in the back yard along the back of the house. She was able to get an old trailer top moved into our back yard for a playhouse, where we spent many hours. She loved to wash clothes and hang them up on the line that dad built in the back yard. She thought they smelled so fresh and clean. She preferred that to using the dryer. She loved to serve in the church and was gone sometimes to Richland, where the Stake building was located."

1948 HISTORY: June and David Hallmark were sealed in Logan Temple by ElRay Christianson 20 April 1948: David & June, Pam & Dianna were sealed to them. 1950 BIRTH of child #4: WA,Walla Walla Co-Walla Walla: Michael David was born 12 October 1950, WW General Hospital, the first boy and quite a change for Mom. Mike was a good baby and a sweet little boy, and we [sister] loved taking care of him.

HISTORY by daughter, Pam: "June had a beautiful soprano voice and sang with the choir at church and would sing solos every once in awhile. We would love to hear her sing. She baked the most delicious pies, as did Gram and Jan [her mother and sister]. It's no wonder I love to make pies. She was just a plain great cook - could make a wonderful dinner out of nothing and would have the missionaries over very often. She canned fruit and vegetables and even meat for us to have some great meals. We would help her make applesauce or juice tomatoes or pop the ends off the string beans."

1955 BIRTH of child #5: WA,Walla Walla Co-Walla Walla: Steven James was born 30 April 1955, WW General Hospital, a few blocks from our home on Division.

1956 HISTORY by daughter, Pam: WA,Walla Walla Co-Walla Walla: Mel and Jan (mom's sister) Hankla moved into the big 2-story house next door to us on Division Street. Mel was having convulsions for an unknown epilepsy for a short time, and mother would be up very early making pies for a bakery down on Chestnut Street. She would take him to the Post Office many mornings. Dad built a gate on the fence between the homes and also an intercom [squawk box, dad says] between the homes. While living in this home, Dad built a mahogany stereo set, which we spent many hours listening to records, etc.
On April 28, 1956, Mom's dad was working on his Studebaker in the 2-story garage behind their home. Gram had tried calling him, but no answer. She was at Jan's working on baptismal pants and when the Bishop came to pick them up, she asked him is he would go down and check on him. He found him under the car, where the motor had fallen on him, killing him instantly. Mom and Dad were at a United Air Lines party and were called home, and I was in Richland for a State choir festival for junior high school age kids. Mother was due with Kristie and had a hard time dealing with his death. She did not allow us to go to his funeral, as she wanted us to remember him as he was when living. Mother quit baking pies for the bakery. Mom worked in Primary and with the young girls in MIA and loved doing so.
Mom and Dad bought a large 2-story home on Evergreen. Mom and Dad worked hard to make this a beautiful home, and it was. Dad built a covered patio behind the garage, where we spent many fun meals and had family over for picnics and play crochet, etc in our big fenced in back yard. Mom loved cooking in that big, wonderful kitchen and was always up making breakfast for us before Seminary. The younger kids went to Edison Elementary School, and Dianna and I went to Pioneer Junior High. For church, we were meeting in an old "chicken coop" on the other side of the railroad tracks west of town, while we were building a new church on Second Street. Mother was in charge of many dinners for the church, and she loved doing this. She and Vivian Gessel and Audra Ord were good friends and did many of these things together.

1956 BIRTH of child #6: WA,Walla Walla Co-Walla Walla: Kristie June Hallmark was born on Dianna's birthday, December 9, 1956, also in Walla Walla General Hospital.

