Jan Pieterse was a ship carpenter and was active in the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Church.

The ancestor of the Staats family was Jan Pieters, who emigrated from Huysen, Holland before 1640 and settled at Gowanus in Breukelen, Long Island, N.Y.. His first wife Elsje died, and he married secondly May 16 1652 Grietje Jans, and thirdly 15 Nov 1663 the widow of Frederick Jansen. He was still living there in 1698. (info. found in "Houses of Somerset, New Jersey.") The oldest child Pieter is given an Abt Birth date in ( 4)
