David 's father was a weaver and David followed that occupation, although he was determined to become something better. He saved to pay his tuition at a night school and devoted his evenings to improving himself and learning. In 1857 he joined the Mormon Church and five years later crossed the ocean and emigrated to the Valley. He married Sarah in England and together they made the journey with their young daughter. They made their home in Provo where he helped anyone who needed help.
In 1876 the family moved to Benjamin where David opened a mercantile store. After the death of his wife, he eventually went to Long Beach, California, where he died.