1959-81 HISTORY by daughter, Pam: ID,Ada Co-Boise: Dad was transferred by United Air Lines to Boise and left 6 months before the family moved in August. Meanwhile, Mom was singing with the choir and with a sextet, singing for Church, other churches (Congregational), PTA, was chairman of the food for the Ward Bazaar, baking pies, involved with the cancer drive, etc. They first lived in a nice 2-story home on Harrison Boulevard, downtown, which was a beautiful street with an island down the middle, with street lamps [which Steve refinished years later for his Boy Scout Eagle project]. When the family moved, Pam stayed behind, living with Gram in an apartment in Jan and Mel's home, as she graduated from high school in 1960, was engaged to future husband, Bob Wagner and went to Whitman College for a time before they were married in 1962.
Mom missed her family and friends in Walla Walla, but she made many new friends in Boise. She missed her sister and mother and the many visits on the telephone, etc., but she began to develop friendships in Boise that were lasting friendships, too. But the family gravitated to Walla Walla on many occasions, like when the new chapel was dedicated, Dianna moved to live with Gram after I was married and she had graduated from high school. She met Les and before they were married, then Jill moved over to live with Gram and to work and meet her husband, Jim. All of us had our marriages or receptions at the home of Jan and Mel, who were so good to all of us.
From a program, Boise Stake MIA Music Fesitival "presents 'This is my Fathers' World' in N Jr Hi Auditorium 4-12-1960. June sang solo in Second Ward MIA chorus, "Swedish Slumber Time." Her beautiful voice was still recognized and her talent used.
In 1960 Mom and Dad bought a home on Ashland Drive, where they lived until1993, when they needed a one-floor home and less upkeep. They met in the chapel on Curtis, belonging to the 8th Ward, and where Mom began teaching Primary. Mom was called as the Primary President sometime in here, and did she love this calling. She was probably at every baseball game and event for the kids [both Mike and Steve played ball].
In 1963 Mom began a daycare in her home, and she loved the children who came to the home. It was sometimes hard on the family, but the children responded to Mom and loved her and would do sometimes better for her than when their parents would come after them and some slipped back into their habits at home. She was always doing for other people, taking them pies and fresh bread or other goodies. She enjoyed having the family there for the holidays and always had a feast of wonderful homey good food. She continued to can foods and to work on this home, making it a beautiful place and a welcome place. Dad worked hard, always making shelving, refinishing the downstairs area into a comfortable TV and game area, with bedrooms and a bath. I remember Mom coming to visit us in Portland and bringing us all kinds of canned and baked goodies, and I know she did with the others as well.
In 1965 Mom kept a calendar, as she had for many other years. It was amazing how many pies she baked, as well as other goodies - to take to her visiting teaching sisters, PTA carnival, BYU Education Week, Relief Society Bazaar, welfare banquet and for individuals. And of course, Mom canned and canned--many items purchased from growers, like peaches and pears, but a tremendous amount from her garden - tomatoes, tomato juice, pickles from her cucumbers, string beans-96 quarts in a month one year. She traveled by plane to see her kids, sometimes with Dad. She amazed me with how many things she had going in a single day, a single week - traveling to Walla Walla, to Portland to see us, people over for dinners, family like ourselves, coming for several days for a visit, sometimes one right after another, day care in her home, teaching Relief Society lessons, ironing [10 hours one day], going to church meetings, bowling.
During this time, Mom began to bowl and found that so enjoyable, while Dad loved golf and this was good for both of them. Mike was next to graduate and he went into the Navy in 1968. During the summer, we were living in Long Beach California, where Bob was working at the prison doing dental work in between his dental schooling. Mom and Dad flew down and brought the rest of the family, and had a wonderful vacation together, especially at the beach. When Bob graduated from dental school, Mike's ship was going to be in Portland for the Rose Parade time, so the family all came down and stayed with Bob & Pam and were able to see Mike and have him out, too, and then go through his ship. What fun we had all stuffed in that little house together. Later Mike became sick and was in a hospital in San Diego. Mom flew down and was with him for a time, to love and support him, and even got a helicopter flight over the Bay. Soon he was home and he married in 1970 to Kris Madison.
Also during this time, the new Cole Road Chapel was finished, Mom had surgery on her thyroid and had her birthmark removed. Steve graduated from high school, and before that, he did his big Eagle project I spoke of earlier - even had a write-up in the newspaper. Mom stopped her daycare and when Steve went on his Mission to Denmark, Mom began working with Louis [??] as a secretary and was with him for 14 years. During high school, both Kristie and Lorrie were on the Drill team and loved this action. Kristie married Mark Bleazard in April of 1975. Steve went to BYU and worked with Bob & Pam on their home during the summertime in Billings, Montana. He med Janalee and they were married in 1980, the same year that Dad retired from United Air Lines. Lorrie went to BYU, and she and Steve had a good time together there. She also met Kirt Naylor and they were married May 1981.

c1987 HISTORY: June began to work for Jim Perkins, Insurance agent sometime in here (5 yrs).

