John Henry LePage, 80, of Jefferson City, passed away Sat, Aug 1, 2009. He left this humble world & all who loved him to join his heavenly Father & all his family & friends who have traveled the universe before him.
John was the oldest child of the late Henry and Elora (Wagner) LePage. John grew up in Jefferson City, MO & attended a 1-room school house-Mt Hope, before graduating from Jeff City High School. He married Dorothy Lee Rackers on Sep 3, 1950 & together they had 7 children.
John spent his early years on the family farm & did everything he could to sustain that lifestyle. Hard economic times forced him to look to the city for employment. He worked as a carpenter, truck driver, state conservation agent & highway weight inspector before finding his true calling. John joined the KC Police Dept in 1961, where he enjoyed a long & colorful career. He began work as a patrol officer, was promoted to Sergeant Detective & worked in vice, homicide, burglary & forgery. It was not uncommon for John to work 3 different jobs on any given day. Including the police dept, John painted houses, directed traffic for Sears & Roebuck, & worked security for Safeway, the Bannister Mall & the American Royal in KC. He sacrificed his free time to provide his kids with a good life. John didn't see the extra jobs as work because he loved what he did. He was a great detective & the people of KC should be grateful for his dedication to solving crime & his service to the community. John's detective skills served him well during retirement. His case became the Henry Fam History. John spent the last 15 years researching; tracking down every bit of information available to preserve this lost history for present & future generations. He has compiled over 700 pages of information & photos & along the way found long lost relatives & new friends from across America & Europe. John's other passions in life included his love of draft horses, farming, mowing hay, traveling the country delivering cars, going to the rodeo & spending time with his family & friends.
John was known to be very generous, giving to a mutitude of charities & always helping others in need, while never affording himself any luxuries. John always remembered others on special occasions by sending very touching cards with gifts. John had an incredible memory & sense of humor. He always had a new joke & would always get into the character when telling them. John's stories were always wonderfully wild & funny.
Despite many years of poor health, John lived a long & full life. John was a devout Catholic & his funeral Mass will be in the same church he was married in. John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Elora; his wife, Dorothy; & his 2 sisters, Elora (Sissy) Borgmeyer & Emily LePage. He is survived by his children & their spouses: Paul A & Louise of Belton, Joseph H & Jennifer of Georgetown TX, Charles C & Jan of Raymore, Stephen D & Cindy of Taos, George R & Karen of Independence, Fredrick M & Kori of Gardner KS, & Emily A & Jeff Cuba of Ponder TX; his 4 brothers, Paul W of Jefferson City, Thomas E of Russellville, Julian E of Warroad MN & David D of Jefferson City. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren & 8 gr grandchildren.
The family would like to express their sincere graatitude to John's dear friend, Ms. Pat Wood for her many years of loved, dedication, comfort & support. We are especially thankful for the house she spent by his side during his final days. "Gone Home" Friends will be received from 4-8pm, Fri, Aug 7, 2009 at the Houser-Millard Funeral Homer, whre a prayer service will be held at 3:30pm.
