    "Mose and Jim Johnson lived in or near the vicinity of California Gulch. They came and settled there some time before 1878. Either one or both were married, since Mrs Douglas Belts, writing in the "Reminiscences of Oregon Pioneers," stated tat she went to Harmony School, and two of her classmates were Lydia Johnson and Anna Johnson. Mrs Mary Ramsdell in the "Reminiscences" told that 'After getting home, we got the second word about the Inidans; Mose and Jim Johnson coming on a dead run to warn us.
    The Indians were coming from the Grande Ronde, they said, so we started for Pilot Rock, Mose and Jim riding along on either side of us."

They won prizes in rodeos in bronc-riding, bareback riding and relays. They operated cattle ranches in the Robert and Mud Lake areas, Jefferson Co, Idaho for some 40 yrs."

I know that 1-2 of them were in the San Francisco earthquake. I found 2 of them (I believe) in old marriage records the last time I was in Salt Lake City. I sent for copies of the marriage licenses and believe they are the correct people."

We do know that he lived in New Salem and was very well acquainted with the great Abraham Lincoln, worshipped him, and spoke of their friendship all his life.

When news came to the young couple, William determined to go to California to investigate the possibilities of moving his family to the Gold Fields... he traveled 16,000 nautical miles around the tip of South America, stayed almost 6 months, then returned by the same route. The trip took almost 2 years.

Elizabeth told her dau-in-law, Sarah Mabel (Kitty) Johnson, that the trip was very hard, and they had to guard against hostile Indians and renegade whites all the way. They stopped at old Ft Hall on the Snake River, in Idaho to rest the stock, and rejuvenate for the hard last leg of the trip to California..."

    c1898-99 HIST continued: "...Abt 1898, they made a trip back to Oregon and Idaho to visit their children and grandchildren. While visiting son Mose and family on a remote ranch on the Little Lost River, Butte Co ID, William became very ill and died. He is buried there on the trail. Elizabeth knit her beloved husband of 52 years some bootees to keep his cold, cold feet warm. The Idaho Historial Society recognized it as a Historical site, fenced it about 1965. Elizabeth went to live with Amy Wegner in Cheney WA, died 27 May 1906."

    HIST continued: "Her grandfather, Jacob Thorp and Pheobe Thorp & their 9 sons settled the town of Pekin, Tazewell Co, Illinois. Elizabeth's father, Andrew Thorp was the oldest son of Jacob and Phoebe Thorp. Both Jacob and Andrew were bn in New Providence, Morris Co, NJ. The first Jacobof this family who emigrated to America was born in no. England 17 Dec 1744. He died in PA 20 July 1793. Thorp/Tharp is very well known in Lincolnshire and York, England.
    Elizabeth's mother's family (Truitt) were N English or Scottish. The Truitts were among the first families in America, settling in Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. George Truitt I, was Governor of Delaware from 1808-1811. He emigrated from Somerset Co MD. His descendant, Levi Trutt settled in Macon and Buncome Co, NC. Elizabeth Truitt, Elizabeth Johnson's mother is believed to be a descendant of Levi Truitt. (E Johnson's death certificate of Cheney WA 27 May 1906)
    Jacob Thorp and his 9 sons (all the residents of Pekin,Ill) fought in Black Hawk War, 1832 - Sauk & Fox Indian Uprising. Jacob Thorp, Elizabeth Johnson's brother, was killed in the Civil War Dec 11, 1863, Kansas volunteer."
