Mary Ross Fortner 1837 - 1912 : Obituary ANOTHER OLD SETTLER IS GONE Mary Ross Fortner was born in Ohio, February 21, 1837 and died in her home on Plum Creek in Wilson County, Kansas, May 10, 1912 at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 18 days. Mary Ross was married to Richard Fortner in Vermillian County, Illinois in 1855 and moved to Wilson County in 1874. To this union were born 11 children. Three of them died in infancy. Seven of the living were at her bedside - three daughters and four sons - at the time of her death. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Matilda Shepler preceded her mother to her reward 6 years ago.The remaining children are Mrs. Lena Barnes of Hillsdale, OK, H. J. Fortner of Eureka Springs, AR, D. F., A. J. , and R. B. Fortner, and Mrs. Lucy Bell Wahlgemuth of Fredonia, and Mrs. Maude Means of Doby, OK. Mrs. Fortner united with the United Brethern Church at Greenridge School House in 1904 and lived allied in the faith of a true christian. She was a kind and patient mother and a good neighbor. There are 19 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends to mourn her loss. Funeral Services were held at her home at eleven o'clock May 12, 1912, conducted by Jesse Williams and interment made in Fredonia Cemetery. The boon this love has given, although her body slumbers here, her soul is safe in heaven. |