1990 REUNION: ID,Ada Co-Boise: The first of our Hallmark Family Reunions was held and created by Lorrie and Kristie, with a picnic, games and fun at a park in Boise, then back to Mom and Dad's for skits and more food. Many wonderful memories were created in the home on Ashland. And we all loved being together as family, and mom loved having us home and all together. Every 2 years the family has gotten together in Boise, with the second one back in Walla Walla to enjoy many of the memories of Mom and Dad over the years-seeing their homes and places of work, etc.

1991 HISTORY; 5 January-to SLC Temple for Mark before Mission day before. On Saturday, live session with Lisa & Les there as witnesses. Me-1st time for abt a yr or more. Went thru fine. Dad & I plan on going every Wed am. Stayed with Steve & Janalee while in SL. They went thru session also, & Bob & Pam. Had my oldest daug. on one side & youngest daug. on other side. Gave me confidence that I could do it. Made it mostly on my own. What a special day. Had a good time with L & K. Really enjoyed being with them.
ANNIVERSARY: ID,Ada Co-Boise: Mom and Dad celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and a grand open house was held at the home of Kirt and Lorrie. They had a wonderful time with many friends and all of the family there to help celebrate such a wonderful occasion.

1993 HOME: ID,Ada Co-Boise: Mom and Dad sold their home on Ashland and bought a one-level home on Cochees. It was a good move, as Mom was having some problems getting up and down the stairs with her legs, but she still continued to have a garden, which dad rototilled for her. The next year, Mom had bi-pass surgery on her heart, and they lived in and enjoyed this home, dad continuing to work on the yard and trees and up on the roof. Concern began to grow over Mom and a few problems that developed. A nice apartment complex was found where they could have their meals prepared and Dad wouldn't have to worry about house maintenance.

1995 HISTORY: Mom's calendar: Dr Holbrook-several appointments; 28 June, Mom wrote home from hospital, then Dr Smith appts.

1996 HISTORY: Mom's calendar: 12-24 went to L & K for traditional Christmas Eve dinner. 12-25 didn't do much. Dad worked on roof all day checking leak-didn't go to Jill's for Christmas dinner because of that.

HISTORY: From card by Elaine Bess-no date: "Dear June, I met one of your lovely daughters in Albertsons the other day... in reply to my question, 'How's your Mom,' I heard of your 5-by pass surgery... you've certainly had your share the past few years, but if I remember you -- your faith and happy personality, will bless you to triumph -- no matter what. Our paths may cross, now that you are in our stake -- meanwhile know that our prayers are in your behalf -- and I'm glad we are sisters in Zion.

1997 HISTORY: Mom's calendar: 1-2-Dr Asher told me I had a mini-stroke; 1-15: Had a mini-sstroke1-16: to emergency & Dr Holbrook's office. 1-17 Lorrie came over & challenged Dad to cook once a week. Making bread right now. Dad made sandwich for our lunch.1-19 Not go to church, legs not working very good. 1-27 Dad & I got a haircut from Kristie here.
2-13 Mike called and Keri's baby Whitney died this morning. 2-17 Keri and Brian's baby's gravesite funeral was today. Little Whitney looked like a doll laying there. At least she won't have to go through all the things that the rest of us go through. She will be in the Celestial Kingdom. Was really cold and windy. Didn't go to the luncheon. Came right home. I was freezing cold and was shaking.
3-7 Kirt had appendix and gall bladder out... after 4pm. 3-8 went to hospital to see Kirt. Seemed real good... appendix had ruptured.
7-12 Keri and Brian went to temple for own endowments and sealed baby to them.
