13 Mar 1844-5 James B McAllister born on Bush Prairie, first white child born on Puget Sound
- [S336] Obituary: Washington, Thurston Co, Morning Olympian, pg 112.
James McAllister who was the first white child born north of the Columbia River in the then territory of Oregon, was buried yesterday afternoon in Masonic Cemeter a few miles from place where he was born.
Mr McAllister was born on Bush prairie in 1846, not a great while after Michael T Simmons piloted the first little band of settlers from Vancouver to the DesChutes falls, & there founded Tumwater, the pioneer settlement of the State of WA. Mr & Mrs James McAllister were prominent members of that little colony who have nearly all passed to the great beyond. The elder McAllister was killed in Indian War 1855. He was first lieutenant of company of Puget Sound Rangers, of which Charles Eaton was captain, and was shot down from ambush at White River while endeavoring to communicate with hostile Indians as peace commissioner from the whites. McAllister volunteered for the perilous duty on account of his ability to converse fluently in the Indian language.
At that time the McAllisters were living on a place which they had taken up near where Sherlock now stands. It might be worth noting that McAllister Creek & the famous McAllister springs with their wonderfully clear waters were named after the elder McAllister.
When the news of the terrible death of Lt McAllister reached the little band of settlers about Thurston county, together with the information that another Whitman massacre might occur, the families hurried to the forts and with them the man who was buried yesterday, then a lad scarcely able to hold up a gun, yet ready to defend his mother when the redskins came. In such times as these, James McAllister was reared & lived in the country until age 18 when he went to Oregon. In 1870 he went back to Kentucky & married Miss Belle McAllister & remained in that state several years. 1882 found him again in WA Territory.
This time he located in Grays Harbor country on North River. Of recent years he has been living in North Yakima & had been in Orting where he died, abt 2 wks. Death caused by paralytic stroke. 4 children survive: James McAllister, Mrs Albert Erickson or Orting, Mrs George Woods of Loomis & Miss Sarah McAllister. A bro & 5 sis also living: John Y McAllister of North Yakima, Mrs MA Cheney, Mrs J E Wood of LA, Mrs SA Hartman of Woodland, Mrs LC Wiggins of Sherlock, & Mrs Isaak Hawk.
The remains arrived from Orting on yesterday's train & the funeral was in Dobbins at Wright's undertaking parlors at 2:00. Rev Dr Glass conducted at the parlor & the grave. He was buried at the Masonic cemetery. It is said to have been his wishes that after all the years of wandering he should like to be buried near where he was born
