    Notes:

King of Great Britain commissioned commissioners to establish what would become the final border between New York and New Jersey in 1769 and approved the boarder in 1773. Until this period the town of Minisink was in New Jersey, afterwards in New York.

Some of the Schuylers settled in Saddle River Township which was created in March 1716 making it one of the oldest townships in Bergen County. In 1772 a royal decree split Saddle River Township forming Franklin Township from the northern most half. Pompton Township was established in 1797 from both Franklin and Saddle Townships. Saddle River Township changed names in 1955 to Saddle Brook Township.

The Family of Philip Schuyler Son of Arent.

When Arent Schuyler removed from Pompton to New Barbadoes his son Philip remained on the farm at Pompton and is the immediate forefather of the branches of the family that settled in this vicinity. He was born at Albany and baptized there Sep 11, 1687 and died at Pompton about 1760. He and his children must have had a large __________ estate. He married about 1712 Hesther Kingsland, daughter of Isaac Kingsland of New Barbadoes who was a member of the Council under several of the deputy Governors of New Jersey. They had 12 children.

Philip Schuyler, a son of Arent, we are to presume, had patriotic impulses towards self-government long before the tea was thrown overboard at Boston or Patrick Henry made his famous speech, for we are told that Philip was expelled from the New Jersey Assembly in colonial days for drinking a health "to the damnation of the government and justices of the peace." He was subsequently restored to his seat.

    Arent Schuyler

    by

    Stefan Bielinski

Arent Schuyler was born in June 1662. He was a middle child in the very large family of New Netherland pioneers Philip Pieterse and Margarita Van Slichtenhorst Schuyler. His prominent and wealthy father died just before Arent reached his twenty-first birthday.

Arent Schuyler married three times. In November 1684, he wed Jannetje Teller (daughter of Willlem Teller) at the Albany Dutch church. By 1700, six children were christened in Albany and New York. But the marriage ended with Jannetie's death following the birth of her last child. In December 1702, he married Swantje Van Duyckhuysen of New Jersey. She died after bearing five children. In 1724, he was in his sixties when he wed Maria Walters. He appears to have fathered twelve children within the first two marriages.

In March 1685, he filed a joint will with his then new wife, Jannetie Teller. It stated that children were expected and mentioned real and personal property. The survivor would become executor.

At that time, he was known in Albany as an Indian trader. In 1687, he was elected alderman for the third ward. In 1689, he was listed among the householders living in the second ward in Albany. He is said to have participated in military actions against the French in Canada during the 1690s.

By 1695, he had removed to New York City, was known as a merchant, and became a freeman of the city.

About 1707, he was named by his widowed mother to share equally in his parents' estate.

Following the death of his first wife, he re-married and moved to Pompton Plains, New Jersey. He maintained his house on Broadway in New York. In 1710, he acquired a large farm at New Barbadoes Neck, New Jersey. His family became wealthy when they started to mine the copper deposits on their land.

Arent Schuyler died at home in New Barbadoes in November 1730. The father of eleven and the patriarch of the New Jersey branch of the Schuyler family, he had lived almost sixty-eight years.

    Biographical Note:

These papers originate from the Arent Schuyler line of the Schuyler family. Arent Schuyler was born in Rensselaerswyck (Albany), New York on June 25, 1662 and died in Belleville, New Jersey on November 26, 1730. Although he was a merchant by trade, Schuyler participated in the military actions against the French and American Indians in Canada in the 1690s. He moved from New York to Pompton Plains, New Jersey, where he lived until 1710 when he bought a large farm in New Barbadoes Neck, New Jersey. His land had a significant deposit of copper, and the family became wealthy as they started to mine the metal. Arent Schuyler married three times: to Jenneke Teller, to Swantje Van Duyckhuysen, and to Maria Walter(s), the daughter of Robert Walter(s) and Catharine Leisler. He had eleven children, among them were Adonijah, John, and Peter.

