1923 BIRTH: MO,Sullivan Co: Eugene Alson Thurlo was born 19 January 1923

1941-45 MILITARY: Tombstone, Hoover Cem, Sullivan Co, MO: S Sgt Medical Dept, WW II.
Descendants of John and Abigail Thurlo pg 3-3: "...He served 3 years in the Army during WWII..."

1946 MARRIAGE: MO,Sullivan Co: Eugene Alson Thurlo md Patricia Gooch 26 May 1946, 4 children: Richard Wayne, Jane Alson, Judith Ann (twin to Jane) and Cornelia Diane

HIST: Descendants... pg 3-3: "...graduated from Browning High School, attended Kirksville State Teachers College, and graduated from Missouri University at Columbia... worked for the Extension Service as County Agent in Bethany and Unionville MO prior to returning to the farm in the 1950s. His father, Richard, gave him 40 acres and he built a house across the road from the original house built by Alson Norton. Eudene owned an interest in the stock and helped in management of the farm. He also had off the farm employment; first as a Veterans Administration teacher at Milan, then as Linn Co Extension Agent until his sudden death on November 10, 1961.
1872-1972 Browning MO Centennial Celebration pg 143: "...Their son, Eugene married Patricia who was and is teaching in Browning. Eugene passed away of a heart attack as a young man. Four children were born to them. Ricky..., Jane..., Judy, a twin sister of Jane..., and Diane...
cont'd: Eugene Alson Thurlo 1923 - 1961. Above his desk Gene Thurlo displayed a large photograph of his grandfather at the halter of a Missouri mule. The picture served as an ironic contrast to the agricultural innovations and methods he discussed with farmers during 4 years as Linn County's extension agent. Beyond this, however, the juxtaposition of the man and the animal must have had a personal significance for Thurlo. Something about this mule and its qualities seems analogous to the combination of pluck and perversity that brought Thurlo's family to Sullivan Co, MO in 1836 and has kept it there ever since... a young extension agent in Harrison and Putnam Counties... His was a family deeply rooted in the soil it knew as home... excited of the timber where he found Indian relics as a boy... His interest in young people, shown in his work with 4-H Clubs and students and in his rold as a Sunday School teacher, reflected his concern for the future of the community and provided him with an optimist outlook for that future... witnessed as young people the Depression and the exodus from the farms, the development and use of the atomic bomb and war, the beginning of rapid advances in technology, and other profound changes in the quality and pace of American life. The transition has been a difficult one, and the present has been filled with anxiety for these people. Gene Thurlo, who attempted to bring values from the past into bearing upon knowledge and skills of the future... inner tension which caused him to smoke 3 packs of unfiltered Camels a day and die of a heart attack in 1961 at the age of 38..."
