1906 HISTORY: NMEX,Quay-Tucumcari: "Descendants of John and Abigail Thurlo, by Emmett & Odrie Thurlo: "Mary Belle md James Atkins and they continued to live in and around Browning until about 1906 when the family moved to Quay Co,New Mexico and filed on some homestead land there. In all probability, they had heard of the land available from Columbus Thurlo who duing that period of time was "roaming around the Western States." Belle's uncle, David Marion, was also in Quay Co at that time and may have written about it.
James and Belle established a cattle ranch near Tucumcari and raised their family to be cowpunchers. Belle was a great horsewoman and could perform the ranch duties as well as any man. Like other ladies of the times, she rode sidesaddle or astride her horse, depending upon the circumstance."