    Misc:
They located themselves, according to Mr. Schenck's statement, near to each other, on the east side of the river, just below the steel-works; Brockholst on the spot where Major William Colfax now resides (1871) and Schuyler, as near as can be ascertained, on the site of the residence of Dr. William Colfax. They were thus, in all probability, the pioneers in the settlement of this region, and the first to open up what was then a wilderness, "unless the tradition that Joost Beam settled at Wynockie as early as 1660 is true." How long he remained here is not known.

    Died:
His will is dated December 17, 1724, with codicil October 30, 1730; proven February 27, 1730(1?)

    Jannetje Teller Schuyler

    by

    Stefan Bielinski

Jannetje Teller probably was born before 1664. She was the daughter of New Netherland pioneers Willem Teller and Margaret Donchesen Teller.

In November 1684, she married Arent Schuyler at the Albany Dutch church. By 1700, six children had been christened in Albany and New York. In March 1685, they filed a joint will. Jannetje was named heir and executor of their estate.

These Schuylers initially made their home in Albany's second ward. But by the mid-1690s, they had re-located to New York.

Jannetje Teller Schuyler probably died shortly after the birth of her last child in 1700. Arent Schuyler re-married at the end of 1702.

    Notes:

The Kingsland Line In an earlier article I wrote about Nathaniel Board of Boardville (Ringwood) who married Mary Kingsland on Nov. 20, 1799. The Kingsland line begins with the Viscount Kingsland of England who had at least two sons: Robert and Nathaniel. Robert Kingsland was born in 1622 in England, married in England, and had at least two sons: Isaac Kingsland and Gustavus Kingsland. Robert removed to the colonies and settled at New Barbados Neck, Bergen County, N.J. Robert died there in 1647.

Isaac Kingsland was born in 1648 and married Elizabeth Berry in 1679 in Monmouth County. Isaac inherited a large tract of land in Barbadoes, West Indies from his uncle, Major Nathaniel Kingsland. Isaac and Elizabeth had at least seven children including: Edmund Kingsland who married Mary Pinhorne, daughter of William Pinhorne and Mary Ingoldsby; John Kingsland; Mary Kingsland; Hester Kingsland who married Philipus Arentse Schuyler, son of Arent Schuyler and Janneke Teller; Elizabeth Kingsland; Francis Kingsland; and Isaac Kingsland.

Colonel Edmund Kingsland was born in 1670 at Barbados Neck, Bergen County. He was commissioner under the Bill of Credit Act in 1723. Edmund and Mary had at least four children including: William Kingsland who married Margretta Coerten, daughter of Hendrick Coerten and Elizabeth De Reimer; John Kingsland; Isaac Kingsland who married Elizabeth Dow and Johanna Schuyler, daughter of Philipus Arentse Schuyler and Hester Kingsland; and a daughter, Hester Kingsland.

Isaac Kingsland was born July 10, 1710 in Sanford Springs, Essex County. He married Johanna Schuyler on June 3, 1741 at Bergen. He was Sheriff of Bergen in 1764. Isaac and Johanna had at least five children including: Edmund Kingsland who married first Mary Wilkinson and second Ann Low; Philip Schuyler Kingsland; Mary Kingsland; Peter Kingsland; and Hester Kingsland.

Edmund Kingsland had six children by Mary Wilkinson and 11 children by Ann Low, his second wife. Edmund settled at Pompton Plains. Edmund and Ann had 11 children including: Edmund; Maria; Elizabeth; Abram; Peter; Johannah; Margaret; William; Janet; Johannah; and Mary who married Nathaniel Board of Boardville.

Nathaniel Board and Mary Kingsland were married on Nov. 20, 1799. Colonel Nathaniel Board, also known as the Honorable Nathaniel Board, and Mary Kingsland had at least eight children including: John Ford Board, Edmund Kingsland Board; Mary Ann Board; Peter Board; Eleanor "Lena" Board; Harriet Board; Sarah Jane Board; and David James Board. All of their children were born in Pompton Township in what was then the area known as Boardville.

