1900[?] HISTORY: Illustrated Sketch Book and Directory of Jefferson City and Cole County, page 351: "George W Walther, dealer in furniture and undertker, 106 West High Street, Jefferson City, is a son of Squire Albert Walther, a native of Bavaria, Germany, who immigrated to America in 1839 and settled on farm in Cole County, from which place he removed to Jefferson City in 1866. Here he engaged in the grocery business two years, when he disposted of his interest and returned to his farm, where he died April 15, 1879.
The subject of this sketch was born on the farm, eight miles east of Jefferson City, February 8, 1853. His early education was in the neighboring schools. Coming with his father to Jefferson City, in 1866, he finished his eduation in the public schools of this city. Except for the few years his father lived in Jefferson City, he was continuously with him on the farm until twenty-seven years of age, a good portion of the time managing the business, and was successful in growing wheat and potatoes, and also in raising stock.
In 1880 he purchased the old homestead, which he continuted to run successfully until August, 1895, when he removed to Jefferson City, and engaged in his present business, which he has continued ever since. He was united in marriage October 27, 1881, to Miss Louise, daughter of Fred Guenther, a prominant farmer of Morgan County, Mo. To this union has been born one child, a daughter, Hilda Elizabeth, who is now at home. In the fall of 1894 Mr Walther was the nominee of the Republican party for the office of Collector of Cole County but defeated, but he was defeated by Thomas Mahan, the Democratic nominee, by a small majority. He is a member of Evangelical Central church, of the IOOF, and brotherhood of Elks, a most worthy citizen, who is highly esteemed by all who knew him intimately."

HISTORY OF COLE (ETC) COUNTIES, Goodspeed, p 207: "Aztec or Indian mounds - collection which have excited the greatest interest on farm of late Albert Walther, just east of Moreau, near where it empties into the Missouri...statement made after confirmed by George Walther now living on father's place.

NOTES: from trip to Jeff City by Bob and Pam Wagner in 1989-George W. Walther a brother to Theresia Catherine Walther, he had a furniture store not far from court house. He was an undertaker at 106 High Street, Walter-Wymore, partner Frank Wymore, George was Senior member.

Among the prominent and energetic business men of Sullivan Co, PA, is the gentlemen named above and whose portrait appears on the opposite page, who is recognized as one of the leading merchants of Sonestown, where he owns a large general store. In 1885 he returned to Sonestown and again engaged with Mr. Armstrong, with whom he remained about 2 yrs. He then went to work for Bodine & Warn in Sonestorn and for 9 yrs acted as manager of their store. At the expiration of that time he bought out the firm; he also purchased the 2-story building , in which the store was located, which was built in 1876 by Robert Whitaker. Mr Buck immediately increased the stock, and now carries a complete line of dry goods, groceries, boots and shoes, gents' furnishings, hardware, paints and oils, and all kinds of farming implements; his store is now one of the most complete general stores in the county, and by his honest and straightforward dealings he has built up a large and enviable patronage. He is enterprising and public-spirited, and enjoys the respect and good will of a large circle of acquaintances.
Mr Buck was joined in bonds of matrimony with Jennie Gavitt, a daughter of Peter Gavitt of LaPorte twp, Sullivan Co PA, and they are the parents of 5 children, namely: Lela, Vera, Mildred, Staunton G, who died at the age of 7 months; and Grant. "ALBERT F. MICHAEL --The career of our subject presents one round of industry and activity that bespeak an energy & wisdom far above the ordinary, & places him among the leading business men in this part of the west; coupled with this he has a reputation for uprightness that his every day life demonstrates is fully merited has been instrumental in placing him in the center of the large circle of admiring friends.
He first saw the light in the Keystone state (PA), Columbia Co on Feb 8, 1854, where his father, Andrew Michael, was an operator of canal boats on two of the principal canals of the state. He remained with his father until 1877, acquiring a good education and such a practical training as afterward made him the successful man that he has been.
In 1880 he came to Mitchell Co KS, bought a farm of 160 acres, where he lived for 2 yrs, then selling out went to Norton Co, the same state, & took up a homestead, staying upon it for 2 yrs. During that time he was occupied with contract work on the grade of B & M RR in Nebraska, & later was superintendant of construction on the UP in KS. In the winter of 1882 he went to Nebraska, & took contract work on the Missouri Pacific, & the next year found him operating on the Oregon Short Line in Idaho.
In the fall of 1883 he first came to Umatilla Co as operator on construction of the OR & NRR, & the spring following in Portland & was solicited to take full charge of the grading of the Northern Pacific to Kalama. After this was successfully accomplished he went to WA & pursued his vocation on the NP in that state. After this he came to Pendleton, put in a switch from the main line of OR & N to Byers' Mill.
April 1 of 1885, he moved to Pilot Rock, & engaged in farming & stock raising, where he was very successful. It was 1891 that he bought the place where he now resides, 227 acres. In addition to this, he owns half a section adjacent to Pilot Rock, which is all first class wheat land is all under cultivation.
On Feb 11, 1875, he was married to Miss Mary E Reynolds, whose father was a gen.merchant in Sullivan Co PA, where their marriage occurred. To this union the following children have been born: Lillie May bn May 20 1877; Ellery E., bn Nov 12 1879; Ella R, bn June 1 1882; Charles A, bn Dec 28 1886; Sadie E, bn Apr 17 1887; Bessie, bn Aug 17 1888; John W, bn Oct 12 1891; Roy M, bn Mar 17 1893; Nora B, bn Aug 31 1894; Josie M, bn Apr 9 1896; Ivy M, bn Nov 26 1897."

