- Christopher Columbus Greer was born on 4 March 1832 in that portion of the Cherokee land in Alabama that would soon become Chambers County. His school years were spent in Washington County, Texas and he came of age in Port Sullivan, Milam County, Texas. It is likely that, when he was not working at his father's sawmill, he helped defend his community from hostile Indians as a volunteer in the militia service that came to be known as the Texas Rangers. Some researchers have suggested that he married Virginia Wilkins, but this is unsubstantiated. It was in Milam County that he died, apparently childless, on 8 February 1854 of pneumonia contracted while deer hunting a week earlier. He was buried along the banks of Little River.
