      1832 HIST: Oct 2003 letter from Joyce to Pam Wagner pg 9: "Black Hawk War 1832 Sauk & Fox Indian Uprising: Robert M. Johnston and William Robert Johnson, with all the New Salem men. Led by Abraham Lincoln."

      1833 HIST: Oct 2003 letter from Joyce to Pam Wagner pg 9: "Robert M. Johnston (the wheelwright) moved to New Salem, Illinois about 1833. The little community tried to survive on commerce from the Sangamon River. [Abt 1932, local people near the ruins of New Salem began to realize what historical
      significaance the little community held because Abe Lincoln lived there in his youth, and started his political career in that very little village. With state and federal help, they used some of Abe Lincoln's actual surveying records, and rebuilt the log cabins of the local residents who had left some 100 yrs prior to the renovation. Old records were ressurrected.] Robert M. Johnston was a Whi who voted, always, for Henry Clay, Abraham Lincoln, and that platform of government, which favored commerce, and building national waterways and highways. When the river dried up, and no ships were passing by, there was no money. For several years, the local people lived by the barter system. Many bills were owed to Robert M Johnston, and in turn he owed the storekeeper money. He sued and couldn't collect; the storekeeper sued and couldn't collect. All these records are on file in the "New Salem Frontier Town", Petersburg, IL"