The butcher shop was operated by Fred Bailey..had an ice-house in back with double walls filled with sawdust. Ice was cut in winter and stored there during summer months. One of his employees was Charlie Kidwell, an emigrant from MO who later married Nora Michaels. Bailey sold the shop to Frank Michaels. Then later Elvin Pollock purchased it."
Pg 308: "Mr and Mrs Albert Frank Michael came to Umatilla Co in fall of 1883. He was a construction operator for OR & NR RR, but it was not until 1885 that they moved to Pilot Rock and entered into farming and livestock raising. In 1891 he bought 227 acres on Little McKay Creek where they settled, and the younger members of the family were born on this place. He expanded the ranch to a total of 860 acres. In addition to this, he owned a half section of land adjacent to Pilot Rock.
He was born in 1854 in Berwick PA. He received a good eduction in this community. In 1880 he came west to Kansas and farmed, but he finally turned to railroad construction and kept moving west until he arrived in Oregon.
He md Miss Mary E Reynolds of PA in 1875. They reared a family consisting of: Lilli May, Ellery, Ella, Eva, Charles, Sadie, Bessie, Frank, John, Roy, Nora, Josephine and Iva. Later his son-in-law Elvin Pollock joined him in the business. This shop faced Main Street next to East Birch Creek on the spot where the present post office stands (1980s)."

HISTORY: Directory of Jefferson City and Cole Co, pg 375: "...Few men in Central Missouri are better known or more popular than Wm. W Wagner, the genial proprietor of the Monroe House of Jefferson City. He has not only managed his hotel business with marked finanacial success, but has other important interests in most of which he was influenced to become identified, not altogether on account of their substantial character and promising of dividents, but largely to assist the material progress of the city. Of enterprises of this class, he is a stockholder and director in the Jefferson City Water Works Co., the Bridge and Transit Co, the Jefferson City Light, Heat and Power Co, of the latter of which he is president. He is also largely interested in mining properties in the souther part of the county, property which promises on development to be immensely valuable. Mr Wagner is a Knight Templar, a member of the IOOF, Elks, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen of America and in all of these exalted and elevating orders is a worthy representative. He demonstrated his loyalty to Jefferson City by a very active opposition to the Capital removal, and was a strong advocate and assisted greatly in securing for Cole Co its magnificent court house. All of Mr Wagner's efforts have been attended with financial sucess, the result of the prompt and active exercise of his good judgemenmt."
