    1878-Richmond took older boys to harvest in Willamette Valley. Were there when younger 5 dd Oct 1878 of diptheria. Maryann buried all 5 below farm above Salmon River [Burton Fam Cem]. They were 1st white settlers on Salmon River. Moved to Tillamook County line 1875 when Siletz Reservation boundaries changed-had squatters rights to 160 acres on Cascade Head, Crowly Creek.
    1st child bn Polk Co Mar 1861. Burton family owned cemetery, maintained by Hattie before she moved to Aloha, OR 1990. Now owned & maintained by Ross & Nan Hall-no relation."

    1876-1883 HIST: May 1955 letter from Hattie Church Gnos, oldest grandaughter of John May Burton, of Otis OR, to Mary Gray Marks, Eads doc #19: "According to our records, the Burton family came to Salmon River between 1876 and 1878. Records show one child born at Polk Co in March 1876 and 5 deaths (of Diptheria) here in October 1878. These 5 children are all buried in the family cemetery here. My greatgrandmother had two more children born after that, one in 1879 and one in 1883... Burtons were one of the 1st 3 white families to settle along the Salmon River Area.
    I believe the story goes this way: Greatgrandmother was home alone on the place with the five younger children while her husband and the older ones were away in the valley [Willamette Valley]. The three older boys would have been 17,15 & 13 according to the records I have. The children at home got diptheria and all died..."

Mildred is historian from Lincoln City museum [she had interviewed Hattie, had tapes of her mother, Olive Church & Stephen Beckham]. Story in "Pioneer Hist" Vol I, No. Lincoln Co Dec 1886.
    Cem located above North 3 Rox Rd off Pac Hwy, turn right on No Alder Pk Rd, right on Knoll Crest Rd (Ross & Nan Hall own & maintain cem). No markers left except one for 1944 - no name.
