June 1992: June Smith Hallmark: Grandad drank a lot. Even after he joined the church he thought a cold bottle of beer sounded good. He had diabetes and knew he shouldn't have been drinking, but he drank until he joined the church. The drinking made him difficult to live with at times. I remember Gram having a pot of coffee on the stove, in an old green teapot. Loved tea, hot or cold. Dad had shingles and walked the floor with the pain. Diabetes caused him some problems, especially when he went to the hospital - had a bad hot water bottle burn on his leg, took a long time to heal."

We speak of Grace Smith, 305 Ash St, who has lived in the valley for nearly 40 yrs but who was reared in Pilot Rock, south of Pendleton. She recalled those early days and the coming of Camp Fire Girls to Pilot Rock.
'There was little for youngsters to do in the little town of Pilot Rock,' she says. 'The town has grown and sprawled all over now but in those days, it was pretty small. So, we were pretty excited when the Camp Fire Girls was started there.' This was 1914 and Smith was 12.
'We hadn't heard of the Camp Fire Girls then and the Boy Scouts were unheard of, too, I believe. I think it must have been one of the very first clubs org in town.' Belonging to the Camp Fire Girls and the activities proved of long recall, although she is now 85, Smith says. Didn't have money that week but had 4 yards of red taffeta at 98 cents a yard layed away, until the next week. By that time I didn't have much time to get it done-didn't even have a pattern. I had made over so much of the girls & my clothes, I figured out a pattern & had it ready. Her teacher thought it so pretty, she had to model it at a style show in Home ec. I was told June was the best dressed girl in school. I was always thankful I was blessed to sew, as I never had to feel ashamed of my girls' clothes, even through our sickness & lack of money. I always canned fruit & vegetables, so we always had plenty to eat.
That summer, we moved 3 times before we finally got settled. Each time we moved a big old piano & range stove, which had to be plumbed each time & different stove pipe, not easy in those days."

Mar 1895: Gen Affidavit by Francis E Barron 30 Mar 1895, 52 yrs old of Compton,LA, CA. "Albert J Smith in same Co & Reg, occupied same cabin during winter 1864-1865 near Winchester to White House landing. In spring of 1865 I remember AJ had very hard cold (Christmas it affected his throat & lungs, causing a cough) & before it was over we started march to White House. 2 Mar rained very hard, wetting our blankets thru & running under our bed. Cold, frost not out of ground. Did not get clothes or blankets dry 3-4 days. Took more cold, causing "catarrh". Not over it when landed at White House 26 Mar 1865: detailed as regular pioneers, built cabins for officers before building own. Still in little tents at Christmas 1864.
Apr 1895: Geo E Baldwin, Napa CA-knew Albert J Smith. He very ill from severe cold contracted while at Camp Russell near Winchester VA Dec 1864. I was Sgt in his CO. Not to have any camp fires. We all quite ill from exposure. He very sick & had lung trouble from that time. Rec'd marching orders Feb 1865. All who had poor horses or were sick to be sent to Harpers Ferry, the rest to Richmond. Many of us ill, but we determined not to be left behind. Albert J was one of them. Traveled thru rain & mud to White House landing. Had a bed quilt tied under rubber poncho, around head & throat. No doubt his early death soon after the war was due to cold & exposure we went thru those days.
Mar 1894: Edward D Bruner: Knew him well. At time of enlistment sound & robust man. After exposure during winter 1863 & 1864 really sick. He was a good soldier & always performed his duty when able. We came from CA tog & he in good health.

Mrs Princess E Smith lived in this neighborhood after Smith's death and until she died on the farm of her brother, Columbus Thurlo. She lived at the time with her son Marcus M Smith... never remarried..."
Descendants of John and Abigail Thurlo: "Princess lived most of her life in and around Sullivan County, and was affectionately called Aunt 'Pink' by all the children, whether related or not, and by her old brother Columbus, who probably started the nickname by teasing her when they were growing up. Princess, being skilled in the use of a needle, supported and raised her family by being not just a seamstress but tailor as well. Her customers included men wanting her suits as often as women wanting her dresses."

"ALBERT F. MICHAEL --The career of our subject presents one round of industry and activity that bespeak an energy & wisdom far above the ordinary, & places him among the leading business men in this part of the west; coupled with this he has a reputation for uprightness that his every day life demonstrates is fully merited has been instrumental in placing him in the center of the large circle of admiring friends.
He first saw the light in the Keystone state (PA), Columbia Co on Feb 8, 1854, where his father, Andrew Michael, was an operator of canal boats on two of the principal canals of the state. He remained with his father until 1877, acquiring a good education and such a practical training as afterward made him the successful man that he has been.
In 1880 he came to Mitchell Co KS, bought a farm of 160 acres, where he lived for 2 yrs, then selling out went to Norton Co, the same state, & took up a homestead, staying upon it for 2 yrs. During that time he was occupied with contract work on the grade of B & M RR in Nebraska, & later was superintendant of construction on the UP in KS. In the winter of 1882 he went to Nebraska, & took contract work on the Missouri Pacific, & the next year found him operating on the Oregon Short Line in Idaho.
In the fall of 1883 he first came to Umatilla Co as operator on construction of the OR & NRR, & the spring following in Portland & was solicited to take full charge of the grading of the Northern Pacific to Kalama. After this was successfully accomplished he went to WA & pursued his vocation on the NP in that state. After this he came to Pendleton, put in a switch from the main line of OR & N to Byers' Mill.
April 1 of 1885, he moved to Pilot Rock, & engaged in farming & stock raising, where he was very successful. It was 1891 that he bought the place where he now resides, 227 acres. In addition to this, he owns half a section adjacent to Pilot Rock, which is all first class wheat land is all under cultivation.
On Feb 11, 1875, he was married to Miss Mary E Reynolds, whose father was a gen.merchant in Sullivan Co PA, where their marriage occurred. To this union the following children have been born: Lillie May bn May 20 1877; Ellery E., bn Nov 12 1879; Ella R, bn June 1 1882; Charles A, bn Dec 28 1886; Sadie E, bn Apr 17 1887; Bessie, bn Aug 17 1888; John W, bn Oct 12 1891; Roy M, bn Mar 17 1893; Nora B, bn Aug 31 1894; Josie M, bn Apr 9 1896; Ivy M, bn Nov 26 1897."

1862-1962 HIST: "In The Footsteps of the Pioneers, 1862-1962," by Will M Kidwell, Ed.D., Pg 242: "During this decade the butcher shop was located on the NE side of East Birch Creek on Main Street, chich the city maps call "Willow." The butcher shop was operated by Fred Bailey..had an ice-house in back with double walls filled with sawdust. Ice was cut in winter and stored there during summer months. One of his employees was Charlie Kidwell, an emigrant from MO who later married Nora Michaels. Bailey sold the shop to Frank Michaels. Then later Elvin Pollock purchased it."
Pg 308: "Mr and Mrs Albert Frank Michael came to Umatilla Co in fall of 1883. He was a construction operator for OR & NR RR, but it was not until 1885 that they moved to Pilot Rock and entered into farming and livestock raising. We were partners for several years as near as I can recollect from 1874 to 1880 in blacksmith business in Oregon. The above facts are of my own knowledge. I also know of his enlistment in 3rd Batt of NJ Lt Artillery-& once during his service he came home on furlough to visit me. It most likely was circular in design. It had no roof. The stockade was built by the residents of PR under the direction of Julius Wegner (blacksmith), AJ Sturtevan (Gen store operator)... During the day everyone stayed outside and cooked under the shade trees. There were portholes in the stockade, and men with rifles were stationed at each."
