Documents | John Albert Scorup 1872 - 1954 OBITUARY: Daily Herald, Wed. Oct. 17, 1959 PROMINENT CATTLEMAN DIES IN MOAB J. Albert Scorup, 87, father of Mrs. Harve Williams of Provo and Mrs. C. Wilson Larsen of Orem, died Monday at the D. W. Allen Hospital in Moab. He was born Sept. 29, 1872 at Ephriam to Christian C and Karen H. Scorup. One of Utah's most prominent cattlemen, he operated one of the states largest ranches located in San Juan and Grand counties. He married Emma Theodora Bayles Jan. 2, 1895 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died Jan. 20, 1935. He married Laura Wilson Shupe in 1935 at Moab. The Scorups moved from Bluff to Provo in 1917 where they resided in the family home at 237 East Center. Their six daughters graduated from BYU during their residence in Provo until 1930. Mr. Scroup was a High Priest in the Provo Fifth LDS Ward. Active in business and civic affairs in Southern Utah, He was instrumental in getting water and telephone service to residences in Bluff and Blanding. He helped to organize the first bank in Blanding. He was a charter member of the Utah Cattle and Horse Growers Association and served as county commissioner of San Juan County for four years. He was the President Manager of the Scorup-Somerville Cattle Co., President of the National Bank of Moab, and Vice President of the First State Bank of Salina. In 1955 he was awarded the bronze plaque designating him as Utah's Outstanding Rancher, Live-stockman and Community Leader. Surviving is his wife Laura Shupe Scorup, Six daughters: Mrs C. Wilford (Edna) Larsen of Orem, Mrs. Harve (Veda) Williams of Provo, Mrs. Francis J. (Laverde) Gurney of Salina, Mrs. Rulon (Alberta) Fairbourn of Salina, Mrs. Clarence T. (Juliette) Ward of Boise, Idaho, Mrs. Orville L. (Caroline Polly) of Long Beach, Calif. Two step-sons, Wade Shupe and Ike Shupe, Moab, Two sisters, Mrs. J. O. Anderson and Mrs. Jesse Thornell both of Salina. Thirty grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday in the Moab LDS Chapel. Graveside services will be held before burial in the Provo City Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. Friday. |
