He first saw the light in the Keystone state (PA), Columbia Co on Feb 8, 1854, where his father, Andrew Michael, was an operator of canal boats on two of the principal canals of the state. He remained with his father until 1877, acquiring a good education and such a practical training as afterward made him the successful man that he has been.
In 1880 he came to Mitchell Co KS, bought a farm of 160 acres, where he lived for 2 yrs, then selling out went to Norton Co, the same state, & took up a homestead, staying upon it for 2 yrs. During that time he was occupied with contract work on the grade of B & M RR in Nebraska, & later was superintendant of construction on the UP in KS. We were partners for several years as near as I can recollect from 1874 to 1880 in blacksmith business in Oregon. The above facts are of my own knowledge. I also know of his enlistment in 3rd Batt of NJ Lt Artillery-& once during his service he came home on furlough to visit me.
