- He emigrated abt 1660 from the Province of Guelderland, in which there is a village of Hart; he or his ancestors were probably French and his will was partly written in that language. He settled in New York city where he became a merchant & a shipper.& died in 1671. He had two natural sons, Matthias the ancestor of the Elizabeth, New jersey branch, and Daniel, the ancestor of the Staten Island branch. He never married, but was engaged to Margaret Stuyvesant Backer at the time of his death & apparently was intimately involved at the time, producing a son with her.
He had three Brothers: Daniel, Matthias, & Jacob. After Balthazars death his brother Daniel succeeded to his business & died without issue. His brother Jacob married Cornelia Beeck,They 5 Children; William, Peter, Elizabeth, Balthus, 1673-80 7 another,1684, not named. Matthias married in 1670, Jannetie, the widow of Joannes De Witt, a wealthy flour-merchant of New York, they had a dau. Catalina,bap. 21 Jan 1673. He had died in 1675.
