Ancestry.com Notes on Tharp and Truitt families:
Elizabeth Tharp was just 19 years old when her parents died. Her brother, Jacob C. Tharp, just 23 named executor of his father's estate. Probate records show that the Judge asked for Liquidation of the estateto pay off existing debts. Jacob C. Tharp died in 1846. Israel Tharp, brother of Andrew, named Second Executor. Jacob and Elizabeth Tharp (brother and sister) went to the Public Auction, and bid on several items. Elizabeth bid on beds, table and cupboard and a mirror. Jacob C. bid on hogs, grain, and farm items. A book, "The History of Greek Civilization," was listed amongst the items for sale. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It seemed that a large contingent of Truitt family, and also Quakers, moved into the Fleming County, KY area, having been persecuted in North Carolina, after their move from Delaware. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Joyce Johnson Spaulding Jan 2003 Recently, I received information from a distant cousin, Jim Tharp, of Vashion, Washington. He is in posession of his Great-Grandfather's 150 year old Journal. I hed put an enquiry looking for siblings of my Gr-Grandmother, Elizabeth Tharp Johnson in the Ancestry.com Message board. After two years of waiting, we got a hit, and have put many pieces of the Tharp puzzle together. He was Elizabeth's youngest brother, Jonathon Brady Tharp. After Andrew and Elizabeth (Truitt) Tharp both died of an unknown disease in Pekin, IL, in the winter of 1844-1845 (possibly Cholera or Typhoid), 8 children were left orphaned. The 1840 US Census lists only 7, but we think the eldest daughter was married. I will enumerate all 8 of these children, and as much information from J. Brady's Journal as he listed. The eldest son, Jacob Collins Tharp was appointed executor of Andrew and Elizabeth's (Betsy's) estate. He left sad notes, and in 1846, he died at age 23. The Judge ordered an auction of Andrew's property to pay all bills, including medical and burial against the estate. After the auction, the family, left with nothing, almost all left to join the great westward tide to Oregon, or California. We have learned that at least 4 of Andrew's children and mates, and at least 1 grandchild, joined the CAMBELL-Wigle train which left Peoria, Illinois about 1851-1852 to make the Oregon Trail trek to the west. 1321