The wives of these early settlers are of ancestral stock every bit as interesting as the ancestral lines of their husbands. From time to time I will focus on the maternal lines of the early settlers of olde Pompton Township as we follow in their footsteps.

    Ship's surgeon and early settler
Monday September 7, 2009, 12:32 AM By Richard Townsend, Columnist

The first of the Vanderbecks in New Netherlands to my knowledge was Paulus Vanderbeck born about 1624 in Bremen, Holland. He was a ship's surgeon for the Dutch West India Company prior to 1644. About 1657 he was a farmer and operated the Breukelen (Brooklyn) ferry service. He settled at Flatbush, Long Island and at Gowanus, Kings County before 1657. He married Marritgen Thomasdr Bayde, daughter of Thomas Badie and Aeltje Branconie. Marritgen married three times to Jacob Verdon in 1624, Adrian Willemszen Bennet, and on Oct. 9, 1644 to Paulus Vanderbeck. She had children by all three of her husbands. She outlived her third husband Paulus who died in 1680 by 16 years.

Paulus and Marritgen had several children including: Catharyn Van Der Beek who married Daniel Richaud; Coenradus Vanderbeck who married Elsje Jans Schaers; Aelje Vanderbeck who married Dirk J. Ammerman; Paulus Vanderbeck who married Sarah Shouten; Hester Vanderbeck who married Jeureaen Blanck; and Isaac Vanderbeck. Of these it is Paulus (1681-1766) who we follow into Pompton.

Paulus Vanderbeck and Sarah Shouten were married on June 13, 1677 and were members of the Reformed Church of Brooklyn. They had several children including: Paulus Van Derbeck who married Cathalyntie Ryerson, daughter of Marten Ryerson and Annetje Jorise Rapelje; a second Sara Van Debeck who died young; Maria Van Derbeck who married Cornelius Christiansen; Sara Van Derbeck who married Hendrick Pieterse; Lucas; Jannaken; and Jacob. Of these it is Paulus and Cathalyntie who we follow into Pompton.

Cathalyntie Ryerson was the widow of Samuel Berrie, one of the patentees of Pompton. She was a sister to Joris Ryerson, another patentee. Samuel, like Paulus, was from Flatbush, Long Island. Paulus Van Derbeck and Cathalyntie Ryerson were married on June 12, 1703, one year after the death of Samuel Berrie. The relationships formed in Flatbush and earlier carried over into the settlements within the Pompton Patent.

Paulus built his home on the Pompton Plains adjacent to the Martin Berry home near the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Route 23. The property extended to the Pequannock River on the east. When Cathalyntie was married to Samuel Berrie, they resided at the "Hill's place in Bloomingdale." Their son Martin built the Martin Berry house next to the Vanderbeck house. Martin was Cathalyntie's son by her first marriage. The Berry house is one of the finest examples of Dutch architecture remaining in the state.

Paulus and Cathalyntie had several children including: Catalyna who married Johannis Van Gelder; Maria who married Garret De Boog (Debow); Sarah; and Elizabeth who married David Van Gelder. As all of the children were girls, the Vanderbeck name was no longer carried on in this line. Elizabeth was born in 1711 at Pompton Plains. Maria was born in 1706 at Pompton Plains. Sarah died young. The first name, Paulus, was given to Paulus De Bow, and Paulus Berry in the next generation.

Garret De Boog and Maria Vanderbeck had several children including: Catalyna who married Simon Van Ness; Elizabeth who married Abraham Gould; Paulus De Bow who married Geesje Francisco (Cisco/Sisco); John De Bow who married Jannetje Van Ness; Maria; and Sarah who married Phillip Schuyler.

Of these, Paulus De Bow purchased the tract of land known as the De Bow Plantation in 1767. Later, the present homestead was built before 1840. Charles H. Detwiller Jr., architect for the state, said the house had some architectural characteristics similar to the original Governor's Mansion in Perth Amboy. Six generations of De Bows lived in the house until it was sold out of the family hands in 1924.
