An estimated 300, but only a few named: ...Solomon Eades...an officer and posse were sent from Platte and with kindness, were required to leave...several of their cabins were burned...
Nov 2002 email from Connie Clappier to Pam Wagner re Laura Irene Francis-Austin TX: Hist of Platte Co MO: "In 1836 several families resided in Platte Co (considered Indian lands). Gov't authorities issued a preemptory for them to move & abandon their claims, farms, houses, everything; & the troops at Ft Levenworth followed up the order by expelling those who were not prompt to go. At that time about 20 families composed the settlement, including Solomon Eads. Three of the settler's houses were burned by the soldiers-those of Robert Asher, Charles Cook & Solomon Eads. The treatment these pioneers received was considered an outrage, especially when in less than a year afterwards the country was opened up for settlement."

2. HIST Of EADS, by Rev Geo R Eads, 1945 - some not seem too accurate:
Mvd frm KY, to IA, to MO where met, md Susannah, had 13 children. 1932-44 in early spring, Solomon and Moses left MO with families, crossed plains & Rockies for 6 months with ox teams, herds of cattle. Susannah had TB, traveled slowly, recovered & strong by completion. Forded streams, crossed large rivers in wagon boxes (air tight), attacked by Indians twice but beat them off. Near Grande Rounde River Valley, OR, George R Eads says he can see logging chain marks where snubbed wagons on steep hill down to ford river.
Dec 1844, in The Dalles OR, where Solomon Cave Eads born. Couldn't go further because of the snow in Cascades. Rafted downriver and herded cattle on back till at Oregon City (small village of dozen homes)
1845 took up donation land claims of 640 acres at junction of Yamhill River and Mill Creek, 3 miles from Sheridan.
1849 gold drew Solomon and sons Henry and Jackson to Feather River, California but Mountain Fever got to Solomon and Henry, so couldn't work. Jackson only 15 but washed gold $15-20/day. When winter came returned to Oregon to stay.
Solomon & Susannah died at Sheridan, leaving Ennes and Catherine, who lived with sis Sarah Eads Burden.

NOTES: Oct 1954 letter from Elsie Johnson Hosmer to Mary Marks: "There is a girl living here [Eugene] by the name of Dorothy Kathleen Eads... She is from Kentucky and didn't recognize anything that might connect the families. But she is only starting to hunt up history for their family. She is working at the University... She said before her grandfather died, they spelled it Eades but dropped the last E and in that book I have, the names were spelled with 2 E's. Here are the names from that book [assuming it is the "History of the Eads Family" by Rev George R Eads] Soloman, Abraham, Henry, John and Clark Eades. So it looks as tho they formaly spelled it that way too. She looked at Grandma's picture and said she looked quite a bit like her father...said her people were Baptists but that they hadn't found any link with James Buchanon Eads."
