HISTORY OF HOUSTON COUNTY, by A.A. Aldrich, located in Austin-State Archives of Texas:
PP 7-8: Signers of petition for county of Houston, Texas: (see additional page for narrative) John Hallmark, James M. Hallmark, Alfred M. Hallmark, George W. Hallmark, John B Hallmark, George Hallmark, Thomas Garner, George Hallmark.
PP 18: "On June 22, 1839 AT Hallmark was constable for some unnamed precinct in Houston County." "On February 13 1841, George Hallmark and W. Hallmark were commissioned justices of the peace for Beat #2 of Houston Co, having been elected on November 14, 1840."
PP 20: "On February 3, 1845, George Hallmark, Sr., was elected justice of the peace Precinct #2, and commissioned February 27, 1845."
PP 79: "The Creek Community...citizens: William C Hallmark (Billy), S.B. Hallmark (Steve). Creek School house destroyed by fire after merging with Austonio School."
PP 158: "The progenitor of the Hallmark family in Houston County was George Hallmark, who lived on Mustang Prarie, and for whom a small creek is named. He was a prominent man in his day and accumulated a large estate during his lifetime. He made his will on August 16, 1848, which was provided in the County Court on October 25, 1852, and same was recorded in Book I of the deed
records of Houston Co, TX. His estate was appraised at $17,000.
In this will he bequeathed to his three youngest sons, Richard M Hallmark, Ephraim L.B. Hallmark, and Alexander C Hallmark, 3 negroes named Solom, Charity and Little Tom, stating that Little Tom was the youngest Negro he owned, and provided in said will that said Negroes should work for the use, benefit and support of said three children until they shall be of age; or the youngest one marries, at which time they shall be equally divided among them. Just how this could be accomplished, the will does not undertake to provide. The rest of his estate is equally bequeathed to his children, Polly Box, William C, George W, Lee Anna Rosser, John B, James M, Alfred H, Aveline Stedham, Matthew DT,
together with Stillwell Box's 6 children, who out of their part shall put in $640, which if they do, would be entitled to an equal part of the property, together with seven Negroes: Peggy, Big Tom, Harriett, Charles, Simion, Elizabeth, and July. This same George in 1843 was postmaster at Mustang
Prarie.
