Notes: In the second group of saints traveling to the Salt Lake Valley was Mary Squires, a young girl from England. She became George’s wife. George often told the story about meeting his wife on this trek across the plains. One day the oxen and thhe covered wagon in which Mary and another girl were riding became stuck in the middle of a stream that they were crossing. George, already in love with Mary, carried her to safety on the shore of the stream. He also went back and got the oxenen, but he left the other girl in the wagon all night. My, how she cried!Only a few details about Mary Squires’ childhood are known. She was born 5 March 1852 at Front Street, Radford, Nottingham, England. She was the youngest of five childreren in the family of Joseph Squires and Mary Davis Squires. Her father was a framework knitter by trade. Joseph and Mary Squires joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about 1850. Mary was baptized at the age of eight years, oon 17 June 1860 at Radford, ten years after her parents joined the church. Mary had two very close girlfriends, also members of the church: Ellen Widdison, who later married her brother, Joseph Squires, and Ann Winterton. Mary, Ellen annd Ann often sang together and went to other nearby English towns with their caroling. The three girls left England together and came to Utah.During the summer of 1868, before George and Mary were married, George worked on the Henry Chipman farrm at American Fork, Utah, and Mary helped in the Chipman home. George Oler, at age 19, and Mary Squires, at age 16, were married by George Q. Cannon in the Salt Lake Endowment House on 11 October 1868, not long after they met on the plains. IIt must have been one of the happiest days of Mary’s life, for on that same day, her father and mother also received their endowments, and her friend, Ellen Widdison, became the wife of her brother, Joseph Squires. Mary must have had a deep love and respect for her three brothers, George, Joseph and James, because she named three of her sons after them.
