George Gavitt manufactured household furniture and burian casketts. His rooms were on Main Street near what is now O D Hall's Bakery. Pg 309: Furniture - The Furniture trad was established in Westerly by George Gavitt in 1798. He was a native of the town. His shop was on the site now occupied by O D Hall's Bakery. He was succeeded in business by George W Gavitt about 1830 and he continuted trading until about 1850, at which time the business was moved to the other side of the river near the end of the bridge. Mr. Gavitt was succeeded by Clarke & Denison... followed by Clark & Hazard in 1853; Stanton Hazard 1860-68, 1872 by H. B. Gavitt & Co, who conducted it until 1878 when P B Gavitt, the present owner took entire charge. The new building was erected in 1883. He had been there about two years previously, engaged in salt-making. Mr. Thorla was a man of good general information, and by profession a surveyor. 1819 HISTORY: "...He was one of the early Justices of the Peace and served also as Co Surveyor of Morgan Co. Silas and Dennis Gibbs were the first Justices of the Peace in Olive Twp, commissioned 18 Aug 1819. Silas and Robert McKee were among the first settlers in Olive and Noble County. They had a store in Olive, drilled for salt water and made salt to sell. Robert McKee married Ruth Thorla, Silas's sister [dau? to ck out]. 1820 CENSUS: OH,Morgan Co-Olive Twp: 1821 WILL: OH,Morgan Co: Proven 17 July 1821.
